It has been revealed in several UK newspapers today that former two-weight World champion Ricky Hatton is seriously considering retiring from the ring. Hatton apparently revealed his thoughts to friends whilst on a holiday in Tenerife. He was due to fly back home last night.
Hatton Promotions chief executive Gareth Williams said: “Having not spoken to Ricky about his plans this week, I cannot comment on these stories, except to say that Ricky will decide what is best for him in the cold light of day.
“As we have always said, Ricky returning or not will be his decision and his decision only.
“It will be made at the proper time and will be reported through the proper channels.”
UK tv network Sky Sports had already pencilled in a date for Hatton’s return, on June 25th, but although spending some time recently in the gym doing light training, it would appear that Hatton is on the verge of quitting.
Hatton has had a career he can be proud of, with possibly his crowning glory coming against Kostya Tszyu in front of thousands of fans in his Manchester backyard. Since then, losses to Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have seriously dented Hatton’s ambitions of succeeding at the very top level but having made enough money, and with his new Hatton Promotions outfit, Ricky Hatton has plenty to do in the future, with or without fighting again.
