Funeka to face fine and suspension

Funeka to face fine and suspension

According to reports, Ali Funeka 30-3-3 (25) has failed a drugs test after his recent loss to Joan Guzman for the IBF lightweight title ( for Funeka only ). The report first issued by the Las Vegas Review Journal  states that Funeka failed the test for Hydrochlorothiazide which is a diuretic which increases urine output to assist in weight reduction. This will mean a suspension and fine for the South African when the Nevada Athletic commission meets on Friday.
This drug test failure is a fitting end to a complete mess regarding the two bouts between Funeka and Guzman. The first fight was controversial due to the official decision of a draw with most neutral observers agreeing that Funeka deserved to take the decision.
After a rematch was quite rightly ordered, Joan Guzman weighed in at 144lbs, 9lbs over the lightweight limit of 135lbs! After an agreement between the two camps and a 25% purse fine for Guzman the bout took place and Guzman won a decision, although he could not win the belt due to him not making weight.
After all this controversy, it is unlikely anybody will put the effort in to secure a third match between the two.
