WBA junior-welterweight champion Amir Khan has appealed to the public from his gym in Los Angeles for people to help with the devastating flooding afflicting Pakistan and surrounding regions, resulting in the loss of over 1000 lives and millions more left homeless. The former Olympic gold medallist is of Pakistani heritage, and still has family living in the country, so is affected personally although his family so far remain safe.

“We’ve been quite lucky,” said Khan. “My family’s not been affected. My mother and sister are still in Pakistan. I called them and they said everything’s okay, but there is still a lot of rain and flooding around the area.”

“It’s such a shame when you see all the people who have died and been affected. It’s quite hard to see that.  Pakistan have been going through so much recently so its terrible to see another disaster happen, but its great to see when you’ve got people like the Disasters Emergency Committee showing their support alongside  lots of other charities. They’re all helping out and can hopefully provide clean water and food and clothes and shelter for these people. Its hard times for them and the only thing we can do is donate and help them.”

“I’m teaming up with Save The Children and also Oxfam GB, and will get back to the UK in the next few days and start raising money for the disaster. To help you can go to any bank and donate or go onto the DEC website and I’m sure there’s something you can do there.  £50 will help two families in Pakistan for a month. It will all make a huge difference, and the more you donate the more people will be saved. More people are dying at this very minute, so we have to help them.”

“I wont be visiting Pakistan myself as I am training in LA and have Ramadan coming up, but will keep in touch with my family out there and will be doing all I can over in England to raise the profile and help them.”
