Shocking news has just been revealed that Mikkel Kessler is pulling out of Showtime’s Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament due to an eye injury.

A press conference announcing Kessler’s withdrawal from the tournament took place today and on advice from doctors Kessler has stated problems with his vision for the last few months and has been advised not to train or spar until it has healed.

This provides yet another set back in a tournament that started off well but seems to be falling apart.

After Arthur Abraham knocked Jermain Taylor out cold, Taylor was forced to consider his involvement in the competition and subsequently pulled out giving an opportunity for Allan Green to make a name for himself as a new participant.

Now that Kessler has to pull out aswell citing injury one wonders what will now become of the tournament which seemed to ignite the boxing world when it was announced. It seemed a good idea at the time but perhaps it was naive to think that the tournament would go ahead without a hitch keeping all the fighters injury free has proved impossible and the constant changing of venues due to rescheduling has been a promoters nightmare.

When Carl Froch was set to travel over to Denmark to finish his preparation for his second stage fight with Mikkel Kessler he was delayed by  a volcanic cloud in the sky caused by the eruption in Iceland. The fight was almost called off and Froch later complained that his mind wasn’t right for the fight partly due to the fact that he thought the fight wasn’t going to go ahead.

Kessler defeated Froch in a gutsy effort and it seemed as though he had breathed life into his career again coming off the one sided loss to Andre Ward but now this set back could potential push the Dane in retirement which for a man who has taken his fair share of punishment in the ring may not be the worst thing that could happen.
