Morales remains the last man to beat the great Manny Pacquiao

Erik “El Terrible” Morales (49-6, 34 KOs) continues his comeback trail as he takes on Scotland’s Willie Limond (33-2, 8 KOs) for the vacant WBC Diamond jr welterweight title (whatever the hell that is) in Mexico City. The fight will take place inside the Plaza de Toros bull ring on September 11th.

In his heyday Morales would dispose of someone like Limond in a round or two but now after years of grueling fights and being out of the ring for several years who knows what Morales really has left. Is this a chance for Limond, who has always come up short when tested, to show his worth and defeat a true boxing legend.

Morales is still the last man to defeat the now pound for pound king of boxing (sorry Floyd) Manny Pacquiao and hopes that he may meet him for a fourth time. Golden Boy Promotions have apparently shown interest in a fight between him and lightweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez also.

Willie Limond’s last win was over a guy with a record of 3-54-3 if that doesn’t tell you something about him and this fight then nothing will. His two losses come at the hands of Alex Arthur and Amir Khan both were undefeated at the time and on the up Limond it seemed was just a stepping stone to bigger fights.

Morales was pound for pound one of the best fighters to walk the earth in the late nineties early 2000′s, someone with the skills and experience of Morales should dispose of Limond quickly who really should have no business being in the ring with someone of Morales’ caliber (sorry to be harsh but it’s true).

I wasn’t thrilled upon hearing of Morales and Barrera’s return to the sport. In their three fights with each other they tore each other to pieces and then came Manny Pacquiao who put the final nail in the coffin of the two great Mexican warriors even though Morales was able to win the first fight they had. They now both campaign at higher weights than earlier in their career, their bodies no longer able to be pushed to make featherweight and both a searching for that last payday which in all fairness, for all they have given the sport and the fans, they deserve but as an avid fan it’s hard to see fighters who you respect so highly get in the ring when they should be retired a prime example of that being Roy Jones Jr.

When your body isn’t responding like it used to it’s usually time to call it a day but as I type this I remember an interview where Erick Morales talked about coming from fighting for very little money to making millions and how it’s always hard to stop because you fought so long for this how can you give it up when now you are finally being paid what you should? It’s a battle some older fighters are used to dealing with and with a warrior like Morales only he will decide when enough is enough will Limond be able to show him he doesn’t belong anymore, I highly doubt it but it could happen.
