Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch (26-1, 20KO’s) has told his local radio station, BBC Nottingham, that his upcoming fight with Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25KO’s) will be for the vacant WBC title, following fellow Super-Six competitor Mikkel Kessler withdrawal from the tournament last week. Froch of course lost the title to Kessler in Denmark in April but will now get a chance to immediately regain it.
Froch, 33, told BBC Radio Nottingham: “This fight with Abraham will be for the WBC title… and will be a straight semi-final. It’s good news for me.”
“It was going to be Group Stage Three, almost a quarter-final, and then we go through to the semis and the final.”
Following Kessler’s announcement the tournament stakes have changed, and this fight will now be a straight semi-final to face the winner of Andre Ward-Andre Dirrell in what could potentially be a rematch for any of the four depending on both fights outcomes.
Froch said: “There’s me and Abraham left, and we’re fighting. Andre Ward versus Andre Dirrell is the other semi. So in the final, you’ll have a WBC-WBA unification fight. After the final, Kessler’s got a shot at the WBC.
“Kessler will be what they call the ‘marital’ WBC champion, which means that Abraham and I are fighting for my old title.
“It means I’ll be world champion assuming I do the job properly and Kessler would get a shot at challenging for his old belt back because he vacated it.
“So there’s an undisputed world title fight in the final, which will probably be at Madison Square Garden in New York.
“I’ve got to do the business in my next fight, or it’s curtains.”
Froch sounded focused and confident in his interview and insisted he wouldn’t take Kessler or any other fight in the tournament lightly. Whatever titles may be on the line Abraham-Froch should be a good fight and could even produce fireworks when the two big hitters come together inside the ring.
