Arce Or Parra... Win, Lose, Or Draw?

Jorge Arce fought Lorenzo Parra in a ten round fight that was declared a draw in Culiacan, Mexico. The scoring was not announced after the fight but the match was declared a draw to the crowd and tv audiences. The scores still haven’t been given but later the local boxing commission declared the fight a split decision victory for Arce instead. It has been stated that there was a scoring error on Parra’s card in the seventh round, in which he was deducted a point by the ref. Controversy remains however, because the Sinaloan Culiacan Boxing and Wrestling Commission have stated that the result will officially remain a draw afterall, for now. Gerardo Zazueta, the head commissioner, will call a hearing of the full committee to determine if there truly was an error on the cards and whether or not the result will stand or be changed in the local Mexican Arce’s, full name Jorge Armando Arce Armenta’s, favor.

Jorge “Travieso” Arce currently has a record of 55-6-2 with 42 KOs to his credit. This fight on Saturday with Parra was meant to be a WBO super bantamweight eliminator match, with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger to the crown. Now, with the scoring issues all muddled, the commission’s decision has a lot at stake. Questions remain about who would be the mandatory challenger to WBO champ Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. if the fight is declared a draw. If Arce is given the victory though, it’s highly likely that Lorenzo’s camp will appeal to the WBO and ask for a rematch. Confusion reigns! Lorenzo “Lencho” Parra is now 31-2-1 with 18 knockouts pending the fight decision, and isn’t likely to give this up without a fight. It’s what boxers do, afterall. Also, Vazquez Jr must first fight and beat Ivan Hernandez on October 16th to keep the crown that Arce and Parra want to snatch way.

In the undercard Omar Chavez remained undefeated (24-0-1) by knocking out Rodrigo Juarez in the fourth round of their second meeting. And Humberto Soto retained his WBC lightweight championship with a unanimous decision over the tough Fidel Monterrosa Munoz. There were several slips in the fight from a canvas problem and Munoz (24-2) gave Soto a rough go of it. The final scores were 109-118, 112-115, 112-115, but it was closer than it looks on paper. Munoz was also deducted a point by referee Laurentino Oropeza in the ninth round. The 30 year old “Crafty Little Fox” Soto improves to 53-7-2 with 32 knockouts. The former super featherweight champ has now made two successful defenses of his lightweight crown.
