On Saturday night, from the Centro de Convenciones de Tlalnepantla in Mexico City, Hugo Cazares (33-6-2, 23 KOs) earned another win with his 9th round TKO victory over the Peruvian Alberto Rossel (24-8, 11 KOs). He claimed his second knockout victory since taking a unanimous decision over Nobuo Nashiro in Japan back in May of this year to claim the WBA World super flyweight title.
From the opening round Cazares was clearly the bigger man and that along with his power was the difference in the fight. Rossel used his speed and good defense to avoid the aggressive Cazares but that brought upon his low punch output and punch connection rate throughout the fight. Early in the 4th round Cazares connected with a left hand that put Rossel on the canvas for the first time in the bout. Rossel had to get in close to engage and raise his chances of winning but whenever he did land the power behind his shots had no effect on Cazares. From the mid rounds to the end of the fight it seemed like it was just a matter of time for Cazares to land something big to end the bout.
In the 7th round Rossel, visibly tired, went down to one knee to catch his breath from the overwhelming consistent pressure Cazares was dishing out. Give credit to Rossel even though out gunned and simply outclassed he never gave up and stood strong throughout the bout. In the 9th round Rossel decided to give his last stand as he came out throwing big power shots but Cazares was game and he caught Rossel with a short uppercut that prompted the referee to stop the fight. Hugo Cazares looked good against a limited opponent in his 2nd defense since winning the WBA strap, let’s just hope that his next opponent can bring a little bit more to the table.
