Carl “The Cobra” Froch made his recapturing of the WBC super middleweight title look easy tonight against Arthur Abraham at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland.
He kept Abraham at distance all night long and despite being the busier fighter it was Abraham that was sucking air and tiring in the later stages of the fight not the Cobra.
Abraham could never mount any offense because Froch was snapping his head back with solid jabs and ripped some hard shots round to the body whenever he got the chance aswell keeping Abraham honest throughout. The occasional jab would connect for Abraham but more often than not Froch’s jab always got there first and Abraham was always coming up short and become increasing frustrated.
Every round was basically the same with Froch looking a million dollars (or pounds even) while he kept Abraham on the end of his punches forcing his opponent to swing crudely and recklessly in attempt at landing something.
The fact that Abraham pretty much always fights the same way has ultimately made him predictable and Froch followed the game plan set by his trainer Robert McCracken to perfection and was able to pick him apart. The conventional wisdom was that Abrahm would force Froch into a fight and that Froch being the kind of fighter he is would oblige him but it never happened.
In the twelve round Abraham, after having lost every round, came out and landed a big right hand on Froch which had “The Cobra” slightly shaken but at this stage Abraham had not done enough damage for Froch to wilt like Taylor did when it was Froch behind badly and needing the stoppage. Abraham shook Carl again before the final bell but as Froch has shown many a time he can certainly take a shot and raised his arms when the final bell rang knowing this time there was no way the judges could take it from him.
So Froch retains the title and will face Glen Johnson in the next round, Abraham meanwhile will have to go back to the drawing board and do some soul-searching also before he challenges Andre Ward next.
Abraham will have to look at his conditioning for this fight and ask himself why he seemed to be gassing towards the eighth round while Froch -who was the one doing all the punching – was the much fresher fighter going into the late rounds.
The body shots that Abraham absorbed could be a main factor as to why he seem to wilt and the fact that he couldn’t land anything significant obviously didn’t help. He looked discouraged and a beaten man after about six or so rounds but with all that said he kept trying for the win despite receiving alot of leather for his troubles which should be commended.
We’ll see how Andre Ward does tonight in his assignment against Sakio Bika later tonight but with this fight the Super Six was shaken up once again by a surprisingly one-sided domination by Froch over Abraham.
It failed to provide the kind of action that we hoped for but instead qualified as a masterclass in boxing by one fighter over another with this renewed confidence could Froch go on to win the Super Six?
My answer after tonight is why the hell not.
Hometown favourite Rober Helenius 14-0, 9 KOs) made short work of what was meant to be a reasonably tough assignment against Attila Levin (34-4, 27 KOs) knocking him out in two rounds much to the crowd’s enjoyment. In fact it turned out to be the only thing Sauerland could be excited about by the end of the night.
