Odlanier Solis in training camp for his eliminator with Ray Austin

2004 Olympic champion at heavyweight Odlanier Solis has been telling anybody who will listen, that he is ready to win a World title for quite some time now, but he should become mandatory contender after he takes on Ray Austin 28-4-4 (18) in a WBC heavyweight eliminator on December 17th.

If he wins the fight (which he should ) he will be mandatory contender to Vitali Klitschko. There is no doubt that Solis is talented but many people have voiced concerns about Solis’ weight.

Solis was training today at his Miami base where he has reunited with his former amateur coach Pedro Luis Diaz who also trains WBC light heavyweight  champion Jean Pascal.

Solis told the media; “This is my job and I take it very seriously. I am not a boxing fan. This is my work. I do not watch tapes on Ray Austin or Vitali Klitschko. I just focus on doing my job to the best of my abilities”.

“I want to knock Ray Austin out on December 17th and then take on Vitali Klitscko on March 17th. I am going to show new things I have learned during this training camp.”

“My weight is not a matter. I am in shape. Look at me. I’m not even breathing hard. I am comfortable at this weight. I am not even thinking about weight, just my conditioning”.

The 6ft 6inch Austin sees things differently. Austin (who I still believe is exceptionally lucky to be the number one contender) said “I dont see anything about Solis that impresses me. I have seen the guys he has fought and it looks like they came to lose.It is going to be different for him when he has got a man in front of him that is willing to do anything to win.”

However Solis’ joint promoter Ahmet Oner of Arena promotions is in no doubt who will be the winner. “I honestly believe that we are looking at the greatest heavyweight in the World right now and I’ve been with him for his entire professional career,” said the charismatic promoter.
