Gennady Golovkin 20-0 (17) today won the WBA middleweight title with a third round stoppage over the Columbian Nilson Julio Tapia 14-3-1 (10) in Golovkins home country of Kazakhstan.
Golovkin won the interim WBA title back in August with a one round knockout of Milton Nunez but todays fight was for the full title.
Although this is not earth shattering news, Golovkin could be one to watch. Tapia in his last fight shut out Jorge Heiland who I thought was unlucky not to get the decision against interim WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik earlier this year so was in good form but not good enough to dethrone Golovkin.
Golovkin punches hard and could be in exciting fights. Fellow former Eastern bloc fighter Dmitry Pirog was also a relatively unknown fighter but look what he did to Danny “Golden Child” Jacobs to win the WBO middleweight title back in July.
Unfortunately Golovkin is having legal troubles at the moment trying to get out of a contract with Universum box promotions. Universum have taken Golovkin to court and he is not allowed to sign elsewhere which is a shame because rumours had it that Top Rank promotions were hoping to sign him on.
He may not be a big name now but I think Golovkin could be a bit special.
