Despite only losing only two weeks ago in a European title challenge, England’s Derreck Chisora (15-2, 9KO’s) is to get a shot at WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40KO’s) in Munich on February 18, it was announced today.
Chisora was twice scheduled to face brother Wladimir only to be let down on both occasions by circumstance, so will be delighted to finally get his shot at the title, as undeserved as it may or may not be.
Klitschko, now 40 years old, says he plans to have at least two more fights next year, and wants the second to be against David Haye in July,
Although retired it’s widely believed that Team Haye is deep in negotiations with the Klitschko’s although as of yet nothing has been officially announced. After that the Ukrainian says he will make a decision about his future.
“I don’t want to break the age record of George Foreman, who boxed until he was 45,” Klitschko said.
Most people believe Chisora was unlucky to lose to Robert Helenius, who is out of action with a hand injury sustained during the fight, on a split-decision a fortnight ago in Finland.. Clearly Klitschko is one of them.
“For me, he won the European Championship against Robert Helenius quite clearly,” he said.
In truth the gulf in class and experience between Klitschko and Chisora is immense, and nobody truly expects Chisora to pull off the upset, but it is a chance not to be missed for the London fighter and should he indeed lose, at just 27, will have plenty of time to rebuild and come again.
