Brook (left) was in complete control of his bout with Galarza

In the chief supporting bout to Ward-Froch at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J the touted English welterweight Kell ‘Special K’ Brook (26-0, 18KO’s) made his long-awaited debut on American soil and looked good breaking down and stopping Luis Galarza (17-3, 13KO’s) in the fifth of their scheduled ten-rounder. Brook, ranked by all the governing bodies, hardly put a foot wrong, dominating his Tennessee-based Puerto Rican opponent from start to finish.

Brook’s manager Eddie Hearn has promised him a World title fight in the new year, and against Galarza looked more than ready to move on to bigger things. Showing fast hands, maturity and good ring awareness, Brook will have impressed all who watched with his controlled demolition job.

As the fight began it looked like Brook may have a long night on his hands, with Galarza letting his hands go and showing that he meant business, but it was far from cultured and Brook picked off and countered Galarza, landing the better blows with more power.

Book had Galarza in serious trouble in the second but instead of rushing in and getting caught, bided his time and patiently stalked Galarza, choosing his moments wisely. The gulf in class was obvious and it looked a matter of time until Galarza imploded.

Brook picked at Galarza slowly until his resistance had all but gone, and in the fourth landed a sickening right uppercut that knocked Galarza’s mouthpiece clean out on to the canvas as he rallied with the punches.

It was by that point a one-sided beating and despite one last big effort from Galarza to begin the fifth it wasn’t enough and Brook, stepping up a gear, starting putting spiteful power shots in and two right hands that sunk Galarza to his knee forced the referee to step in and save him from further punishment.

Nothing less was expected of Brook against an opponent of this level but it will be good experience for the young Sheffield fighter and almost certainly not the last time we see him plying his trade on US shores.
