Three Fights I Wish Had Been Made

In boxing, politics, money issues, a bigger fight or promotional issues often scupper potential big fights. I have delved into my memory bank and bring you 3 fights that I wish had been made. I have tried to avoid the absolutely obvious examples (Bowe- Lewis, etc) and bring up fights that I feel would have captured the boxing fans eye.

1/. Aaron Pryor-Roberto Duran (approx. 1980)

Roberto Duran is by common consensus a legendary fighter and one of the top 5 lightweights of all time. Duran (and also Shane Mosley many years later) was a long time lightweight world champion who skipped the light welterweight division to fight and beat the biggest name outside of the heavyweight division at welterweight...

The dream match in the early 1990's was that of one Big George Foreman v Iron Mike Tyson.

Big George had been making waves since his unlikely comeback in 1987, aged 38. The sudden retirement post the Jimmy Young loss and the hallucinations in the dressing room had convinced George to pack it in and become a preacher. Bradley, who lives with his parents Joanne, 40, and Glen, 50, who has trained Hide for the past nine months, has just served a short sentence at a Young Offender's Institute following the latest in a long line of offences for criminal damage, theft and anti-social behaviour. Since his release last month the youngster, who was visited by Hide...

The Irresistible Force vs The Immovable Object

There is a maxim as old as professional boxing itself. When a fighter is through, they’re the last to know when it’s time to go.

Of course he guessed it was after beating Walcott for the second time despite not looking his best and being dropped in the third. Soon after the fight he did the right thing and announced his retirement. Sadly, like so many fighting men, he needed to fight again for moneyand perhaps more than that- perhaps he needed to feel the things that drag so many back. The roar of the crowd, the hands slapping his back after he won, the nerves before the fight, the exultation after a win, the other-worldliness of being in the zone, fighting another...
