Cazares retains his title.

On Saturday night, from the Centro de Convenciones de Tlalnepantla in Mexico City, Hugo Cazares (33-6-2, 23 KOs) earned another win with his 9th round TKO victory over the Peruvian Alberto Rossel (24-8, 11 KOs). He claimed his second knockout victory since taking a unanimous decision over Nobuo Nashiro in Japan back in May of this year to claim the WBA World super flyweight title.

From the opening round Cazares was clearly the bigger man and that along with his power was the difference in the fight. Rossel used his speed and good defense to avoid the aggressive Cazares but that brought upon his low punch output and punch connection rate throughout the fight. Early in the 4th round Cazares connected with a left hand that put Rossel on the canvas for the first time in the bout. Rossel had to get in close to engage and raise his chances of winning but whenever he did land the power behind his shots had no effect on Cazares. From the mid rounds to the end of the fight it seemed like it was just a matter of time for Cazares to land something big to end the bout.

The Franchise Podcast – Week 9-13-2010

This is the first installment in a highlight podcast that you can only find here at Fight Franchise. Feedback is welcomed!

This text will be replaced

I will be posting them once a week showing some highlights of several fights occurring the weekend before. I wanted to post it up to see how you guys react to it.

An intro and other various things are still in the works but you’ll get a sense of what will be in these podcast in the weeks to come. I’m shooting at making them no more than 30 mins. long but since I wanted to test the waters this first installment is only 11 mins.

This installment features highlights from:

Fury and O’Donnell win on Shobox

On Friday night from York Hall in London, England, prospect John O’Donnell (23-1, 11 KO’s) took on veteran Terrance Cauthen (35-6-2, 9 KO’s) in a 12 round welterweight bout in front of a very enthusiastic crowd. The ShoBox telecast kicked things off with the co-main event featuring heavyweight Tyson Fury (11-0, 9 KO’s) taking on late replacement Rich Power (12-0, 9 KO’s) in a 8 round affair.

Fury did what was expected of him as he easily dominated the Michigan native with a unanimous decision win but not with plenty of action along the way. The very game Powers didn’t just lay down for the heavyweight prospect, he gave it his all landing some very nice shots like a picture perfect uppercut that tossed Fury’s mouthpiece to the ground in the 6th round. But the towering heavyweight only got angrier as he landed almost at will on the shorter and much lighter Power’s.

Wladimir Klitschko vs Sam Peter II

On September 11 from the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt, Germany Wladimir Klitschko (54-2, 48 KOs) will defend his IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight championship belts against the power punching Samuel Peter (34-3, 27 KOs) in a 12 round fight. If you thought HBO would broadcast the fight for the American audience think again you will have to sit in front of your laptop and watch it on ESPN3 live or simply wait till the following day to catch in on their main channel. Props to ESPN for picking up this important heavyweight bout for the American boxing fans.

Matthysse destroys Castañeda, Lujan TKOs Julio

From the Estadio Cubierto Newell Old Boys in Rosario, Argentina, Golden Boy Promotions put on a night of boxing featuring Lucas Matthysse (26-0-1, 24 KOs) of Argentina taking on against veteran Rogelio Castañeda (26-15-3, 8 KOs) from Tijuana, Mexico. In a rematch from their bout on September 12, 2008 that ended in a draw due to a headbutt, Matthysse was looking to avenge the only blemish in his perfect record. The hometown favorite wasted no time as he knocked down Castañeda to the canvas with a left hand mid way through the 1st round. Visibly hurt, Castañeda was not able to recover as Matthysse increased the pressure and went on to put his over matched opponent a total of 3 times on the canvas. Castañeda started out with the right idea of moving a round and throwing the jab but Matthysse was just too strong and as soon as he connected the fight was basically over. Lucas Matthysse improved to 27-0-1, 25 KOs while Rogelio Castañeda dropped to 26-16-3, 8 KOs, now a raise in quality opposition is needed to see if Matthysse is for real or not.

Rios and Orozco stay unbeaten

From the Club Nokia in Los Angeles, California featherweight Ronny Rios (11-0, 5 KOs) stopped Leivi Brea (17-8-3, 9 KOs) with consistent body attack at the end of 4th round. The 6 round bout started off with both fighters trying to establish themselves early and by the 2nd round Rios was having success as the aggressor, even if he did get a point deduction for a low blow late in the round. In the 3rd round Rios came out determined to reclaim the deducted point as stepped up his attack to the head and body. Displaying his good schooling Rios used his defense, jab and combinations to eventually wear down Brea to the body in route to 4th round KO. The promising featherweight prospect Ronny Rios improved to 12-0, 6 KOs while Leivi Brea dropped to 17-9-3, 9 KOs.

Random Thoughts 1

Noons calls out Mayweather Jr.

On Saturday night, after watching Joksan Hernandez blow out Ira Terry, my boxing night was over but as a Showtime subscriber my wife and I decided to watch the Strikeforce card airing that same night. Even though I’m a huge boxing fan, I have tremendous respect for anyone that makes a living by stepping into any type of ring to engage in professional combat. After watching the 2 hour long event what stood out for me was the performance and comments of KJ Noons.

Gesta KO’s Trazancos, Lopez upsets Landeros

Friday night from the Casino Del Sol in Tuczon, Arizona, Jr. Welterweight prospect Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (18-0-1, 8 KOs) of San Diego faced Genaro Trazancos (22-11-1, 13 KOs) in Solo Boxeo’s 8 round main event.

Earlier in the week this card suffered a major change as headlining Michael Franco (16-0, 11 KOs) from Riverside, Ca., was told that he had a small retina tear in his pre-weight eye exam. Franco was to face veteran Adolfo Landeros in an  8 round fight but Landeros ended up fighting late replacement Noe Lopez in the co-main event.

Arreola Fails to Impress, Lopez Takes UD

On Friday August 13th from the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (28-2, 25 KOs) dominated Manuel “El Toro” Quezada (29-5, 18 KOs) over 12 rounds of boxing. In a mostly unentertaining fight Arreola, with a 28 lbs advantage,  was just too much for the smaller Quezada in every aspect of the fight. Arreola used his superior work rate against the, at times, uninterested Quezada to dictate the pace of the fight. The first 8 rounds were uneventful and at times just plain boring, mimicking a casual sparring session between stablemates. The ninth round saw Quezada go down from a left uppercut, then moments later, go down again from what seemed to be an accumulation of punches. Everyone expected Arreola to come out in the tenth and finish the hurt Quezada but El Toro dug deep and out landed Arreola by 38 punches to put forth his best effort of the fight. With momentum on his side Quezada was finally putting in some intent behind his punches as Arreola looked to be tiring and possibly be falling into trouble. But in the final round Arreola finished strong as he outworked and dropped an exhausted Quezada to try and erase any memory of his early performance in the fight. Chris Arreola took the Unanimous Decision with the scores of 117-108, 118-107 and 118-107 to improve to 29-2, 25 KOs while Manuel Quezada fell to 29-6, 18 KOs.

Chris Arreola takes on Manuel Quezada

On Friday August 13th from the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (28-2, 25 KOs) will take on Manuel “El Toro” Quezada (29-5, 18 KOs) in this weeks “Friday Night Fights” main event. Both Latino Heavyweights are looking to get back on the winning track as they both under performed in they’re last outing coming away with decision losses.

Arreola was last seen square up against Cruiserweight turned Heavyweight Tomasz Adamek in a very entertaining back and forth fight from the same arena ESPN will be broadcasting on Friday night. On paper the bout looked even with an edge leaning towards the stronger Arreola, but due to his lack of weight discipline and a broken right hand the more mobile and counter punching Adamek earned a Majority Decision. That result tallied up Arreola’s record over the last three fights to just 1 – 2, after starting his promising career with an impressive record of 27-0 with 24 KOs. In order to avoid becoming a Heavyweight doormat for future Heavyweight contenders Arreola has to get serious about his career starting with an impressive win against “El Toro” Quezada.

Escalante stops Ruiz in 3.

On Friday night from the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas, hometown favorite Antonio “Tono” Escalante (22-2, 14 KOs) squared up against rugged veteran Edel “Cuate” Ruiz (31-22-5, 20 KOs) from Los Mochis, Mexico in a 10 round bout. The 25 yr. old Escalante has a fan friendly style and has power on both hands all while making it too easy for his opponents to hit him. Escalante has been on a 9 bout winning streak including KO wins over top rated opponents Mike Oliver and Gary Stark Jr. before he was upset by former world champ Mauricio Pastrana. Ruiz is a tough fighter who has been in the ring with several former and current world champs and most recently knocked out heavy favorite Clarence Adams in 4 rounds in his last outing.

Devon Alexander defends against Andriy Kotelnik

On Saturday August 7th Don King Productions will present the potentially explosive card “Gateway to Greatness” from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Where Hometown hero Devon Alexander “The Great” (20-0, 13 KOs) will defend his title against former super lightweight champion Andriy “Kotelya” Kotelnik (31-3-1, 13 KOs), from Lviv, Ukraine, In the Co-main event IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud (20-0, 18 KOs), from Tallahassee, Fla., will face 2004 Fighter of the Year Glen “Road Warrior” Johnson (50-13-2, 34 KOs) form Clarendon, Jamaica. Also on the un-televised portion of the card St. Louis King Cory “Next Generation” Spinks (37-5, 11 KOs) defends his light middleweight title against former “Contender” Cornelius “K9″ Bundrage (29-4, 17 KOs) in a 12 round fight.

“The Rematch” Undercard Wrap-up

Before Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz engaged in “The Rematch” the co main event featured a fight between undefeated “Golden Child” Daniel Jacobs (20-0, 17 KOs) against Russian prospect Dmitry Pirog (16-0, 13 KOs). The fight started off with Jacobs trying to catch Pirog with a big right hand but it missed the very relaxed Pirog who set the tone of fight by backing up the Brooklyn native throughout the fight. Jacobs looked uncomfortable all night as Pirog’s movement didn’t allow him to land anything big and sometimes nothing at all. Pirog on the other hand threw and landed less punches but it seemed that every time he connected it noticeably affected the confused Jacobs. By the time the fifth round came along a pattern was visibly established as Pirog’s relaxed attack on a back pedaling Jacobs set up an interesting “right – left – right pivot foot stance change” that ended with a crushing right hand to Jacobs chin. Pirog’s statute like pose with his hands raised in the direction Jacobs woke up looking at, stunned the fans in attendance but the way the fight was unfolding it’s hard to imagine ending any other way.

The Rematch: Juan Manuel Marquez vs Juan Diaz II

On July 31st from the Mandalay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez (50 – 5 – 1 37 KO’s) will face Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz (35 – 3 17 KO’s) in a rematch of their classic fight from 2009. Marquez vs. Diaz II “Fight of the Year: The Rematch” is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Marquez Boxing Promotions which features a rarely seen stacked undercard with fights like: Daniel Jacobs vs Dimitry Pirog, Robert Guerrero vs Joel Casamayor and Jorge Linares vs Rocky Juarez.

After their first encounter both Marquez and Diaz have had a not so stellar run as both fighters are coming off loses. They both desperately need a win to stay relevant at the elite level and a devastating loss may convince them to hang them up. It’s that do or die storyline that makes this match up a must watch for any boxing fan.
