Bute vs Magee set for March 19th

Lucian Bute (27-0, 22 KOs)will defend his IBF super middleweight title against Brain Magee (34-3-1, 24 KOs)at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada,  it was announced today.

The bout will take place on March 19th as Bute plans on staying active whilst sizing up his options for bigger money fights down the line.

Magee, 35, is ranked number eight by the IBF and took the fight after Dimitri Sartison rejected an offer by Interbox.

Bute had a releatively easy nights work in his last outing against the gutsy but limited Jesse Brinkley stopping him in nine rounds in a very one sided action.

Magee hasn”t lost since 2006 and has been described by Interbox as the best super middleweight available. Whether he will be able to cause Bute any problems is probably unlikely but with the best fighters in the division tied up in Showtime”s Super Six tournament there really isn”t that many options out there for the Romanian fighter.

Hopkins gets a draw with Pascal

Bhop had Pascal wobbled a few times by some good right hands

Bhop had Pascal wobbled a few times by some good right hands

Jean Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KOs), retained his WBC light heavyweight title last night in front of his hometown fans as he escaped a loss just barely with a majority draw against America’s Bernard Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KOs).

Not many people seemed to know or care that this fight was happening but as it turned out it was pretty entertaining action. The last time I stayed up till the wee hours (I’m on GMT time) to watch a Bernard fight it was his brilliant dismantling of then undefeated middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik. I didn’t expect Bernard to look half as good as he did in that fight but I was surprised with what I did see.

Will Hopkins defy fathertime once again by beating Pascal?

Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KOs) will attempt to defy father time once again tomorrow night as he challenges Jean Pascal (26-1, 16 KOs) for his WBC/IBO light heavyweight titles.

Hopkins became the IBO light heavyweight champion in 2006 when he defeated Antonio Tarver by unanimous decision. The fight was lopsided and was one of the best of Hopkins’ career – a career that spans over two decades and more than 20 title defenses.

Hopkins ability to not only just compete but in some instances dominate current champions and world-class opposition is staggering and just when you count him out he proves you wrong, it’s what he does best. Hopkins has said before that without the naysayers he wouldn’t be where he was today, that and extreme hard work and dedication to his craft has made Hopkins one of the greatest fighters of his generation.

Khan holds onto his title just about

Amir Khan held onto his WBA jr welterweight title by unanimous decision against Marcos Maidana tonight at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas but it wasn’t the way he planned it.

Khan was hurt badly in the tenth but somehow managed to hold on despite being out on his feet. Had Maidana of won some of the early rounds he may have had a case for a victory but Khan escaped his clutches.

Early on Khan was totally dominate and he put Maidana down in the first round with a vicious combination to the body which buckled Maidana and it looked as though Khan may be on his way to an early stoppage. However Maidana managed to carry on and towards the later stages of the fight Khan stopped moving as much and Maidana had chances with Khan’s back against the ropes and other times on the inside he was able to land uppercuts and cupping shots round the head of Khan.

The puncher vs the boxer: a match made in boxing heaven

Tonight Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KOs) will defend his WBA jr welterweight title as he takes on the hard punching Argentine Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KOs) at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas.

The classic match up of the brawler vs the boxer has yielded fine results in the past – just off the top of my head I can think of a few great ones like Chavez vs Taylor, Robinson vs Lamotta, Chuvalo vs Patterson and more recently Soto vs Antillon.

Tyson Fury to fight Israel Carlos Garcia on Hopkins-Pascal undercard

Fury (right) looked soft for his last fight will he come into this fight in better shape?

Fury (right) looked soft for his last fight will he come into this fight in better shape?

British heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury (12-0, 9 KOs) will fight on the Jean Pascal- Bernard Hopkins undercard against Israel Carlos Garcia (20-3, 11 KOs) on December 18th.

The fight will take place at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec, Canada and will be Fury first fight under new trainer Emmanuel Stewart who trains current WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko among others.

Stewart recently became Miguel Cotto’s trainer after his loss to Manny Pacquiao who has since won himself a WBA jr middleweight title under Stewart’s guidance. Can Stewart raise Fury’s game to where it needs to be for him to be a top contender in the division is the question.

Froch dominates Abraham through 12 rounds

Carl “The Cobra” Froch made his recapturing of the WBC super middleweight title look easy tonight against Arthur Abraham at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland.

He kept Abraham at distance all night long and despite being the busier fighter it was Abraham that was sucking air and tiring in the later stages of the fight not the Cobra.

Abraham could never mount any offense because Froch was snapping his head back with solid jabs and ripped some hard shots round to the body whenever he got the chance aswell keeping Abraham honest throughout. The occasional jab would connect for Abraham but more often than not Froch’s jab always got there first and Abraham was always coming up short and become increasing frustrated.

Froch vs Abraham: Let’s get ready to rumble

It’s all on the line this weekend in the Super Six as Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KOs) gets set for the biggest fight of his life against hard punching Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KOs) at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland.

It was meant to be held in England (according to Carl Froch) then it was announced as being a neutral venue in Monaco but after Froch suffered a back injury the fight was postponed and now here we are.

Froch suffered the first loss of his career back in April to Mikkel Kessler – who has since been withdrawn from the tournament due to recurring problems with his eyes. Froch feels like he did enough to win yet by his own admission let the fight slip away from him so he will be coming into this fight knowing that can’t happen this time around.

Mayweather Jr’s troubles with the law continue

Floyd Mayweather Jr has apparently been involved in yet another incident involving the same person who was a victim of the shooting linked to Mayweather at a skating rink in August last year.

Quincey Williams, 26, a former employee of Floyd has accused his former boss of trying to run him off the road in a white Bentley while he drove near Spring Mountain.

“He (Mayweather) feels like he’s entitled to do whatever he wants and get away with it. He wants to walk around and intimidate people like he’s some type of thug,” said Williams.

The police report was filled on Monday, Mayweather’s attorney Karen Winckler has refused to comment.

Meanwhile, Mayweather awaits a January preliminary hearing in Las Vegas Justice Court for several felony charges, including felony coercion, grand larceny, and robbery in connection with a Sept. 9 domestic violence incident with his three children and their mother, Josie Harris.

Martinez knocks out Williams in round 2 with one punch!

Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs) has become the best middleweight in the world by knocking out the dangerous Paul Williams (39-2, 27 KOs) in just two rounds at the  Boardwalk Hall, New Jersey to defend his 160 lb title.

We knew this fight could be explosive but I don’t think anyone could have expected what took place last night.

Williams came out extremely aggressive and starting putting the pressure on Martinez early. Martinez with right hooks and left crosses from Williams whistling passed his ear seemed slightly set back by Williams early onslaught.

The first round saw some good action fought at a high pace and it seemed as though this was going to suit Williams the longer it went.

Pacquiao wins 8th world title by beating Margarito

The weight advantage for Margarito meant nothing to Pacquiao

The weight advantage for Margarito meant nothing to Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs) has made history once again by winning an eighth world title by defeating Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs) for the vacant WBC light middleweight title.

Pacquiao’s brilliance was at times a beauty to behold – unleashing multiple punches all with such speed and deadly accuracy. It’s a miracle Margarito’s face held up for him to finish the fight on his feet which was only right really considering the gallant effort he put forth.

At first it seemed it would be an easy night for the Pacman realing off punches and stepping away to the side everytime – keeping Margarito off-balance and never letting him plant his feet to unleash his punches.

Haye batters Harrison as expected

David Haye (25-1, 23 KOs) demolished Audley Harrison (27-5, 20 KOs) in just three rounds to defend his WBA heavyweight title in front of a packed crowd at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester.

The fight was considered by boxing fans and experts alike as a farce – a soft opponent for Haye instead of taking up the challenge of facing one of the Klitschko brothers – and it proved to be just that.

Harrison was timid from the outset seemingly waiting for a perfect moment to throw a punch that never came. Neither fighter did anything for the first two rounds and the crowd were letting their feelings be known and wanted their money’s worth.

Pacquiao 144.6, Margarito 150

Yesterday when Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito took to the stage for their weigh in the crowd were in feverish anticipation and then it happened.

Manny Pacquiao 144.6 lbs!

I’m sorry what did you say?

Most were expecting Pacquiao to at least be at 147 which he was for Joshua Clottey in his last fight. Even for Cotto he weighed in at 145 and by the time he stepped into the ring was a proper welter.

But 144 for a fight contested at 150 and for a belt that is at 154 lbs?

The question now becomes

What if any implications will Manny Pacquiao face by coming in so low against the bigger, stronger man.

The Hero vs The Villain

Congressman Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) challenges for an eighth title on Saturday night at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium against Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) in what could be in excess of 60,000 people in attendance.

The fight is for the vacant WBC light middleweight title to be contested at a catchweight of 150 lbs.

The fight has become almost a hero vs villain scenario – can the Pacman save boxing again?

There is no disputing who the villain of the piece here is. Margarito plagued by the hand wrapping scandal that nearly ended his career for good is being given a second chance. A chance at redemption and a chance to show he is still the same fighter that broke down Miguel Cotto in 2008.
