Odlanier Drums On Drummond: Scores TKO!

In three rounds the world can change for a fighter. In three rounds a man can make a statement. In three rounds a fighter can prove to the world that he’s truly ready. In three rounds, on Saturday night, Odlanier Solis made that statement, changed his own world, and proved to everyone that he’s the prospect we all hoped he might be. In three rounds Odlanier drummed on Carl Davis Drummond for a lopsided and definitive victory.

No man had ever stopped the Costa Rican Drummond before, but Carl had never faced “La Sombra” Solis before. In abject disappointment, Drummond was forced into retiring after only the 3rd stanza of a scheduled 10 rounder. He knew he was in way over his head and it’s surprising he even lasted that long. Solis improved to 16 straight wins, no losses, with 12 stoppages. Promoter Ahmet Öner chimed in, “the way Drumond retired in the corner is not what fans want to see but you have to understand the guy who was clearly worried about his health. He recognized that Solis is out of his league.”

Sechew Chews Up Latimore In a Title Eliminator Rematch

On 3-19, Sechew Powell got revenge. Powell (now 26-2) beat Deandre Latimore over 12 rounds with a Majority Decision. The fight was a rematch of a July 2008 battle that saw Sechew get knocked out for the only time in his career, a seventh round TKO. But now Powell has the upper hand and the latest victory between the two. Judge David Sutherland had it 117-111, Judge Chris Flores had it 114-114, and Judge: Gerald Ritter saw it 116-112 in Powell “The Iron Horse”‘s favor.

In the Latimore rematch, Sechew found a home for the jab about midway through the fight and outlanded Latimore 69-20 for the final 6 rounds with it. Deandre actually gave a very busy effort, averaging 67 punches per round, but landed fewer than 20% of those shots. Sechew’s defense was certainly better than in their first bout, 21 months ago. Powell scored with 27% of his jabs and 32% of his power punches, soundly out-performing Deandre in every category.

Sam Peter Blasts Back Into Title Contention with a TKO Win

Former WBC champ Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter faced off against #12 ranked Nagy “Dominican Dynamite” Aguilera on March 12th in an IBF Heavyweight Eliminator. Peter is ranked #4 by the IBF and was hoping to get back into title contention with this fight and came in with a record of 33-3 with 26 knockouts. Aguilera had 15 wins and 2 losses, 10 KOs to his name.

The fight took place in the Gaylord Grapevine Hotel in Texas before a modest crowd, shown by Top Rank on Fox Espanol. The first round started out pretty even with both guys feeling each other out. But with a minute left Peter started landing some power shots and Nagy seemed easily pushed back. In the second round Aguilera made the mistake of trying to exchange with the “Nightmare” and tasted canvas halfway through the round. He acted unfazed and was quickly on his feet, but Peter smelled blood and honed in for the kill.

Darchinyan Pummels a Man Who Won’t Go Down

Vic Darchinyan

Vic Darchinyan

Vic Darchinyan and his camp didn’t expect a long night. Yes, it’s boxing. And yes, boxing often entails 12 grueling round of action. But not when you’re fighting a guy with only 13 wins. But that’s exactly what Mexico’s Rodrigo Guerrero managed to give Vic – a long night.

Darchinyan retained his WBC and WBA super flyweight titles by earning a unanimous decision over young Guerrero. He pounded Guerrero around the ring, battered him, inflicting constant damage. But he was unable to stop Rodrigo and get the 28th knockout everyone expected him to get early on. “This kid, I respect how he took punches,” Darchinyan said. “I couldn’t believe how he took punches. He kept coming back. I respect him. He’s good. I thought I was going to stop him. I gave him good punches but I couldn’t.”

The NEW Unified Champ! – Alexander Bests Urango

Alexander v Urango

Alexander lands against Urango

It was the classic brawler versus boxer matchup and it lived up to all the promise. Juan Urango, the IBF jr welterweight champ faced off against the upcoming young lion Devon Alexander “The Great”, the WBC champ on HBO. The Mohegan Sun Casino rocked and roared with the punches as the fight thrilled and impressed the fans. Devon came in as a slight underdog, the 23 year old who might have been in deep water. Juan came in with a big reputation as a granite fisted puncher looking to do damage and get on top of the division.

Ortiz Returns With KO

Victor Ortiz vs Hector Alatorre

Last June 2009, Victor Ortiz was upset by Argentina’s Marcos Rene Maidana via sixth-round TKO at Staples Center. At that time many fans questioned his heart and his chances as an up-and-coming prospect. “There’s never a place where people are happy,” the junior-welterweight Ortiz said. “If I beat Maidana, he’s a nobody. He beat me, and I’m exposed.” All this, even though Victor koncked Marcos down three times in that same fight.

“Everyone has their opinions and people handle situations differently,” Ortiz said.”It was an off night. It’s in the past.”

Glen Johnson Goes To War

Yusaf Mack Hits The Deck Against Glen Johnson

Like a soldier pounding through the trenches, Glen Johnson never lets up. He’s the Road Warrior. He’s the consumate veteran. He’s worked for and earned every inch he’s gained in the boxing world. And he’s back baby!

February 5th 2010 has seen the rebirth, rejuvenation, and revitilization of Glen Johnson as a title contender. In a small town called Davie in South Florida, the 41 year old Johnson took it to the house against the favored Yusaf Mack, knocking him down 3 times in the sixth round to earn an unexpected technical decision. The referee waved it off, Mack had no complaint, and Johnson’s hands were raised in victory. It was a thrilling return to form for the man who knocked Roy Jones Jr out in devastating fashion 5 years ago. And it means one more title shot for the hard-scrabble man born in Jamaica, who now calls Florida home.
