42 (43 by fight time) year old Johnny Tapia 56-5-2 (28) returns to the ring on March
6th against an opponent yet to be named.
The former world super flyweight, bantamweight and featherweight champion will fight at the Ohkay Casino in Tapia’s home state of New Mexico.
Tapia was knocked out in 2 rounds in 2005 to Sandro Marcos in his penultimate bout and most recently fought in February 2007 when winning a majority ten round decision over journeyman Evaristo Primero. The only thing that might possibly stop the Tapia return is the fact that he is still in prison due to a violation of his parole conditions.
However, Tapia is due out any day and despite being completely past his best will undoubtedly sell out a venue in New Mexico.
Lets be under no illusions here, Tapia is probably completely shot but in many ways I don’t begrudge him making a comeback. If matched very carefully, he should not get hurt and Tapia’s life and lifestlye are such a hectic mess, boxing could at the very best keep him alive.
