Dempsey - Willard
World heavyweight championship
On July 4, 1919, in the furnace of Toledo (Ohio), Jess Willard, world champion heavyweight, puts his title against his young compatriot, Jack Dempsey.
Thirteen inches and twenty-six pounds between the two men when they get in the ring. But after four rounds dramatic accompanies Dempsey Willard in his corner a fallen and broken, which will never be the same.
This championship is between two men with consistent morphological differences. From its 1.98 m, Jess Willard, Jack Johnson less muscular, heavier and legs that did not offer athletic ability to move smoothly is a massive ogre to colossal scale. For his second defense, he has an advantage of 26 kg (111 kg against 85 kg) and nearly 13 inches of Jack Dempsey, his young challenger.
Despite fourteen years apart, The "Manassa Mauler" has over 100 fights

unofficial twice Willard. With his style while hopping action, picked up on itself, which makes it seem even less, he ahead of his opponent, humming a barely audible voice, to distribute his brutal beatings in rhythm.
In the locker room, just minutes from the entrance to her foal, "Doc" Kearns admits that he has bet his entire purse to 10 against one of his victory in the first round. Moments later, when face to face, Dempsey seems a "child" at the foot of a mountain!
Yet when the gong, violence exploded giant overtaken. The cowboy who had never been to the floor in eight-year career, embrace it once on a combination of four lightning strokes. As he clings to the ropes to get up, back in action, Dempsey enraged, strikes without mercy. Neutral corner rule does not exist. The opposition is running at a terrifying correction. The challenger over Willard waiting for the champion's left glove to hit the ground without restraint. Never one round will be as wild and humiliating.
Willard falls seven times in three minutes, the Texan demonstrated extraordinary courage. Aggressive in the tornado, the cries of the public, the referee does not hear the final bell
the first round! Convinced that he won the bet, while Willard, crouching, spits two of his teeth broken jaw, Dempsey left the ring to the cheers.
While the champion is driven in his corner, his mouth bleeding, Dempsey is recalled to complete his extermination business. In this confusion, it seems impossible to say who or Willard Dempsey was most surprised to have to resume. Having weathered the storm for two rounds, Willard is unable to leave his stool when the bell rang the fourth round. Jack Dempsey was world champion.
Red Smith, a New York Times complained: "The state of Willard, after those few times of fury, appears to require less medical services than those of an undertaker". It will never get back the full hearing.
A few days later, doubts will be issued on the hardness of the hands of the new king of heavy. They are reflected in the statements of Willard believes that "no one can hit as hard. His hands were like iron hammers." In his biography, the giant even claims to have kept the bolts found in the corner opponent whom the challenger had in their hands when they

confrontation.
Asked about the possibility that he bandages soaked in plaster surgical Kearns replied initially, with humor: "I never made such a dirty trick! If you want to know, I soaked gloves in full cement! "
In her memoirs, it suggests that in fact these rumors about the bandages moistened plaster of Paris, were based. But Dempsey said in his magnificent biography, written by his daughter in 1977 that the gloves contained nothing but dynamite in his fists, while the rest was nonsense and bitterness.

Post Re: Dempsey - Willard
Dempsey - Willard
