First defense to Erik Morales


The news was announced on HBO this weekend, the reigning WBC Super Featherweight Erik "El Terrible" Morales (52-7, 36 KO) will make the first defense of his title against the undefeated Danny Garcia (22 - 0, 14 KO) on January 28. In the same meeting, the KO artist James Kirkland (30-1, 27 KO) will face Carlos Molina (19-4-2, 6 KOs) in a semi-final WBC Super-welterweight. Title held by Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. The meeting, organized by Golden Boy Promotions, will take place at the Reliant Arena in Houston for the first show of 2012 for HBO.

Looks like a very solid card to open the new year. Both bouts could be very competitive.

Is it strange that Kirkland has to beat Molina to earn his shot when he just beat Angulo who was much higher rated than Molina? Then again why am I questioning the sanctioning bodies? We all know they are mad...

It is about protecting Alvarez. In July of 2010 Angulo fought a WBC title eliminator making him the #1 contender. Eight months later the WBC had Alvarez and M. Hatton fight for the vacant title ignoring the mandatory #1 Angulo completely. At the time both Alvarez and Hatton were ranked in the welterweight(not even ranked at 154) division by the WBC. So Angulo sits around waiting for a year and loses to Kirkland. So Kirkland is now the mandatory right? No, instead of Alvarez fighting a #1 contender, they make Kirkland fight Molina, while Alvarez gets to pick his next challenger. Molina gets the call because he beat Cintron, who for losing got Alvarez.
So if there is a formula here, look for the loser to get Alvarez and the winner to wait a year before fighting another eliminator.
