Le 30 octobre 1974, à 3 heures du matin au stade du 20 mai de Kinshasa au Zaïre, le plus célèbre combat de l’histoire, baptisé «The Rumble in Jungle» (tremblement dans la jungle), oppose Muhammad Ali au terrifiant Georges Foreman, champion du monde des lourds depuis sa victoire sur Joe Frazier.
Cet événement dépasse le cadre traditionnel du sport. Revenu sur sa propre terre, comme il aime à le répéter, Ali soulève un enthousiasme populaire sans précédent avant de conquérir de nouveau le titre mondial, alors que quasiment personne ne l'en croyait capable.
Peu pensait Don King, un jeune promoteur sorti de prison trois années auparavant, capable d’organiser ce choc entre Foreman, l’invaincu champion, et ali, le plus médiatique des boxeurs. Suite au fiasco vénézuelien de Foreman-Norton, King ne possède pas les ressources financières pour espérer une telle entreprise. Deux de ses deux meilleurs boxeurs, Ernie Shavers notamment, viennent de se faire étaler en un seul round. Mais il réussit à convaincre Muhammad Ali grâce à ses entremises auprès de son ami musicien Lloyd Price, puis Georges Foreman au motif de la «solidarité afro-américaine». Il boucle son subtil montage avec l’appui de la Vidéotechnic, une société américaine de diffusion en circuit fermé (qui va installer 357 écrans à travers le monde afin d’attirer 2 millions de téléspectateurs payants) et la garantie de 10 millions de dollars en bourse faite par le colonel Joseph Désiré Mobutu. Un «cadeau au peuple Zaïrois» précise l’affiche à la hauteur de la démesure du président d'un pays où règne tant de misère.
Conciliant mysticisme et réalisme, King offre une aventure extraordinaire: mettre l’Afrique au centre de l’événement de l’année qui dépasse le cadre traditionnel du sport par l’organisation de nombreux concerts de stars américains (BB King, James Brown, The Temptation...).

La stupeur générale accueille l’annonce du lieu de ce championnat prévu le 25 septembre. Si les considérations financières l’expliquent, ce choix marque surtout par sa forte symbolique politique. Cette

ancienne colonie belge devenue indépendante fût victime de nombreuses déportations d’esclaves vers les Etats-unis. Le terrain idéal pour un homme qui s’est battu pour une certaine idée de la liberté. Muhammad Ali débarque le 11 septembre à Kinshasa. Des milliers de zaïrois sont au rendez-vous. Même privés d’électricité, tous connaissent «leur frère d’Amérique». Devant tant de visages de gosses heureux de le voir et tant de dessins peints sur les mûrs à sa gloire, Ali chavire: «Je suis ici chez moi». Jamais un boxeur ne ressentira une telle communion avec le contexte d'un combat. Convié au palais présidentiel, il s’adresse à Mobutu: «Mr le président, je suis citoyen américain depuis 32 ans et je n’ai jamais été invité à la maison blanche. Soyez assuré de l’honneur que vous me faites d'être convié à la maison noire». Toujours aussi loquace, il n’a pas besoin d’exploiter son génie pour «diaboliser» son adversaire d'une simple boutade. «Foreman est un belge !», dit-il et rappelle le comportement d’«Oncle Tom» du champion lors des JO de 1968, alors même que certains de ses compatriotes avaient tendus leurs poings gantés en signe de révolte.

Si Ali se persuade de son rêve de reconquête, quasiment personne ne lui donne la moindre chance. A 25 ans, Foreman semble invincible. Il impressionne tant qu’on le qualifie de «plus terrifiant combattant jamais vu sur un ring». Son punch vient de pulvériser les deux vainqueurs d’Ali (Frazier et Norton). En trois championnats, il n’a passé que douze minutes sur le carré magique.
Dix ans après son succès sur Liston (l’idole de Foreman), Ali tente un pari insensé devant un adversaire de 8 ans son cadet, bien plus lourd et puissant. Georges Foreman est le premier à croire qu’Ali ne tiendra pas longtemps. Devant sa présence massive et hostile, la presse alimente ses craintes de voir tourner l'affrontement en «massacre». «Comment Frazier et Norton ont pu tenir 24 rounds face à Ali et même pas 5 minutes face au champion ! Georges ne tue pas le vieux Muhammad !»

Pour Angelo Dundee, l’entraîneur d’Ali, «ce ton est excellent. Plus la presse vante Foreman, plus Muhammad sera motivé de se voir donné perdant». Mais Ali, agacé par tant d’unanimité et de certitudes, se fâche. «Foreman est lent et ses pieds sont plats. Tout le monde croit qu’il va m’anéantir ! Vous n’avez pas retenu la leçon face à Liston ? Je vais quitter la boxe comme j’y suis entré. Avec fracas, en détrônant un monstre invincible ! Vous qui croyez que Foreman va me punir ! Malheureusement à quelques jours du rendez-vous, l’arcade de Foreman cède lors d’une séance d’entraînement. Le challenger, qui sait que son adversaire ne se sent pas à l’aise dans ce climat, craint sa «fuite». Foreman se heurte alors à une impossibilité matérielle de quitter le pays: tous les avions sont sous contrôle... Au terme de longues discussions, King persuade les deux camps de différer la «rixe» de 5 semaines, au soir du 30 octobre 1974 à 3 heures du matin locales, afin de favoriser la retransmission à heure de grande écoute aux Etats-Unis. Les deux boxeurs s’engagent à rester sur place pour parfaire leur préparation. Une aubaine pour Ali qui se nourrit de son triomphe populaire. Tous ses footings s’accompagnent d’un bain de foule extraordinaire. Il tombe à 97 kilos, un poids qu’il n’a pas atteint depuis son retour sur les rings. De son coté, à Nsele (à 60 km de la capitale), le Texan effraie de puissance par ses longues séances
de frappe au sac, sa facilité à «couper la route» à ses sparrings poids moyens très mobiles et son assurance. «Qu’importe la durée, l’important c’est que j’arrive à le toucher et je le descendrai tôt ou tard», compensent sa souffrance. Celle que lui inflige moralement Ali par ses multiples déclarations qui le privent de la moindre popularité. «Je suis deux fois plus noir qu’Ali, et pourtant les gens ici ne m’acclament pas !» Foreman s’acharne à la besogne pour s’évader de cet environnement qui l’empoisonne.

Si la pesée est marquée par quelques fantaisies du challenger, une toute autre atmosphère règne dans son vestiaire dans le stade «du 20 mai». Aucun mot ne pourra jamais décrite cette interminable attente, ces incroyables montées d’adrénaline et de craintes, ces minutes pesantes quasi religieuses où Ali et tous ses fidèles prient de longues minutes à genoux. Dundee et Bundini livides, dont l’angoisse marque le faciès trouvent quelques mots si précieux: «Oublie tous les combats ! Il n’y a que celui-là: un homme face à un homme, d’une âme contre une autre !». Un combat se gagne parfois sur ces instants, sur cette gestion psychologique de l’influx. Tous les encouragements reçus des zaïrois ont investit le challenger d’une mission: ne pas décevoir ses lueurs dans leurs yeux.

Monté en premier sur le ring dans un superbe peignoir blanc à motifs islamiques, Ali se livre à une séance de «shadow» qui soulève l’enthousiasme général. Puis, il fixe le ciel une nouvelle fois. Foreman use d’un vieux truc en le faisant attendre délibérément. Lorsque le champion surgit, il mesure son rôle de «mal aimé» alors qu’Ali semble s’être alimenté de l’ambiance durant l’attente.
