Frazier - Foreman

Frazier - Foreman
World heavyweight championship
On January 22, 1973, days after the death of President Lyndon Johnson, the undisputed king of heavyweight, "Smoking" Joe Frazier, accepts the challenge as he launched his young compatriot, George Foreman, Olympic champion heavyweight like him .
The event, entitled "The Sunshine Showdown", is organized in the capital of Jamaica, Kingston.
In March 1967. Muhammad Ali did not know it yet. A few months after overcoming Zora Folley, a severe punishment he takes off his world title, following his refusal to include the U.S. Army at war in Vietnam. Jimmy Ellis, a stooge, is designated champion in his stead.

Yet another man has already attracted attention. His name, Joe Frazier. From his early output, as a reincarnation of Black Rocky Marciano, the boy impresses. Big hitter, his explosiveness and his famous left hook to the rank of the rank phenomenon. In 1968, "Smoking" finds Buster Mathis who beat him twice in the amateurs. The two rivals are engaged

an intense duel. Frazier wins the 11th, then defended the belt against the NYSAC Bonavena, Ramos and Quarry. In February 1970, he reunited the expense of Ellis (4th). Still, a victory over Ali himself is essential to be considered the real champion.
This is the start of their famous rivalry. The "clash of the century" Frazier-Ali signed March 8, 1971 at Madison Square Garden. Frazier, the underdog, book a real war. And during the 15th and final round, he fired a left hook to the face of Ali who will be remembered. It crashed heavily to the ground. Joe won the unanimous verdict.
To recover the "hot boss" is taking no chances in 1972. Gradually, he devotes more time to his band, the Knock-outs, to the room. Despite its immense popularity, Joe looks appetizing a juicy re-match against Ali. The whole world watches the announcement of the second act. Yet, against all odds, Frazier accepted another challenge. The Olympic launched by his successor, the winner of the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968, George Foreman. The shock went into exile in Kingston, Jamaica. All specialists are unanimous. Without neglecting its potential and his record (37 fights, 34 KO), Foreman, hope this young 24 years old, has neither the experience nor the skills to thwart the tireless "jukebox". For many, this fight does not seem prepared for a round the champion (favorite 3 against 1) that the hooks sharp as razor blades reach the rookie, even if fighting with closed eyes.
Stepped into the ring at the National Stadium, in a bathrobe blood color, the challenger to physical giant dance
relax. While Joe Frazier, acclaimed, makes its way through the crowd, Foreman shakes his head to heat his neck. Impassive. When instructions Arthur Mercante, a monumental confrontation between the two chilling. Frazier stares at its prey. Foreman fixes like a fawn. However, it later admitted: "This time I moved to the depths, it was terrible! Fortunately, Joe has not looked down as my knees were shaking. "

Once the gong, the "leech Philadelphia" shorter than 12 cm, plunging ahead with dodges and high guard. His opponent control the pressure and managed to keep its distance to place heavy direct. But suddenly a terrible launches Frazier left hook. Seconds later, another missile fuse of his guard. Foreman understands that these famous left to graze his temple can stop it at any time. After two minutes, the challenger takes the initiative. Camped in the center of the ring, he pushes his opponent with both arms, the position at a safe distance, then goes on his powerful blows. A heavy left and a right uppercut collide violently Frazier. It capsizes and is found on the ground. Stunned, the audience exploded with emotion.
Joe stands up and slaps his forehead with his gloves. "It will heat, Foreman was angry!" Enthuses Don Dunphy at the microphone ABC. But once again touched, forced to increase its rotating dodges instead of hitting, Frazier was trapped in a corner. He tries a few

cons of the left, but is picked by a solid uppercut right. And it collapses. Proven in search of balance, it is unthinkable to see him give up. However, three other project it still blows on the back! The referee announces the count but the bell rings. Led on his stool, Frazier is groggy.

True to its reputation, however, he returned to the attack in the second round. Dominated by power, a long straight forwards it to the mat. The two hooks projecting back to earth. Courageous, Frazier got up a fifth time, but a right uppercut last humiliates more. On this one, Joe off the ground like a disjointed puppet. Mercante ends his ordeal. Foreman has made the most devastating display of power ever seen on a ring.
