World champion middleweight for nearly three years (1923-1926), American Pittsburgh was blind since the boost given to the ring in 1921. That did not stop to realize an outstanding career during which he beat the greatest champions of his time, means the heavy. Born in Pittsburgh, Edward Henry Greb turned professional in May 1913 at the age of 18. Disdaining the drive, it makes up for this lack by an incredible activity in the ring when he takes pleasure in hurting his opponents. Thus, it delivers 68 fights between 1917 and 1918, then 44 the following year by mounting the ring sometimes four times in the same week.
True average weight (71.5 kg for 1.73 m), he fought mostly in mid-heavy. Despite his excessive taste for alcohol and a life of debauchery, the great seducer is a virtuoso who can also use the tricks of the trade irregular: elbowing, cheap shots and other shots head. Greb won his first summit in May 1922 for the U.S. title heavyweight, undefeated at the Gene Tunney, heavyweight future king. It imposes its only loss, a terrible correction in 15 rounds. So much so that to win a global opportunity in the means, he developed a Machiavellian ruse to convince Johnny to confront Wilson August 31, 1923.
He enlists a few bartenders in New York in order to give a picture of an alcoholic. In fact, he only drinks water color. New unflattering about his alleged drunken evenings reaching the ears of Wilson convinces his manager to sign the fight. "It's time to box it beggar," said he. Harry Greb, he, angrily waiting for the deadline. On the day, it seeks to punish the champion that he pays his responsibility to have avoided for many years. One newspaper summed up the fight, "Wilson was lucky to emerge alive after the 15 rounds. It was very close to being murdered. "

His greatest defense comes July 2, 1925 against the "miniature bulldog" Mickey Walker, welterweight king, at the Polo Ground in New York. After an unprecedented war that will continue the evening in the parking lot of a nightclub, Greb essential points. But February 26, 1926, Tiger Flowers is the solution to dominate Greb and pocket the title on a close decision to become the first champion of the means of color. Six months later, suffocated by the heat New York, Greb fails the other hand, not knowing that evening he delivers his last fight. Hospitalized after a car accident for a nose job, he died October 22, 1926 of cardiac arrest during anesthesia at the age of 32 years.

La raison d'une telle carrière est simple: il était une véritable machine à boxer, baptisé "le moulin à vent de Pittsburg", capable d'asséner d'impressionnantes séries de coups. Il était aussi dur au mal et pouvait encaisser des punchs de poids lourds sans broncher. Et pourtant, on apprendra bien plus tard que Harry Greb était borgne !

Tommy Loughram avant de le perdre lors de la revanche devant Tunney. Mais son chef d'oeuvre pour le titre mondial s'opére hors du ring. Si ses exploits en mi-lourds impressionnent le public et son plus grand supporter, Ernest Hemingway, ils effraient surtout ses adversaires. A tel point que pour décrocher une opportunité mondiale chez les moyens, il élabore une ruse machiavélique pour convaincre Johnny Wilson de l'affronter le 31 août 1923.

Harry Greb, lui, attend l'échéance avec rage. Le jour J, il s'efforce de punir le champion afin qu'il paie sa responsabilité pour l'avoir évité durant plusieurs années. Un journal résume ainsi le combat: «Wilson fut chanceux de ressortir vivant après ses 15 rounds. Il était tout proche d'être assassiné.»

Au terme d'une guerre inouïe qui continuera le soir sur le parking d'un nightclub, Greb s'impose aux points. Mais le 26 février 1926, Tiger Flowers trouve la solution pour dominer Greb et empocher le titre sur une décision serrée pour devenir le premier champion des moyens de couleur. Six mois plus tard, asphyxié par la chaleur new yorkaise, Greb échoue lors de la revanche, ne sachant pas ce soir-là qu'il livre son dernier combat. Hospitalisé après un accident de voiture pour une opération du nez, il décède le 22 octobre 1926 d'un arrêt cardiaque durant l’anesthésie à l’âge de 32 ans.
