Le 19 novembre 1943, le Madison Square Garden de New York accueille la revanche entre Bob Montgomery et Beau Jack pour le titre mondial NYSAC des légers. Un affrontement entre deux magnifiques boxeurs américains qui ont marqué l’âge d’or des catégories légères dans les années 40.
Six mois auparavant, sous ce même dôme du «Garden», le "Chat" Bob Mongomery, surnommé ainsi pour son allure longiligne, avait réussi à exploiter sa boxe fluide pour détrôner le bouillant Beau Jack aux points unanimement, au terme de 15 rounds intenses. Paré de ce titre de la commission de New-York, et titulaire d’un palmarès conséquent de 50 victoires dont 26 KO, 3 nuls pour seulement 4 défaites toutes concédées aux points, Bob Montgomery part favori de ce revanche à 4 contre 1.

De son coté, Sidney Walker alias "Beau Jack", l’ex-cireur de chaussure de l’hôtel du golf d’Augusta, compte également 50 victoires dont 28 KO pour

2 nuls. Devenu le protégé de Bobby Jones, ex-star des greens, il est, à 21 ans, la nouvelle idole du Madison pour avoir connu la consécration sur ce ring lors de l'année 1942: vainqueur de Tippy Larkin en trois rounds, puis du sublime Henry Armstrong avant de découvrir le goût amer de l’échec devant Montgomery, puis face au limité Bobby Ruffin.

La salle est comble à l’entrée des deux champions. Le public connaisseur se régale d’avance d’assister à une telle opposition de styles entre la boxe élégante du "Chat" du haut de ses 1,73 m et le "Slam-Bang" (frappe claquée) de l’ex-tenant, boxeur plus musculeux mais tout autant en longueur (1,68 m). Dès les premiers rounds, l’intensité physique et la boxe volontaire de Beau Jack semble lui donner l’avantage. Pendant les cinq premières reprises, le champion se contente d’allonger son direct gauche pour tenter de garder son challenger à distance et de lancer quelques droites en ligne.
Montgomery tourne autour de son adversaire mais celui-ci, tel un rouleau compresseur, lance un important volume de coups notamment de lourdes droites en cross et de très courts crochets en particulier. La musculature développée de Beau Jack lui donne une impression de solidité au regard du champion.

Durant les rounds suivants, l’intensité monte encore sur le ring: les charges du challenger continuent de tout sens. Parfois désorganisé, son style risqué l’expose à des contres de Montgomery. Malgré sa boxe et sa réputation, Beau Jack ne possède pas suffisamment de don du ciel pour placer le coup décisif. Et les rounds
défilent. La lutte continue et sa domination reste légère.
En se lançant au 11e round, il se fait contrer par une droite. Mais les 3 derniers rounds et sa débauche de vitalité lui permettent de marquer les points suffisants pour bénéficier d’une décision unanime et récupèrer son titre mondial.

Deux autres combats seront organisés entre ces futurs pensionnaires du "Hall of Fame". Quatre mois plus tard, pour la "Belle", Montgomery reprend, en toute impunité, le titre sur une décision partagée qui arrange de nouveau certains parieurs... Les deux hommes se retrouveront encore le 4 août 1944, cette fois-ci sans titre en jeu, Beau Jack l’emportant aux points en 10 rounds.

Les carrières des deux boxeurs seront interrompues pour leur mobilisation dans l’armée, mais à la fin de la guerre, Montgomery défendra son titre à deux reprises: en juin 1946, il stoppe Allie Stolz, puis en novembre il met KO Wesley Mouzon. Le 4 Août 1947, lors de la réunification du titre mondial des légers, il est mis KO au par Ike Williams, le champion NBA, et ne se relèvera jamais de ce cuisant affront. Il enchaîne six défaites consécutives avant de se retirer en mars 1950, avec un palmarès de 75 victoires 19 défaites et 3 nuls. Introduit au "Hall of Fame", il est reconnu par certains spécialistes américains comme l’un des plus beaux poids légers de l’histoire.

Beau Jack se retire en août 1955. Monté chez les welters, il remporte brillamment quelques joutes contre de grandes références tels Sammy Angott en juillet 1946, Jonnhy Bratton en janvier 1948, ou encore Tony Janiro en mai 1948.
Un an après Montgomery, en juillet 1948, il est violemment punit au 6e round par Ike Williams pour le titre unifié des légers. Battu par Kid Galivan l’année suivante, il remporte encore quelques féroces batailles notamment contre Lew Jenkins... avant son 119e et dernier combat lors duquel il est mis KO par son éternel rival Ike Williams.
Consacré boxeur de l’année 1944 par "The Ring", l‘ironie de la vie le pousse après son retrait des rings, et bien qu’il fut l’un des boxeurs les plus populaires d'Amérique durant cet "âge d’or", à gagner sa vie en cirant des chaussures, comme au début de sa vie.

Six months ago, under the same dome of the "Garden", the "Chat" Bob Montgomery, known for his speed and slender, had managed to use his boxing to dethrone the fluid boiling points unanimously Beau Jack, after 15 intense rounds . Adorned with the title of the Committee on New York and holds a record of 50 victories thus including 26 KO, 3 draws only 4 defeats conceded all the points, Bob Montgomery is favorite of revenge against 4 1.

For his part, Sidney Walker aka "Beau Jack", the former shoeshine at the Hotel du Golf in Augusta, also has 50 wins with 28 KO

From the early rounds, the physical intensity and boxing voluntary Beau Jack seems to give him the advantage. During the first five times, the champion simply extend its direct left to try to keep his challenger at a distance and run some straight line.
Montgomery revolves around his opponent but he, like a steamroller, is launching a large volume of heavy blows straight in particular cross and short hooks in particular. The musculature of Beau Jack gives a solid feel with regard to the champion.

In the following rounds, the intensity rises again in the ring: the challenger's charges remain meaningless. Sometimes disorganized, his style is exposed to risky cons of Montgomery. Despite his boxing and his reputation, Beau Jack does not have enough godsend to place the decisive blow. And rounds
scroll. The struggle continues and remains light domination.
By engaging in the 11th round, he is overcome by a straight line. But the last 3 rounds and debauch of vitality allow him to score enough points to qualify for a unanimous decision and get his world title.

Two other fights will be held between the future residents of the "Hall of Fame". Four months later, the "Belle", Montgomery again, with impunity, the title on a split decision which settles back some bettors ... The two men will meet again Aug. 4, 1944, this time without a title at stake, Beau Jack win on points in 10 rounds.

The careers of both boxers will be suspended for their mobilization in the army, but at the end of the war, Montgomery will defend his title twice, in June 1946, he stopped Allie Stolz, and in November he knocked out Wesley Mouzon. On August 4, 1947, when the reunification of the world as light, it is knocked in by Ike Williams, the NBA champion, and will never rise again of the stinging insult. He followed six straight losses before retiring in March 1950 with a record of 75 victories, 19 defeats and three draws. Introduced to the "Hall of Fame", it is recognized by some American experts as one of the best lightweight in history.

Beau Jack retired in August 1955. Mounted in welterweight, he won some brilliant games against major references like Sammy Angott in July 1946, Bratton Jonnhy in January 1948, or Tony Janiro in May 1948.
One year after Montgomery in July 1948, he was severely punished in the sixth round by Ike Williams for the title of unified light. Defeated by Kid Galivan the following year, he won a few fierce battles especially against Lew Jenkins ... before his 119th and final fight in which he is knocked out by his eternal rival Ike Williams.
Dedicated boxer of the year 1944 by "The Ring", the irony of life pushes him after his retirement from the ring, and although he was one of the most popular boxers of America during this "age of or "to make a living by shining shoes, as at the beginning of his life.
