Jean Bretonnel
(1910-1990)

De ses débuts d'organisateur à l'âge de 15 ans aux Folies-Belleville à son dernier championnat du monde en 1987, il a donné plus de soixante ans de sa vie à la boxe. Jean Bretonnel est l'un des plus grands managers de boxeurs, mais également entraîneur et organisateur. Il conduit les carrière de grands champions français de Villemain à Bouttier, en passant par Diouf, Langlois, Ballarin, Pigout et autres Nollet, Pavilla, Zami et les frères Warusfel.
Jean Bretonnel, c'était un physique à la Gabin, une chemise noire et une gouaille de titi parisien. Bretonnel, c'était aussi «Monsieur Jean» pour ses boxeurs avec qui il avait adopté le vouvoiement réciproque. Jean Bretonnel, c'était enfin un grand entraîneur, un manager de champions à l'écoute de ses protégés.
Né dans le XVIe arrondissement de Paris le 18 janvier 1910, Jean Bretonnel semble se diriger vers une carrière cycliste sous les couleurs du Voltaire Sportif, mais il se passionne pour le noble art où son frère aîné Fred décroche le titre de champion d'Europe des légers en 1924. Il a tout juste 15 ans lorsqu'il devient organisateur de soirées de boxe.


Avec son ami Georges Février, il monte des galas aux Folies-Belleville. Trois ans plus tard, il coiffe la casquette de manager. Ses débuts sont difficiles, comme la vie qui lui arrache son frère Fred, lequel met fin à ses jours.

Un après-midi, le jeune Bretonnel passe devant un local à louer, près du Central. Quelques semaines passent et le 22 Faubourg Saint-Denis ouvre ses portes sur un club de boxe. Cette salle sera celle de Monsieur Jean durant de nombreuses années. Il y passe des journées complètes à conseiller des débutants comme ceux qui l'ont suivi de sa première salle, rue de Vaugirard, il entraîne les plus assidus, soigne les blessés de la veille, signe des contrats et allume le feu chaque matin d'hiver.

Raymond Lepage est son premier champion de France professionnel (poids lourd) en 1935, suivi de près par Robert Bourdet. Il accueille quelques temps plus tard le Sénégalais Assane Diouf et Omar le Noir qui décrochent également le titre national juste avant qu'éclate la seconde guerre mondiale. Bretonnel est incorporé, c'est son épouse Lucienne, que les boxeurs surnomment «Madame Jean», qui veille sur sa salle.
A la libération, «Monsieur Jean» organise à l'Elysée Montmartre et il traverse le Faubourg Saint-Denis pour implanter sa salle au n°23. C'est là qu'il fait la connaissance de Robert Villemain, le seul à avoir employer
le «tu» avec son professeur. Trois ans après ses débuts professionnels, il apporte à son entraîneur son premier titre européen (poids welters), en février 1947. Le duo découvre alors l'Amérique, l'Eldorado de la boxe, en décembre 1948. Jean Bretonnel y retrouve son père après vingt-cinq ans de séparation et Villemain s'y fait vite un nom, même s'il subit deux premiers échecs devant Belloise et LaMotta sur le ring du Madison Square Garden. Mais il prend sa revanche sur le Taureau du Bronx en décembre 1949. Hélas, ce dernier avait refusé de mettre son titre mondial des moyens en jeu. L'année suivante, Villemain bat Kid Gavilan, mais s'incline à deux reprises devant l'immense Sugar Ray Robinson. Entre-temps, Bretonnel a la douleur de perdre un boxeur, le poids coq Mustapha Mustaphaoui, victime d'une congestion cérébrale des suites d'un combat.

Lorsque Villemain décide de mettre un terme à sa carrière, en 1952, l'entraîneur parisien s'intéresse au Normand Pierre Langlois. C'est à ses cotés qu'il entame une seconde carrière aux Etats-Unis. Jean Bretonnel s'y installe pendant une dizaine de mois avec femme et enfants et laisse la direction de sa salle à Philippe Philippi. Dix boxeurs le suivent. Parmi eux, Jacques Royer-Crécy, Hocine Khalfi et Pierre Langlois lui offre l'une de ses plus beaux coups d'éclat. Son «triple américain» réalisé entre le 14 et 29 mai 1954, respectivement face à Ralph Tiger Jones, Sandy Saddler et Joey Giardello. Il ne connaît pas en revanche le sacre mondial lors du son premier championnat du monde. Pierre Langlois s'incline sur blessure (11e round) face à Carl Bobo Olson, champion du monde des moyens, le 15 décembre 1954 à San Francisco.

De retour à Paris, Jean Bretonnel accueille Marcel Pigou et Germinal Ballarin dans son équipe et héberge Laszlo Papp. Son écurie grossit avec l'arrivée des Antillais Théo et Fernand Nollet, Antoine Martin et François Pavilla. Puis, c'est le temps des Nordistes avec les frères Warusfel, Ildefonse, Jean-Claude et Georges. Roger Zami et Jean-Baptiste Rolland deviennent ensuite ses élèves, avant un certain Jean-Claude Bouttier. Le Mayennais lui offre le titre européen des moyens, mais échoue à deux reprises, face à l'Argentin Carlos Monzon, pour la ceinture mondial. Jean Bretonnel découvre le Basque Jean Mattéo et lance les carrières de Louis Acaries et Pierre Joly. En mars 1987, il est dans le coin de Saïd Skouma qui lui offre une dernière chance de décrocher une ceinture mondiale, le seul trophée qui manquera à jamais à son palmarès. Avec Michel Boivin, il ouvre la salle parisienne du 1er et 2e. Une dernière initiative avant de s'éteindre le 14 février 1990 à l'âge de 80 ans.
