Jimmy Wilde

Recognized by many as the greatest flyweight of history, the Welshman has held the world title for seven years. After learning the boxing tents of fights where he has delivered more than seven hundred confrontations, Wilde ruled that a class has given credibility to the United States. Often opposed to heavier men, it made the difference with its punch and impressive activity in a ring.
Created before the First World War in Britain, the category of flies (108 pounds, 50.802 kilograms) will quickly capture the attention thanks to the personality of its champions. The Welshman Jimmy Wilde was particularly one that allows this weight class to steal the limelight from some heavy thought to be so untouchable. Even today it is often considered the biggest fly in history. Unbeaten in his first 98 fights, world champion for seven years, Britain had a devastating punch that allowed him to abrégrer 99 of his 145 fights.
He was born May 15, 1892 in Pontypridd. He is 12 years old when her family moves to Tylorstown where Jimmy started his working life in the coal mines. This work

He then began a series of victories that will make him the champion of legend. His notable successes included a KO in the 18th round against Billy Padden for the British title of flies, a KO in the sixth against the French Eugene Husson and victories at Sid Smith, the former world champion class, and Joe Symonds, holding the world title since his victory over Percy Jones, the Welsh first challenger for the world crown. Wilde is undefeated for four years, after 101 fights (three of Exhibitions).
Yet one must bow first, 25 January 1915, at Tancy Lee, for British and European titles flies. In his defense, Wilde had been ill just before the
combat, it is close to exhaustion when his corner threw in the towel in the 17th recovery. A gesture that he asked his corner never to repeat under any circumstances. After four months of rest, the Welshman found the pace of success. It is then ready to challenge Joe Symonds, world title Thurs, February 14, 1916. The champion is in the 12th round KO Wilde and world champion. It must however beat Young Zulu Kid ten months later in London (11th KO) to be recognized as a defending champion. He defended his belt four times (before the limit) before the outbreak of the First World War. Drill sergeant at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, he leaves aside his career lasted only seven fights in two years.
It is up to the front of the stage by dominating Joe Lynch, the future world champion bantamweight, in March 1919. Wilde then undertook a tour of six months in the United States finally recognize that the category of flies. He was the only European champions. Eleven successful almost make you forget Jack Dempsey Americans dazzled by the power of the fragile Welsh called "the little atom" (the mighty atom). The world heavyweight champion Gene Tunney would later say, "Wilde is the greatest boxer I've seen."

In 1921, aged 29, Jimmy Wilde fought hundreds of opponents for most major and holds the world title in four years. He must then conceded their third defeat in January 1921 for its 128th Combat (stopping the arb. 17th) against Peter Herman, the former world champion roosters, five pounds heavier.
The accumulation of fighting began to weigh on the brilliant Welsh boxer who decides to retire. But it only lasts two years. Attracted by a major award (13,000 pounds), Wilde is back to defend his world title against the Filipino Pancho Villa. The fight takes place at the Polo Ground in New York June 18, 1923.
At 31, Jimmy Wilde is facing an opponent youngest of nine, and hard puncher. An incident disrupts the fight. At the end of the second round, Wilde set to join Villa when his corner sent him a terrible blow to the jaw after the gong. The British did not recover. Despite his bravery, Wilde, eye injury, suffered an unbearable punishment of Villa. Wilde collapses after 1'46''in the seventh round before being transported urgently to the hospital. This fight is the last of the fallen champion. After 145 combat official, he laments a third failure.

Elected first president of the National Union of boxers named to Hall of Fame in 1959, following the evolution of the discipline until his last breath. On March 10, 1969, Jimmy Wilde will turn off at the age of 77 years at the Cardiff hospital from injuries caused by aggression a year ago in a railway station. A tragic end for this little guy that still leaves an indelible mark.

Invaincu lors de ses 98 premiers combats, champion du monde durant sept ans, le Britannique avait un punch dévastateur qui lui a permis d'abrégrer 99 de ses 145 combats.
Il voit le jour le 15 mai 1892 à Pontypridd. Il a 12 ans lorsque sa famille se déplace à Tylorstown où Jimmy commence sa vie active dans les mines de charbon. Ce travail

A l'époque, ces toiles de tente abritent un ring qui offre à quiconque la possibilité de se mesurer à un adversaire. Wilde est un assidu. Il y aurait livré 719 affrontements face à des opposants souvent plus lourds que lui. Il aurait même combattu 25 adversaires le même jour !

Sa réputation n'est plus à prouver au Pays de Galles. Wilde épouse Elizabeth Ann Davies, qui sera parfois... son sparring-partner, et livre son premier combat professionnel contre Les Williams en trois rounds sans décision. combat, il est proche de l'épuisement lorsque son coin jette l'éponge dans la 17e reprise. Un geste qu'il demande à son coin de ne jamais rééditer dans n'importe quelle circonstance. Après quatre mois de repos, le Gallois retrouve son rythme de succès. Il est alors prêt à défier Joe Symonds, titre mondial en jeu, le 14 février 1916. Le champion est KO au 12e round et Wilde champion du monde. Il doit pourtant battre Young Zulu Kid dix mois plus tard à Londres (KO 11e) pour être reconnu en tant que tenant du titre. Il défend sa ceinture à quatre reprises (avant la limite) avant que n'éclate la première guerre mondiale. Sergent instructeur au Royal Military Collège de Sandhurst, il laisse de coté sa carrière ne disputant que sept combats en deux ans.
Il revient sur le devant de la scène en dominant Joe Lynch, le futur champion du monde des coqs, en mars 1919. Wilde entreprend alors une tournée de six mois aux Etats-Unis qui reconnaissent enfin la catégorie des mouches. Il est alors le seul Européen champions du monde. Ses onze succès font presque oublier Jack Dempsey aux Américains éblouïs par la puissance du frêle gallois baptisé «le petit atome» (the mighty atom). Le champion du monde des lourds Gene Tunney dira plus tard: «Wilde est le plus grand boxeur que j'ai vu».

En 1921, âgé de 29 ans, Jimmy Wilde a combattu des centaines d'adversaires plus grands pour la plupart et détient le titre mondial depuis quatre années. Il doit alors concédé sa troisième défaite en janvier 1921 pour son 128e combat (arrêt de l'arb. 17e) contre Peter Herman, l'ex-champion du monde des coqs, plus lourd de cinq kilos.
L'accumulation des combats commence à peser sur le brillant boxeur gallois qui décide de prendre sa retraite. Mais elle ne dure que deux années. Attiré par une bourse importante (13 000 livres), Wilde est de retour pour défendre son titre mondial contre le Philippin Pancho Villa. Le combat a lieu au Polo Ground de New York le 18 juin 1923.
A 31 ans, Jimmy Wilde doit faire face à un adversaire plus jeune de neuf ans, dur et puncheur. Un incident bouleverse le combat. A la fin du deuxième round, Wilde s'apprête à rejoindre son coin lorsque Villa lui adresse un terrible coup à la mâchoire après le gong. Le Britannique ne récupère pas. Malgré sa bravoure, Wilde, blessé à l'œil, subit une punition de Villa devenue insupportable. Wilde s'effondre après 1'46'' dans le 7e round avant d'être transporté de toute urgence à l'hopital. Ce combat est le dernier du champion déchu. Après 145 combat officiels, il déplore un troisième échec.

Elu premier président de l'Union Nationale des boxeurs, nommé au Hall of Fame en 1959, il suit l'évolution de sa discipline jusqu'à son dernier souffle. Le 10 mars 1969, Jimmy Wilde s'éteind à l'âge de 77 ans à l'hopital de Cardiff des suites de blessures occasionnées par une aggression un an plus tôt dans un gare. Une tragique fin pour ce petit bonhomme qui laisse aujourd'hui encore une empreinte indélébile.
