Unbeaten in his ninety first battles, he was crowned in three categories and remains to this day the man who played the most World Championships.

Celà passe par un duel «fratricide». Le 29 octobre 1988, Chavez retrouve son ami José Luis Ramirez à Las Vegas. Les deux opposants se sont côtoyés durant des années au sein de la même salle. L'affrontement tient toutes ses promesses, mais blessé, Ramirez est stoppé dans la 11e reprise.

Mené aux points au début du 12e round, Chavez renverse la vapeur à quatre secondes de la fin. Après chaque victoire, Chavez accueille d'interminables fêtes dans sa propriété. La bière qu'il aime tant coule à flot et les enfants de son quartier repartent avec des cadeaux. Il écrit d'autres grandes pages de sa carrière en battant aux points Hector Camacho, puis en remplissant le stade Azteque de Mexico (132 275 spectateurs) face à Greg Haugen (arrêt 5e).

Une dernière tournée d'adieu en 2005 et l'idole du Mexique tire sa révérence avec un prestigieux palmarès (107 victoires, 86 avant la limite, 2 nuls et 6 défaites).
