On September 29, 1973, in a ring installed in the middle of the central Roland Garros, the temple of tennis where three months earlier Elie Nastase won the International in France, Jean-Claude Bouttier tent, fifteen months after his first failure, Carlos Monzon dispossessed of his world title means.
It is also the dream of actor Alain Delon, who for the occasion, has been transformed with great passion in the shoes of a developer.
The first fight, a real event organized by Benaim and Michael at Colombes stadium, had created a popular enthusiasm that no action has been raised. A vested part of an exceptional media coverage. On the eve of the first act, all France was convinced that his "little guy" would win. Bouttier was spectacular success on Jo Gonzales, Lonnie Harris, Pascal Di Benedetto and Juan Carlos Duran for the European crown in June 1971.
But despite all his valor, the European champion was still a little tender and did not manage to bend the "Cobra Santa Fe." And despite a diffusion

television in deferred, all France knew the evening of June 17, 1972 that the heart "of the small" was not enough.

Present at ringside, Alain Delon, a friend of and fascinated by Bouttier Monzon, had been so touched by the bravery of the French as the unshakable assurance and savagery "machismo" of Argentine champion. In the locker room of the French, the public clamor announce the hour. Delon is for Bouttier: "Let's play Jean-Claude!" When it manages to break through the crowd and finally reaches the ring, this is a good ten minutes as Monzon expressed his impatience.
Less tense than during the first episode, Bouttier requires input a breakneck pace! The Argentinian used his superior reach and ease to use his support on the ropes to hold the energy dissipation of the challenger. C'est aussi le rêve de l'acteur Alain Delon, qui, pour l'occasion, s'est mué avec beaucoup de passion dans la peau d'un promoteur.
Le premier combat, un véritable événement organisé par Bénaïm et Michealis au stade de Colombes, avait engendré un engouement populaire qu’aucun combat n'a suscité depuis. Un intérêt né en partie d’une exceptionnelle couverture médiatique. A la veille de ce premier acte, toute la France était persuadée que "son petit gars" allait l’emporter. Bouttier restait sur des succès spectaculaires sur Jo Gonzales, Lonnie Harris, Pascal Di Benedetto et Juan Carlos Duran pour la couronne européenne en juin 1971.
Mais, malgré toute sa vaillance, le champion d’Europe était encore un peu tendre et n’allait pas réussir à faire plier le "Cobra de Santa Fé". Et, malgré une diffusion

télévisuelle en différée, toute la France savait au soir du 17 juin 1972 que le cœur "du petit" n’avait pas suffit.

Présent aux bord du ring, Alain Delon, ami de Bouttier et fasciné par Monzon, avait été autant touché par la bravoure du Français que par l’assurance inébranlable et la sauvagerie "machiste" du champion argentin. Bénaïm et Michéalis n'étant pas motivés pour "remettre le couvert", l'acteur décide d'organiser cette revanche. Grâce à un investissement financier personnel, il assure à la signature la garantie d’une bourse d’un million et demi de francs pour "El Macho".

Dans un premier temps moins enthousiaste, le public semble pessimiste sur les chances d’un exploit du Français. Mais, Delon use de tout son poids médiatique et une nouvelle espérance en Bouttier s’élève. Celui-ci a désormais suffisamment d’expérience, ce qui lui manqua le plus dans les moments difficiles du premier affrontement.
En outre, Delon "professionnel jusqu’au boutiste", analyse justement que Bouttier avait perdu trop d’influx lors de trop nombreuses sollicitations à l’approche d’une telle épreuve. Il transforme alors sa propriété de Douchy en camp d’entraînement totalement hermétique. Bouttier y effectue la totalité de sa préparation.

Entre-temps, pour quelques mots avec son entraîneur Amilcar Brusa, le champion a bien faillit arrêter la boxe, puis a donné quelques signes de déclin. Il vacille, proche du KO devant Benny Briscoe, "le robot de Philadelphie", en novembre 1972 à Buenos-Aires, et se trouve bien chanceux de conserver son titre devant l’éternel Emile Griffith, en juin à Monaco, alors que toute la presse l’avait
vu battu aux points. Ce soir là, face à un adversaire de 35 ans, que Bouttier avait battu six mois auparavant, sa boxe semble rouillée.
Fasciné par Monzon, mais privée de champion du monde depuis la défaite d’Alphonse Halimi en juillet 1959, la France se remet à vibrer pour cette revanche tant attendue...

Ce 29 septembre, l'automne ressemble à l'hiver à Paris. Une pluie fine et glacée ne décourage pourtant pas les 15 000 spectateurs présents au rendez-vous pour un nouveau combat en plein air où le froid rend les coups plus secs et le combat encore plus dur ! Accompagné de son manager Tito Lectoure, Monzon, emmitouflé et impassible, entre le premier dans l’arène.
Dans le vestiaire du Français, les clameurs du public annoncent l’heure. Delon s’adresse à Bouttier: "A toi de jouer Jean-Claude !" Lorsque celui-ci réussit à se frayer un passage dans la foule et atteint enfin le ring, cela fait dix bonnes minutes que Monzon manifeste son impatience.
Moins crispé que lors du premier épisode, Bouttier impose d'entrée un rythme infernal ! L’Argentin se sert de son allonge supérieure et de sa facilité à user de ses appuis sur les cordes du ring pour contenir la débauche d’énergie du challenger. Multipliant les accrochages, Monzon ne semble pas toujours pouvoir maîtriser la volonté de son chalenger qui avance sans cesse.
A la 9e reprise, puis dans la suivante, Bouttier touche nettement "El Macho". Celui-ci rompt le combat en permanence et se fait plusieurs fois contrer par les directs appuyés du Français. Bouttier,

qui a légèrement ralenti son rythme, mène aux points, l'exploit est au bout des quinze reprises ! Mais las, au 12e round, le champion réagit en fauve blessé et utilise tous les coups, même ceux interdits. A la sortie d'un break, un crochet atteint Jean-Claude derrière la tête. L'arbitre le compte !
Il se relève mais retourne deux fois à terre lors des derniers rounds, pour atteindre malgré tout le coup de gong du 15e round. La décision unanime donne la victoire à Monzon, le rêve est définitivement passé !
Bouttier n’invoque aucune excuse, sa performance face à l'un des plus grands champions de tous les temps reste impérissable. Souvent oublié par les spécialistes américains, Monzon reste l’un des cinq plus grands champions des poids moyens de l’histoire.
