On December 10, 1958, the Canadian hosts Archie Moore Yvon Durelle at the Montreal Forum with a single goal: to rob him of the belt world heavyweight as "The Old Mongoose" (the Old Mongoose) holds for six years and seven successful defense.

On this winter evening, it's 25 degrees below zero in the streets of Montreal. Inside the Forum, the temperature is barely above 10 degrees and 9,000 spectators shivering with cold. The wait is long, but nobody wants to leave his seat to attend the event of the evening. They do not yet know they are going to witness one of the greatest fights in history.
The December 10, 1958 could see the consecration of Yvon Durelle (29), which intends to add to his list (Commonwealth champion and

Canada) world title heavyweight. Nicknamed "The Fighting Fisherman", the fisherman from Baie-Sainte-Anne, New Brunswick, has an impressive force of nature. He played in 114 fights and has 81 victories, including 43 before the deadline.
But he has in front of him an extraordinary boxer. Archie Moore was 45 years and holds the world title in six years. He defended his belt seven times champion without much difficulty and has 173 victories in 203 battles, most before the deadline. Bettors give an advantage of four against a champion against this relative unknown who is known to do almost no trains. For Moore, the fight seems to be a formality.

But from the sound of the bell, Durelle launches an attack. He took advantage of the element of surprise to adjust a huge right hand to his opponent collapses on the floor of the ring, after fifty-eight seconds of combat. Stunned, the champion of Detroit still can get up. In his autobiography, Moore says now: "The first time he sent me to the mat, I thought" this guy can
really hit! "It was enough that a punch!" And it's not over.
Yvon Durelle increases its pressing to ship a second time his opponent to the ground. Moore gets up immediately, but Jack Sharkey, the former world heavyweight champion now will, on behalf "9" again moments later when a new right touch. En cette soirée d'hiver, il fait 25 degrés sous zéro dans les rues de Montréal. À l'intérieur du Forum, la température atteint à peine la barre des 10 degrés et les 9 000 spectateurs grelottent de froid. L'attente est longue, mais personne ne veut quitter son siège pour assister à l'événement de la soirée. Ils ne savent pas encore qu'ils vont être les témoins de l'un des plus grands combats de l'histoire.
Ce 10 décembre 1958 pourrait voir la consécration d'Yvon Durelle (29 ans), lequel entend bien ajouter à son palmarès (champion du Commonwealth et du

Mais il a face à lui un boxeur hors norme. Archie Moore a 45 ans et il est détenteur du titre mondial depuis six ans. Il a défendu à sept reprises sa ceinture de champion sans trop de difficulté et compte 173 victoires en 203 combats, la plupart avant la limite. Les parieurs donnent un avantage de quatre contre un au champion contre ce relatif inconnu dont on sait qu'il ne s'entraîne presque pas. Pour Moore, le combat semble être une formalité.

Mais dès le son de la cloche, Durelle se lance à l'attaque. Il profite de l'effet de surprise pour ajuster une énorme droite à son adversaire qui s'écroule sur le plancher du ring, après cinquante-huit secondes de combat. Sonné, le champion de Detroit parvient pourtant à se relever. Dans son autobiographie, Moore raconte ce moment: «La première fois qu'il m'a envoyé au tapis, je me suis dit "ce gars-là peut
vraiment frapper !" Il ne lui a suffi que d'un coup de poing !» Et ce n'est pas fini.
Yvon Durelle augmente son pressing pour expédier une deuxième fois son adversaire au sol. Moore se relève immédiatement, mais Jack Sharkey, l'ancien champion du monde des lourds devenu arbitre, le compte «9» une deuxième fois quelques instants plus tard lorsqu'une nouvelle droite le touche. Il reste une minute et Moore atteint le terme de cette reprise initiale par miracle, mais encore groggy. Si le règlement en vigueur avait été appliqué, Durelle aurait dû l'emporter pour trois knock-down dans la même reprise. Mais lors de ce combat, il avait été décidé de ne pas l'appliquer. Yvon Durelle en fut la victime.

Quatre rounds plus tard, Moore goûte une nouvelle fois au tapis avant la fin du round. Il trouve tout de même la force de provoquer l'entourage du Canadien, faisant jaillir sa fureur. On pense que la fin du tenant du titre est proche, mais le vieux chêne est toujours debout. Il semble même ressuscité dans la 7e reprise lorsqu'il envoie Yvon Durelle au tapis sur une puissante gauche.
Découragé devant l'incroyable résistance du boxeur aux tempes grisonnantes, qui enchaîne les combinaisons, et tout proche de l'épuisement, le Québequois n'a plus la force de lancer ses poings dévastateurs. Il tombe au sol au 10e round et est sauvé par le gong. Mais lors de la 38e seconde du 11e, après un deuxième voyage au tapis, il ne peut éviter le KO.
Moore sauve sa tête en enregistrant une 127e victoire avant la limite pour battre le record d'efficacité détenu depuis 25 ans par le poids lourd Young Stribbling.
La revanche, huit mois plus tard sur le même ring, tourne à la démonstration pour Archie Moore vainqueur en moins de neuf minutes. Malgré leurs terribles confrontations, les deux hommes entretiendront une pronfonde amitié.
Après un voyage de dix-sept heures pour se rendre aux obsèques d'Archie Moore, le 17 décembre 1998, Yvon Durelle a cette phrase en guise d'hommage: «Archie a été l'un des meilleurs hommes que j'ai rencontré». Le Canadien s'est à son tour éteint le 6 janvier dernier, à l'âge de 77 ans, d'un accident vasculaire cérébral.
