L’année 2011 se termine, même si elle nous aura apporté son lot de satisfactions en boxe, cet exercice ne restera pas comme un exceptionnel millésime. Combats quelquefois décevants et rendez vous manqués trop souvent au programme, il aura resté malgré tout de bien beaux champions qui nous auront donné l'occasion de vibrer lors de cet exercice passé. NetBoxe propose donc de revenir en douze actes sur les faits et les individus marquants de l’actualité pugilistique 2011.

Le boxeur de l'année
André Ward


L’américain est incontournable, le champion WBA des poids super-moyen rafle la mise en dominant Arthur Abraham en demi finale du tournoi Super Six au mois de Mai, puis il récidive en Décembre en finale devant le dur Anglais Carl Froch. Ward s’adjuge non seulement le tournoi mais il s’empare aussi du titre WBC du britannique. Le californien était quasi inconnu avant le tournoi de Showtime. Champion olympique des poids mi-lourds à Athènes en 2004, l’invaincu André Ward aura marqué les esprits en 2011, il semble avoir signé un long bail avec le succès, il est parti pour devenir l’une des locomotives mondiales de la boxe, dans la lignée des stars américaines du passé.

Le combat de l’année
André Berto vs Victor Ortiz


Le championnat WBC des poids welters entre l’Haitien André Berto et l’américain Victor Ortiz au mois d’Avril a atteint des sommets. Ce combat aurait pu se terminer en moins d’un round, au final il y en aura dix, tous fortement disputés. Quatre voyages au tapis au cours de ce championnat palpitant de bout en bout. Premier round : Les deux hommes se font face, Ortiz cueille Berto avec un crochet gauche au menton, l’haïtien accuse le coup et se réfugie dans un coin du ring où l’américain le frappe sous tous les angles, Berto pose un genou à terre et est compté, la fin semble proche…
Second round : Berto a récupéré, Ortiz est offensif, il veut capitaliser et accentuer rapidement son avantage de départ. Berto le touche pleine face avec sa droite et c’est au tour de l’américain d’être compté. La suite du combat ne sera que de cet acabit, à la sixième reprise les deux hommes s’éprouvent de nouveau et font tour à tour connaissance avec le tapis. Finalement Victor Ortiz inflige à Berto sa première défaite et s’empare de son titre WBC.

Le KO de l’année
Nonito Donnaire


Le KO de l’année revient incontestablement au philippin Nonito Donnaire pour son chef d’œuvre réussi aux dépens de Fernando Montiel lors du championnat WBC/WBO des poids coqs en Février à Las Végas. Nous sommes au deuxième round, les deux boxeurs sont au centre du ring et Montiel déclenche une large droite au visage du philippin, celui-ci le contre par un crochet large à la mâchoire. Montiel s’écroule de tout son long sur le ring. Pendant que l’arbitre le compte, son regard est hagard et ses membres inférieurs sont alors pris de spasmes. L’inconscience de Mr Mora qui renverra le mexicain au combat pour dix secondes et un crochet supplémentaire, fera que le verdict final sera mentionné comme un arrêt de l’arbitre mais personne ne s’y trompera, Montiel a bel et bien été électrocuté sur ce crochet gauche venu d’ailleurs.

La révélation de l’année

Le poids super-plume américain de vingt deux ans; quatre combats en 2011 et une montée en puissance jusqu’au titre WBO vacant décroché en trois petits rounds devant Vicente Martin Rodriguez. Une classe et un culot énorme pour celui qui se surnomme "The problem", le plus dur commence avec les défis qui ne manqueront pas de se présenter en 2012 au jeune prodige.

Espoir de l’année

Le jeune nippon a fait étalage d’un arsenal de coups rarement vu pour un homme possédant si peu de combats lors de sa dernière défense de titre en Aout devant le mexicain Juan Hernandez. Sa boxe en ligne ou l’efficacité de ses crochets en font un redoutable combattant. Ioka a conquis le titre mondial avec autorité devant l’expérimenté thailandais Oleydong Sithsamerchai en Février, titre défendu avec succès en Aout. Il remettait son bien en jeu ce 31 Décembre à Osaka, en une poignée de secondes le sort de l'invaincu thailandais Yodgoen Tor Chalermchaï est scellé; un crochet gauche envoyant Chalermchaï au pays des songes pour plus que le compte.

Le coup de cœur de l’année
Pacquiao – Marquez III

Surprise de l’année
Orlando Salido


Elle est causée par la victoire avant la limite du mexicain Orlando Salido sur le portoricain Juan Manuel Lopez pour le titre WBO des poids plumes de ce dernier au mois d’Avril. Lopez avait réalisé une année 2010 de feu, il s’était emparé du titre WBO dans sa nouvelle catégorie des poids plumes, un excitant combat contre la merveille Y.Gamboa se profilait pour "Juanma" et patatras Salido…Le mexicain qui avait déjà échoué par quatre fois pour un titre mondial, n’a pas laissé passer cette énième opportunité. Lopez lent, peu inspiré, par instants méconnaissable, n’a jamais été en mesure de résoudre l’équation posée par la marche en avant du mexicain. Pire au cinquiéme round, Lopez connait l’humiliation devant son public en se retrouvant expédié au tapis sur une droite de Salido. Lopez subissant totalement lors de la huitième reprise, l’arbitre l’arrête alors qu’il se trouve visiblement au bord de l’effondrement. Les deux hommes doivent se retrouver au mois de Mars, le résultat en dira long sur l’avenir de Juan Manuel Lopez.

Les flops de l’année
Combats tronqués
Le dénouement des combats impliquant les super stars américaines Floyd Mayweather et Bernard Hopkins. Mayweather qui met KO Ortiz en oubliant toute forme élémentaire de fair play, l’image déjà chancelante de "Money" en aura pris un sérieux coup. B.Hopkins lui se blesse au deuxième round d’un combat fort mal engagé devant son compatriote Chad Dawson, celui-ci est dans un premier temps déclaré vainqueur et champion WBC des poids mi-lourd, décision qui sera ensuite inversée. Que dire aussi des pointages portant à controverse sur les combats de Marquez – Pacquiao, ou encore du désastreux arbitrage de Mr R.Mora lors du premier combat entre Joseph Agbeko et Abner Mares pour le titre IBF des poids coqs? Ce sont malheureusement les principaux faits d'armes d’une année 2011 encore riche en décisions et arbitrages contestables.

La déception de l’année
W.Klitschko vs D.Haye


Le big choc au sommet chez les poids lourds ou la montagne accouche d'une souris. Le combat entre l’ukrainien Wladimir Klitschko et l’anglais David Haye fut incontestablement la grande déception de l’année 2011, 50.000 personnes à Hambourg, le combat retransmis dans plus de 150 pays en direct, l’engouement était pourtant présent, l’attente du public était énorme, la déception est à la hauteur. Haye avait promis de mettre fin à l’hégémonie de Wladimir, une fois arrivé sur le ring il est resté englué dans ses promesses d’avant match. Il ne s’est pratiquement pas livré, le combat débouchant sur douze reprises soporifiques où il ne s’est pratiquement rien passé. A oublier très vite.

Vol de l’année
Helenius vs Chisora


Le résultat du championnat d’Europe des poids lourds qui s’est déroulé le trois décembre dernier à Helsinki entre le finlandais Robert Helenius et le britannique Dereck Chisora fut scandaleux. Chisora très offensif et bien plus précis quoique manquant singulièrement de puissance aurait largement mérité la décision, l’anglais beaucoup plus actif donnait quatre coups quand le finlandais peinait à en délivrer un. Au final les juges optent pour une décision partagée (2 juges à 1) alors que la majorité a vu Chisora s’imposer d’au moins quatre points. Il est fort à parier que cette décision passe à la postérité et rejoigne dans les annales celle qui vit Roy Jones être privé du titre olympique à Séoul en 1988.

Le déclin de l’année
Sebastian Sylvester
L’allemand Sebastian Sylvester avait défendu victorieusement trois fois son titre IBF des poids moyens en 2010, cette année 2011 aura été celle de trop. L’autralien Daniel Geale l’a dépossédé de son bien au mois de Mai, le polonais G. Proska a enfoncé le clou en le battant avant la limite en octobre pour le titre de champion d’Europe. Avec le recul nous nous disons que Mehdi Bouadla aura malheureusement perdu une opportunité de décrocher un titre à sa portée quand Sylvester déclara forfait une semaine avant leur championnat.

Au revoir Joe


Impossible de terminer ce rapide survol de l'année écoulée sans avoir une immense pensée pour Joe Frazier. L'un des emblématiques champions du Monde des poids lourds des années "magiques" nous a quitté au mois de Novembre, nous laissant encore un peu plus orphelins de cette époque bénie pour la boxe. Smoking Joe s'en est allé, le souvenir de ses exploits sur le ring restera vivace dans l'esprit de tous les fans de boxe. Repose en paix Champion, nous ne t'oublierons jamais !
