Edwin Valero stopped DeMarco by ninth round stoppage(retired in corner)

It was a good win for Valero, but I am not convinced yet. DeMarco IMO was untested and though it was argubly Valero's best win, I think the two time champion is still untested.
But then again, who's left at lightweight to do this? Joan Guzman? Anthony Peterson? Everybody else moved up in weight. Ali Funeka is going for the IBF belt, Katsidis the wbo.

DeMarco didn't get hit too much until around mid-fight, but he didn't generate much offense of his own (which surprised me).

Valero went most of the fight with an extremely ugly cut to think about. He boxed very well. Even though his punches didn't have their customary "lights out" effect on DeMarco, he had clearly had enough by the end.

I thought it was an excellent performance put forth by Valero, before a national television audience, the man went into hostile territory, overcame adversity courtesy of the nasty cuts inflicted by misfortune, and broke down in virtuoso fashion an opponent running off a confidence-breeding streak of wins. I agree, the lightweight division now is probably in its weakest state in a long while, Valero potentially can reign for a long time, the most dangerous guy out there IMO is the Namibian Hitman Moses, but no promoter it seems is willing to take a gamble by marketing properly an unknown quantity. If Valero wants the career-defining fights, he'll most likely have to move up in weight again, just like Pacquiao.

Before/If Valero moves up I'd first like to see

Valero versus Katsidis...

Valero vs Moses...

Valero versus Guzman...

Valero vs Mitchell or Murray...

Four fights in the next 18 months at lightweight. If he wins all four he'd be in the books for sure. But if he rushes to move up to light-welterweight he will lose. He's not ready for the wealth of competition there. Even DeMarco landed many flush shots on Edwin... a guy like Bradley or Alexander or Khan, with their high work rates would pepper him from the outside all night to an easy win. Harder hitters like Urango, Maidana, or even Nate Campbell would be a closer fight... but I'd pick any of the three to beat Valero at this point. He desperately needs Freddie Roach to retrain him a la Pacquiao if he's going to move up right now.

Why on earth would he fight Mitchell or Murray? Mitchell hasnt done enough to warrant a fight and Murrays done nothing and probably wont ever get to that level. Guzman would be the best fight for Valero, hes wasted his career and looks done IMO and hes a big name.

Not so much because Mitchell or Murray have earned it, really...
But more so because it would be an exciting event on the England side of the pond... it would make Valero that much more internationally marketable... and if he fights Guzman and Katsidis, say, then he'll deserve an "easier" match-up like Mitchell or Murray.
Also I think he should fight one of them because it'll keep Valero at lightweight that much longer. And I really don't believe he'll make it at junior welterweight, at least at his current skill level.
I mean to say, who else could he fight besides those guys at lightweight I already listed? Course, I wouldn't say both Murray and Mitchell even if both keeps their record sterling... but one or the other - heck, why not?
Maybe the only other guys I'd put in there would be Juan Diaz or Juan Manuel Marquez, perhaps at a catch weight?

Good performance from Valero, he showed that he was more than a one dimensional slugger. Still could use some improvements though, I've always believed that a technically sound Valero would be a very tough guy to beat because the guy has a lot of natural talent.

Like everyone else, I was impressed by Valero that night. He showed a lot of grit and savvy to not only fight the majority of the bout with that gash on his head (and smaller one over his eye) but to keep his composure and not start to load up punches in hope of an early KO. He broke DeMarco down systematically and showed once again that he has great stamina even into the late rounds.

Despite that, he needs to get a new trainer. There are still massive holes in his skillset, from the wide angles he'll throw from to his open mouth and high-held chin. The guy's 28, so he needs to make the change soon in order to develop into the kind of fighter who can challenge the best of the Light Welter - or even Welter, since he's so adamant on fighting Pacquiao - dvision.

Arum did a bit of name dropping and suggested Bradley next. Shaws confirmed that he wanted it but Arum dropped out of negotiations and now hes calling for Lamont Peterson. Doubt either of them is an option tbh. Although Valero boxed well this fight his supposed punch power wasnt really evident. Demarco handled him and Demarco is a C/B- fighter. I'm thinking of Joel Julio and how he flopped when he made the step up. This guy has got a way to go before he can jump straight up to Bradley.

Yeah at first i did not like how he complained about the cut, but then i saw it was an elbow and i was ok then.
I like how he reacted to the adversity by being cut and did not panic and just rush in, imo he did a good job shutting down a fighter who had not been shut down like that before.
