Post Ezzard Charles (1921-1975)
he "Cincinnati Cobra" is often considered the greatest heavyweight in history. Yet in the premier class heavyweight he has made a name.
World champion between 1949 and 1951, Ezzard Charles, however, has never received the fervor of a public that was never forgiven his victory over the great Joe Louis.
Ezzard Charles discovered boxing in Cincinnati where he moved with his parents a few years after his birth, July 7, 1921 in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He learned the noble art in the gym of the city, a place that will mark his life. "It emanated from the place an atmosphere that attracted me, he told. I will never forget the first board I was given: If you want to be a boxer, you've got 24 hours of bright 24 with this desire. I followed this recommendation. I stayed a single, which was

content to do his best. "

The graduate school operates quickly qualities and serious, winning the title means to the Golden Gloves in 1939. Undefeated after 42 amateur fights, he turned professional at 19. His punch very quickly havoc by putting an end to 17 of its first 24 confrontations. Mounted in a light heavyweight, it dominates Archie Moore and Joey Maxim to settle among the elite of the category. His ability and his shot earned him the nickname "Cobra". February 20, 1948 Unfortunately, its venom is proving deadly for Sam Baroudi, one of his opponents.
Traumatized by the death, Ezzard Charles adopted a more defensive style and shows a reluctance to use his power. Its mobility is its greatest asset when landing in spite of a heavy weight of 84.5 kg. The withdrawal of the rings king Joe Louis in June 1949 offered him the chance to play the vacant heavyweight (NBA) for his 75th fight. On June 22, 1949 in Chicago, points it dominates Jersey Joe Walcott and retains
his world title eight times over the next two years. His fourth defense, which is also a reunion, contrasted with his idol Joe Louis, came out of retirement for a comeback unwise. Charles outweighs points, September 27, 1950 at Yankee Stadium in New York, but the public sulking success. Many would have preferred the "Brown Bomber" rise from the ashes.

It's a left hook from Jersey Joe Walcott who terminates his reign, July 18, 1951. Revenge, eleven months later, still running in favor of the champion. The defeat of the latter to Rocky Marciano Charles offers a new opportunity to be the first to use the title in the premier class. But he failed twice before the invincible Marciano, June and September 1954.

After two terrible battles, Charles will never be the same. Used, it loses even thirteen of his twenty-three latest releases. While he had reached nearly two million, he retired penniless, forced to wrestle and to lead a night club to feed her three children. "I defended myself well in boxing but in life, money flowed between my fingers," he later regretted.
His fall is dramatic when in 1966 he lost the use of his legs, and speech, as a result of multiple sclerosis who nailed in a wheelchair. A charity event is organized for him. Muhammad Ali, Archie Moore and Rocky Marciano wish to raise funds that receive care.

Ezzard Charles died on 27 May 1975 at the Veterans Hospital in Chicago, six days before his 54 years. Sometimes regarded as one of the finest stylists in ways never seen, even if he has experienced neither the glory nor the affection of the public, The Ring Magazine distinguished the "best heavyweight in history" . Marciano added, "Ezzard was not recognized on its own merits. I played the two toughest fights of my career in front of him. I really had to get the guts to deal with them."

Post Re: Ezzard Charles (1921-1975)
