Champion du monde des poids moyens en septembre 1948, le "Bombardier Marocain" a redonné le sourire à la France encore marquée par la seconde guerre mondiale. Ce succès obtenu devant Tony Zale couronne la carrière de ce champion hors norme, aussi gentil que puissant. Sa disparition a été vécue comme un drame national.
Marcel Cerdan était un talentueux jeune footballeur. Né le 22 juillet 1916 à Sidi Bel Abbes, c'est à Casablanca où sa famille a imigré en 1922, alors qu'il n'a que six ans, que le petit Marcel démontre de belles aptitudes balle au pied. Pourtant, son père Antoine, originaire du Rousillon, ne l'entend pas de cette oreille et l'oblige à suivre ses trois frères Armand, Antoine et Vincent chez Lucien Roupp. Ce dernier a aménagé une salle de boxe au-dessus de son garage, situé Quartier de Cuba.

Professionnel à 17 ans dans la catégorie des poids mouche, Marcel entame alors avec Roupp une fantastique carrière en Afrique du Nord tout d'abord, avec un titre de champion de France des welters,

puis dès ses débuts à Paris en octobre 1937. Wagram et le Vel d'hiv découvrent le punch de celui que l'on baptise le «Bombardier Marocain». Il signe par la suite de succès importants devant Cleto Locatelli (aux points), Humery (KO 6e), Alf Katter (KO 6e) et Kouidri pour la revanche, ceinture nationale en jeu (aux points).
Dès lors, et malgré une première défaite par disqualification devant Harry Craster, l'Europe lui tend les bras et c'est au Vigorelli de Milan, le 3 juin 1939, qui va pour défier le champion continental, Saverio Turiello. Le Transalpin est soutenu par 25 000 spectateurs dont de nombreuses chemises noires, mais il doit abandonner son titre des welters à Cerdan qui s'apprète à fêter ses 23 ans.

Lorsque la guerre éclate en juin 1939, le champion s'engage dans la marine alors qu'un championnat du monde face au grand Henry Armstrong était en passe d'être signé.
Après un an et demi d'inactivité, il revient sur les rings du Magreb. Il retrouve Paris occupé et fait subir un coma de 36 heures à Gustave Humery qu'il veille toute la nuit en pleurant.
C'est ensuite José Ferrer et son peignoir frappé de la croix gammée qui s'efface après 83 secondes et cinq voyages au tapis devant une foule de 16 000 spectateurs en délire au Vel' d'hiv'. Cerdan quitte la salle dans les instants qui suivent et ne reverra la France que trois ans plus tard. Il est de retour
avec sa jeune épouse Marinette, le titre champion inter-alliés des moyens, quinze victoires (dont treize avant la limite) et l'espoir de rattraper le temps perdu. En novembre 1945, il s'empare de la ceinture nationale des moyens détenue par Assane Diouf (KO 3e) qui deviendra son sparring-partner. Sa victoire aux points devant René Charron, six mois plus tard au Parc des Princes devant 37 000 spectateurs dont Marlène Dietrich et Jean Gabin, le convainc de s'exporter aux Etats-Unis où Jo Longman a établi des contacts. Ce dernier est le fondateur du cabaret "le Club des Cinq" où Cerdan rencontre Piaf. Pour ses débuts au Madison Square Garden de New York, le 6 décembre 1946, il est opposé à Georgie Abrams sous les yeux de Franck Sinatra. Le crooner voit tomber son compatriote au tapis pour la première fois de sa carrière et Cerdan s'imposer aux points. La puissance dégagée par ce torse velu fait merveille. Nouveau champion d'Europe des moyens depuis sa victoire sur le Belge Fouquet, il traverse de nouveau l'Atlantique pour battre Green, Walker et Raddik. Mais de retour en Europe, il perd aux points son titre européen devant Cyrille Delannoit le 23 mai 1948 au stade du Heyzel de Bruxelles. Sa main droite qui l'a toujours fait souffrir devient un soucis récurant qui ne l'empèche pas toutefois de reprendre son bien deux mois plus tard. Le championnat du monde contre Tony Zale est signé. Cerdan s'envole en compagnie d'Edith Piaf pour les Etats-Unis où l'attend le titre suprême. Au Roosewelt Stadium de Jersey City, Tony Zale, saoulé de coups, abandonne à l'appel de la 12e reprise.

A son retour, il descend les principales artères de la capitale debout dans une décapotable qui parvient difficilement à se frayer un chemin dans une marée humaine. Il est reçu à l'Elysée par Vincent Auriol et à l'honneur de ranimer la flamme du soldat inconnu. Jake LaMotta se présente comme son challenger officiel, alors que les noms de Robinson ou Belloise ont été évoqués. Lucien Roupp a décidé de mettre un terme à leur collaboration et Cerdan s'appuie désormais sur Longman et son frère Armand comme entraîneur. Le 16 juin 1949 à Detroit, Marcel ressent un terrible mal à l'épaule gauche après avoir glissé au sol en fin de 1re reprise. Il ne sait pas encore que ses ligaments sont déchirés et poursuit courageusement. Mais la douleur est si forte qu'il doit abandonner à l'appel du 10e round. C'est le dernier combat de sa carrière.
Le 28 octobre, le Constellation qui doit le porter jusqu'à New York pour la revanche contre LaMotta percute le Pic Rotondo aux Açores. Il n'y a aucun survivants parmi les 37 passages et 11 membres de l'équipage. Marcel Cerdan avait 33 ans. Un homme est mort. Un mythe est né.
