Barely 17 and a half years, the Puerto Rican became the youngest world champion in history by defeating Antonio Cervantes of Colombia, March 6, 1976. Early this artist, who is nicknamed "the bible of boxing", two other sets record by winning a second world title at age 20, then a third to 22 ½ years. Before making his professional debut at age 15, he fought already in the street at the age of 5 years.
It seems far too young. When faced with Antonio "Kid Pambele" Cervantes, March 6, 1976 in the ring of Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Wilfredo Benitez is a puny kid who almost did not even three hairs under the nose and seems just out of his mother's skirts.
Before him, the Colombian gives the impression of an indestructible champion with an impressive strike force that reinforces the ten successful defense of his WBA super-lightweight. Benitez was 14 when he captured the title in front of Alfonso Frazer, lying in the account after ten occasions. But the kid already has experience to make. 111 amateur fights and already 25 (including 20 before the limit) in business.

Born September 12, 1958 in the Bronx in New York, Wilfredo Benitez turns out to be a prodigy of rings. Long before the family returned home on the island in Puerto Rico, Gregorio, his volatile father arranges for him and his three brothers street fighting. Wilfredo has only five years and his first touch as his father tear dollars to passersby.
In San Juan, he went on a ring for the first time in eight years in Puerto Rico opening of Golden Gloves. This talented kid does not like boxing, but the practice to please his father.

For his professional debut in a few days before his 15th birthday, he spreads Hiram Santiago in a round. Maturity is enriched through the ranks that follow each other. He played nine in the first eight months of 1974, prior to his return to New York.
To step into the ring of Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden, he produced a fake birth certificate giving the legal age (18 years) to occur in the United States.

His victory in front of Cervantes and his three defenses before Villa won Tony Petronelli (whose brothers Goddy and Pat led Marvin Hagler) and Guerrero made him a revered champion in Puerto Rico. And now, Wilfredo enjoys his sport he practiced until coercion.

now nicknamed "El Bambino".
There is little time to put a federation unable to overcome. The WBA wrongly dismissed him as the victim of an accident, it can call into play his belt in a rematch against Cervantes. In this May 23, 1981, Benitez wrote a new chapter of history by winning a third world title in 22 years and 8 months.

Six months later, he dominated points Carlos Santos during the first world championship between two Puerto Ricans. Then it's time for Roberto Duran to give way, by unanimous decision. However, in December 1982, Thomas Hearns stops its ascent.
After this failure, it will not be the same. Mounted in a way to take up the challenge of adding a fourth title, it fails to Mustapha Hamsho at a semifinal World. A year later, he broke the ankle during the second round against Davey Moore. His late career is pathetic. He accumulated four losses in its last eleven performances and decided to hang up the gloves in September 1990. Therefore it is especially concerned about his health.
He was found comatose by his mother at his home in San Juan. Hospitalized in critical condition, Wilfredo Benitez suffered a traumatic encephalitis caused by the accumulation of blows. Her mother takes care of him and places it in a medical facility to get him the care he needs. Today, he can not speak or walk alone, and his memory is impaired. Benitez n'avait que 14 ans lorsqu'il s'est emparé du titre devant Alfonso Frazer, couché pour le compte après dix reprises. Mais le gamin a déjà une expérience à faire valoir. 111 combats amateurs et déjà 25 (dont 20 avant la limite) chez les professionnel.

Pour ses débuts en professionnel, quelques jours avant son 15e anniversaire, il étale Hiram Santiago en un round. Sa maturité s'enrichit au fil des combats qui s'enchaînent. Il en dispute neuf lors des huit premiers mois de l'année 1974, avant d'effectuer son retour à New York.
Pour monter sur le ring de Felt Forum du Madison Square Garden, il produit un faux extrait de naissance lui donnant l'âge légal (18 ans) pour se produire aux Etats-Unis.

Sa victoire devant Cervantes et ses trois défenses remportées devant Villa, Tony Petronelli (dont les frères Goddy et Pat ont entraîné Marvin Hagler) et Guerrero font de lui un champion adulé à Porto-Rico. Et désormais, Wilfredo apprécie son sport qu'il pratiquait jusqu'alors par contrainte.

Il n'y a guère alors qu'une fédération pour le mettre hors d'état de vaincre. Le WBA le destitue abusivement alors que, victime d'un accident de la route, il ne peut remet en jeu sa ceinture lors d'une revanche contre Cervantes. Ce coup d'arrêt l'incite à monter en welter. Malgré quelques succès guère concluants, Benitez peut défier Carlos Palomino, le champion WBC, le 14 janvier 1976 à San Juan.

Mais le suspense est entier. On le pense capable d'un coup d'éclat. C'est Leonard qui le réalise. Un crochet au flanc met un terme au combat à six secondes de la fin.
Cette première défaite n'atténue pas l'ardeur de Benitez. Il signe trois victoires convaincantes en neuf mois et s'attaque à Maurice Hope, tenant du titre WBC des super-welters. De retour au Caesars Palace, il mène cette fois largement au pointage et ajuste une droite qui cueille le Britannique. En ce 23 mai 1981, Benitez écrit un nouveau chapitre de l'histoire en décrochant un troisième sacre mondial à 22 ans et 8 mois.

Six mois plus tard, il domine aux points Carlos Santos, lors du premier championnat du monde entre deux Portoricains. Puis c'est au tour de Roberto Duran de s'effacer, par décision unanime. En revanche, en décembre 1982, Thomas Hearns stoppe son ascension.
Après cet échec, il ne sera plus le même. Monté en moyen pour tenter le pari d'additionner une quatrième titre, il échoue devant Mustapha Hamsho lors d'une demi-finale mondiale. Un an plus tard, il se brise la cheville lors du 2e round face à Davey Moore. Sa fin de carrière est pathétique. Il accumule quatre défaites lors de ses onze dernières prestations et décide de raccrocher les gants en septembre 1990. Dès lors c'est surtout sa santé qui inquiète.
Il est retrouvé dans le coma par sa mère dans sa maison de San Juan. Hospitalisé dans un état critique, Wilfredo Benitez est victime d'une encéphalite traumatique provoquée par l'accumulation des coups reçus. Sa mère prend soin de lui et le place dans un établissement médical afin qu'il obtienne les soins dont il a besoin. Aujourd'hui, il ne peut ni parler, ni marcher seul et sa mémoire est détériorée. Sans un sou après avoir dilapidé la totalité de ses gains (6 millions de dollars), il reçoit une aide de la Fondation qui porte son nom (*), après avoir perçu une pension mensuelle de 600 $ versée par l'état portoricain.
