In the slums of Al Chorillo in Panama City, the power of a punch is invaluable. Just 9 years old, Roberto Duran, born June 16, 1951, knows it. And the kid already learned to squat to enforce even when an adult comes to mess with him. Second in a family of nine children, he must leave school at 13 years to consume the small jobs (shoeshine, sinner or newsagent at the auction) to help his mother Clara abandoned by her husband. Three years later he attended a meeting of boxing in the ring and saw the kid pilferer to the generous temperament. A friendship was born. Duran performs a short passage in amateurs (13 wins in 16 fights), he turned professional in March 1967. He's only 16.

His early career is impressive and frightening aggression. "As soon as I get on a ring is to destroy my opponent," he loose with a dark look. The legend says that he has knocked out a horse of a punch found eighteen of his twenty first battles before the limit and remember the good memories of Carlos Eleta. Panama becomes the rich by investing his manager ... 300 dollars. He launched into the deep end by offering two renowned coaches, Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown.

His first appearance at Madison Square Garden takes only 66 seconds against Benny Huertas. For his second fight in the temple of New York, he entered the ring with the nickname "Manos de Piedra" (hands of stone). This June 26, 1972, it is the challenger of WBA lightweight world title held by Ken Buchanan. The gong of the 13th round, a left uppercut from the champion Duran folds. The score is slightly favorable to Leonard who did not refuse the fight, when in the eighth round, Duran raises an arm, turns back to his corner and makes a statement which remains engraved in the annals of the noble art, "No mas ! "a repetition that the Panamanian explained first by the stomach, but must be attributed to his fiery temperament.

Failure is the Panamanian cooking back home in anonymity. Two defeats Wilfredo Benitez points to, for the WBC super welterweight, and Kirkland Laing left hovering dark questions about the rest of his career. But he who will prove to be one of the greatest warriors of the ring puts things on points in stunning Pipino Cuevas (4th stop) before capturing the crown WBA super welterweight, the day of his 32 years, administering a terrible correction to Davey Moore (8th stop). "I am again Duran!" He claims. It then allows a challenge to Marvin Hagler, means unified champion, five months later at Caesars Palace. The bet he narrowly escapes (144-142, 146-145, 144-143). Then, on the same ring, Thomas Hearns, champion WBC super-welterweight, inflicting the first KO of his career (second). He needs 18 months to digest this failure.
The Panamanian, a follower of the nights of endless party, imposes the greatest punishment to his body. It sometimes borders quintal, but also knows how to win the toughest constraints on the weight again. The first months of his comeback are nothing impressive. But his rage is still miracles to Iran Barkley, February 24, 1989. Winner on points, he is world champion in a fourth category (WBC means) at the age of 37 years. Le Panaméen, adepte des nuits de fête sans fin, impose les plus grands supplices à son corps. Il frôle parfois le quintal, mais sait aussi s'imposer les plus dures contraintes pour refaire le poids. Les premiers mois de son come-back n'ont rien d'impressionnants. Mais sa rage fait encore des miracles devant Iran Barkley, le 24 février 1989. Vainqueur aux points, il est sacré champion du monde dans une quatrième catégorie (WBC des moyens) à l'âge de 37 ans. Pourtant, l'usure du temps se fait ressentir lors de la belle contre Leonard, titre WBC des super-moyens en jeu. Battu aux points, Duran connait des soucis d'argent. Il plonge une carrière qui s'éternise jusqu'en juillet 2001 où Hector Camacho lui inflige un 16e et dernier échec pour 103 victoires (70 avant la limite). Duran a vécu 33 ans sur le ring.
