Kid Gavilan
(1926-2003)

World champion welterweight between 1951 and 1954, the Cuban child's face to offset his lack of punch with a great speed and courage to all events.
Robinson helmed by the great, he waited his departure from the means to take power. Became a star in the United States is in the host country that ended his life.
His kindness was as gentle as his fists. It has made him an endearing character who has left his mark on the noble art in the 40 and 50. A true warrior of the ring, never defeated by KO, who ruled for over four years on the Welterweight category and would undoubtedly have appeared closer to his master Sugar Ray Robinson if he had lightning in his fists .
In 143 fights, the Cuban has signed 107 victories, but only 28 before the deadline. He was best known for its exceptional strength and chin.

Gerardo Gonzales, whose real name, was born January 6, 1926 at Gamaguey on the island of Cuba. The universe is made of kid's sugar cane fields where his parents wear Health

to bring low wages. Only nine years old, Gerardo is in turn required to the hard work to help the family. He met the cruelty of the foremen, it encourages parents to migrate to Havana where the life of a servant is not easy.

It is in the Cuban capital that the small Gerardo Gonzales discovered boxing, like many people his age. He made his professional debut at the age of 17, June 5, 1943 in Havana, beating his compatriot points Antonio Diaz. In his 14th fight in July 1945, he won the title of the Cuban light, but suffered his first defeat two months later before Carlos Malacara Mexico City, where he hopes to impose his talent.
But it is the United States that the Cuban boy began his true ascent. It is called Gavilan, Falcon Spanish.

It is a remarkable debut, 1 November 1946 at Madison Square Garden in New York, beating (KO 5th) Johnny Ryan. His aggressive style, its large size (1.79 m), his look and his famous bolo punch, he said he had created by cutting sugar cane, are important factors for a successful American dream. But competition is fierce and Gavilan must return to his country. Determined to make an impression on his return to the Stats, it adds the successes and enters the Top 10 for the welterweight Ring Magazine.
If failure to undergo three points against Ike Williams, Doug Ratford and Sugar Ray Robinson,
Cuban challenger named it for the world title. On July 11, 1949 at Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia, the teacher of the class keeps her crown (twice at 6 and 9 rounds 12-3). Gavilan is still living in the shadow of "Sugar" for two years until Robinson decided to climb through.

Meanwhile, Gavilan brought his career success against Rocky Castellani and Laurent Dauthuille, climbing temporarily with the means, but it also tilts to Robert Villemain. Beating Billy Graham, Tony Janiro, Joe Miceli and Paddy Young, the "Falcon" again opens the door to a world title.
While the NBA has awarded the belt to Johnny Bratton, the Committee of New York, the other agency awarding world championships, is associated with this project. May 18, 1951 at the Garden, Bratton is exceeded by the speed of the long arm of the Cuban raptor jaw is fractured at the beginning of the fight. At the time of the decision, there is no doubt that Gavilan is the new champion. He has just completed his 88th fight.

After a successful defense controversial three months later against Billy Graham, Kid Gavilan repels the onslaught of Bobby Dykes, Gil Turner, Billy Graham in Havana in October 1952, during the first fight televised in Europe, and Livio Minelli. He then put his title against Carmel Basilio. In the second round, Gavilan is knocked for the second time in his career, but he takes the decision on points.
Another challenge motivates him. The Carl Bobo Olson to challenge, holding the ring gear means. The battle is concluded April 2, 1954 at Chicago Stadium. To reach the limit it is presented at the weigh-dressed, but it does not weight the next day between the strings (141-147, 139-147 and 144-144).
For the eighth title defense of the welterweight, six months later in Philadelphia, Gavilan is deprived of his title by Johnny Saxton, Frankie Palermo's protege, the godfather of boxing. Nineteen twenty-one journalists at ringside saw yet win ... The contract for the hand will never be honored.
Kid Gavilan book twenty-six latest fighting which he accumulated fifteen defeats including a face Germinal Ballarin for the sole provision in Paris in March 1956. Back in his country, he hopes to spend quality time with his family by taking advantage of scholarships saved during his fifteen year career. But the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro initiated by upsetting his plans. Like many Cubans, he left his island and moved to Miami where he worked in the training camp of Muhammad Ali.
Victim of health problems, the Cuban spent the last eight years of his life in a facility in Hialeah, where he dies February 13, 2003, victim of a heart attack at age 77.
