On November 25, 1938, in the ring at Madison Square Garden in New York, Henry "Homicide" Armstrong is the first time to stake his world title against the Filipino Welterweight Ceferino Garcia, the inventor of the "Bolo Punch".
World champion simultaneously in three different categories (feather light welterweight), whom we nicknamed "perpetual motion" runs the risk of crossing the road to the Asian power.
A new appointment at Madison Square Garden, the temple of the noble art, for the young darling of the New York audience still under the spell of his recent exploits. Henry Armstrong became in the space of one year simultaneously undisputed champion in three weight classes: feather, lightweight and welterweight.

For his first defense of the welterweight title, Armstrong does not seek ease in accepting the challenge of Filipino Ceferino Garcia. A wonderful combination of punch and technical boxer, known for the efficiency of a sudden circular bottom to top (sort of hook semi - semi uppercut) named "Bolo Punch". The native of Barrio Caraycaray, fought for the

World Championship points by Barney Ross, remains on nine wins (including eight by knockout). When weighed, it is much more impressive than the champion.
Whatever, in the first round, the mass is said! Armstrong breaks the distance, sticks to his opponent in melee, head down and despite his size limited, he will advance. Garcia, however, known for its boxing and full fluid, highly effective, can not find his striking distance.
In the second round, the Filipino breaks in dry and finds himself cornered on the ropes. A powerful left hook to the U.S. then the right button violently.

No longer able to go down under the weight limit of feathers, "Hawk killer" forsake the world title. He successfully defended the title six times before returning to welterweight to lightweight to give a hand to Lou Ambers, 22 August 1939. After a bloody battle again, Ambers ends the series of 47 consecutive successful Arsmtrong to recover his property.

For his part, Garcia Ceferino mounted in average weight, became world champion (NYSAC) through a "Bolo Punch" Fred Apostoli on October 2, 1939 the 7th round. After a defense, Garcia accepts a rematch against Armstrong, as ways in. Le 25 novembre 1938, sur le ring du Madison Square Garden de New York, Henry "Homicide" Armstrong met pour la premier fois en jeu son titre mondial des poids welters face au Philippin Céferino Garcia, l’inventeur du "Bolo punch".
Champion du monde simultanément dans trois catégories différentes (plume, léger et welter), celui que l'on surnommait «le mouvement perpétuel» prend le risque de croiser la route du puissant Asiatique.
Un nouveau rendez-vous au Madison Square Garden, ce temple du noble art, pour la jeune coqueluche du public new-yorkais encore sous le charme de ses récents exploits. Henry Armstrong est devenu en l’espace d’une année champion incontesté simultanément dans trois catégories de poids: en plume, léger et welter.

Pour sa première défense du titre des welters, Armstrong ne cherche pas la facilité en acceptant le défi du Philippin Céferino Garcia. Un magnifique boxeur alliant punch et technique, réputé pour l’efficacité d’un coup circulaire du bas vers le haut (sorte de semi crochet - semi uppercut) nommé "Bolo punch". Le natif de Barrio Caraycaray, battu pour le

titre mondial aux points par Barney Ross, reste sur neuf victoires (dont 8 par KO). Lors de la pesée, il apparaît nettement plus imposant que le champion.
Qu’importe, dès le premier round, la messe est dite ! Armstrong casse la distance, se colle à son adversaire en corps à corps, tête penchée et malgré son gabarit limité, c’est lui qui avance. Garcia, pourtant connu pour sa boxe complète et fluide, très efficace, ne peut trouver sa distance de frappe.
Au 2e round, le Philippin rompt au pressing et se retrouve acculé dans les cordes. Un puissant crochet gauche de l’américain puis une droite le touche violemment.

Le challenger ne réussit toujours pas à s’organiser et subit sous tous les angles les attaques d’Armstrong. Tel un mécanisme remonté par une clé, le champion frappe comme un moulin à vent. Son dos large et ses jambes frêles lui donnent la stature idéale à cette boxe agressive. Toujours en action, Armstrong ne baisse toujours pas sa cadence infernale. Ce n’est ni un styliste, ni un puncheur, mais un ouragan en perpétuel mouvement qui ne cesse de rentrer, d’avancer pour imposer l’épreuve en corps à corps.

A la fin du 7e round, Armstrong touche avec plusieurs crochets droits puissants, Garcia chancelle... Quelle épreuve de force pour le Philippin asphyxié par ce rythme ! Les rounds défilent et voient Armstrong donner toujours trois fois plus de coups. La machine Armstrong est invulnérable. Déjà le 14e round, et inlassablement il ne cesse pas sa pression. Il frappe encore et encore... L’œil gauche gonflé de Garcia l’handicape et l’empêche de voir les courts crochets et uppercuts. Au 15e, il repart au combat, très éprouvé.
Comme s’il avait vieillit de 20 ans...
Toujours incapable d’utiliser son arme favorite par faute de distance, il ne peut boxer et se trouve à nouveau dans les cordes, se contentant comme tant d’autres adversaires, d’éviter les derniers coups d’Armstrong. Le verdict est unanime. Armstrong conserve son titre des welters.

Ne pouvant plus redescendre sous la limite des poids plumes, le "faucon meurtrier" abandonnera ce titre mondial. Il défendra victorieusement six fois le titre des welters avant de redescendre en poids légers pour accorder une revanche à Lou Ambers , le 22 août 1939. Au terme d’un nouveau combat sanglant, Ambers met fin à la série de 47 succès consécutifs d’Arsmtrong pour récupèrer son bien.

De son coté, Céférino Garcia monté chez les poids moyen, devient champion du monde (NYSAC) grâce à un «Bolo punch» sur Fred Apostoli le 2 octobre 1939 au 7e round. Après une défense, Garcia accepte une revanche face à Armstrong, titre des moyens en jeu. Au terme de 10 rounds durant lesquels la vivacité du champion des welters semble faire la différence, une décision controversée de match nul sanctionne la tentative de l’Américain de décrocher son quatrième titre mondial.
Deux mois plus tard, Garcia laisse son titre à Ken Overlin, vainqueur aux points. De son coté, lors de sa 19e défense en welters (en moins de deux ans !), Armstrong perd également aux points sa dernière couronne devant le vicieux et dur Croate Fritzie Zivic.

Si on parle des meilleurs boxeurs, toutes les époques et catégories confondues, il faut immédiatement citer ce boxeur magnifique, Henry Armstrong. Cette "dynamo humaine" qui attaquait tout le temps dans toutes les positions. Un boulimique du ring qui combattit tous les 15 jours. Un combattant très résistant et endurant, bon encaisseur qui soutenait une boxe agressive et intense grâce à un rythme cardiaque extrêmement bas. Son talent implacable pour la destruction et l’énorme volume de coups distribués en font une légende des rings.
Loin d’être resté dans l’ombre de l’immense Joe Louis, il réalisa un exploit inégalable de nos jours qui équivaut avec les poids intermédiaires d’aujourd’hui à détenir cinq titres unifiés dans cinq catégories différentes ! Boxeur de l’année en 1937 pour The Ring, il sera élu dès 1954, date de sa création, au "Hall of Fame".
