Le 29 octobre 1988, le Hilton de Las Vegas accueille la réunification mondiale pour le titre des poids légers. Ce combat offre une affiche fratricide entre les deux plus grands champions mexicains en exercice. Ce jour-là, Julio Cesar Chavez et José Luis Ramirez doivent mettre de coté leur amitié cultivée durant de longues années dans les salles d'entraînement.
Don King a contraint Louis Acaries, le manager de Ramirez, à accepter ce combat grâce à son influence sur le président de la fédération WBC, José Sulaiman, en faisant classer Chavez challenger officiel WBC de Ramirez, sans qu’il doive pour autant abandonner sa couronne WBA, fait unique dans l’histoire des différentes organisations mondiales.
Les bourses des boxeurs sont conséquentes : 750.000 $ pour Chavez et un million pour Ramirez.
En septembre 1984, Julio Cesar Chavez avait conquis son premier titre mondial WBC dans la catégorie des super-plumes, contre son compatriote Mario Martinez. Il le défendit brillamment à neuf reprises (notamment devant Ruben Castillo, Rocky Lockridge ou encore Juan Laporte), avant de monter chez les légers en novembre 1987 pour sa seconde couronne (WBA) devant le portoricain Edwin Rosario, acquise

au terme d’une lutte féroce de 11 rounds.
Agé de 26 ans et toujours invaincu en 59 combats dont 50 gagnés avant la limite, Chavez, idole vivante au Mexique, est le grand favori des Mexicains.
Malgré ce parcours impressionnant, il se présente ce soir là comme un débutant des rings au regard du palmarès de José Luis Ramirez, son aîné de trois ans. Ce dernier a débuté sa carrière professionnelle à 14 ans, et comptabilise 101 combats pour seulement 6 défaites !
Ces revers n’ont été concédés que face à des boxeurs d’exception tels qu’Alexis Arguello, Hector Camacho ou encore très jeune face à Ruben Olivares, le seul à l’avoir battu avant la limite ! Ramirez reste sur une victoire (quoique litigieuse), quelques mois plus tôt, à Paris, devant le surdoué Pernell Whitaker.

Même si les deux hommes ne proviennent pas de la même caste sociale, ce combat présente une véritable opposition entre frères naturels du ring. Les deux champions se sont côtoyés des années au sein du même gymnase, avant de s’exiler pour faire fructifier leurs talents à l’étranger. Ils n’ont pas oublié toutes ces années et les centaines de rounds d’entraînement livrés.
Pour certains spécialistes américains, ce choc ne peut qu’engendrer qu’un non combat à cause du respect mutuel et de l’amitié que se portent les deux hommes. Une ambiance particulière flotte sur le Hilton, mêlant excitation et angoisse, désir et scrupule. La conférence de presse reste très professionnelle, aucun mot déplacé, aucune provocation, mais pas non plus de profusion d’amitiés entre ces deux camarades. Ce qui les pousse même à s’éviter du regard.
Ramirez assez tendu durant les jours précédent l’événement, commençe pourtant le premier la guerre psychologique lors du choix des gants ! A la surprise générale, il exige des gants de marque… américaine. Etonnant connaissant la fierté des Mexicains. Mais ces gants plus rembourrés que les marques mexicaines seraient moins durs et secs à la frappe de Chavez !
Tout comme en conférence de presse, le face à face se déroule sans regard insistants. Enfin, comme un soulagement
pour les deux hommes, le combat peut débuter.
Dès le coup de gong, José Luis Ramirez plus petit (1,65 m contre 1,77 m) enclenche la marche en avant. Ramirez, gaucher, et Chavez, droitier, ont une boxe pratiquement identique basée sur un important défi physique. La boxe de Chavez plus souple et plus déliée, mais aussi plus rapide et puissante lui octroie la faveur du pointage des trois premiers rounds. Au quatrième round, la lutte devient encore plus prenante et engagée. Chavez par son travail à l’intérieur précis semble attendre la faute, lors d’une attaque de Ramirez, il place un contre du droit au menton … José Luis est secoué ! ses jambes vacillent, mais fier et solide, il n’accepte pas le tapis. Chavez si prompt à conclure ses combats d'habitude, ne semble pas accélérer, sans doute inconsciemment par respect… C’est même José Luis Ramirez qui termine mieux le round avec une gauche et deux splendides directs du droit que Mike Tyson apprécie au bord du ring.
Progressivement, Julio Cesar marque un peu plus sa domination technique par des contres magnifiques, des enchaînements corps face et surtout de très bonnes sorties de corps à corps en remise. Ramirez ne lâche pas et revient encore pour des échanges coups pour coups, en fin de septième round et de huitème round. Mais, impressionnant de facilité par des gestes techniques de classe, Chavez accentue son avance. L’incident tellement redouté lors d’une opposition de garde vient alors gâcher les débats : Cinquante et une secondes avant la fin du dixième round, les têtes des deux boxeurs se heurtent violemment, on entend un bruit sourd sur l’impact !
Ramirez est ouvert en haut du crâne et l’arbitre Richard Steele pénalise Chavez d’un point avant de se voir contraint d’arrêter le combat pour coup de tête involontaire. Une décision technique aux points est rendue, elle est unanime et sans équivoque (96-94, 95-93 et 98-91). Le nouveau champion réunifié des légers est Julio Cesar

Dix mois plus tard, Ramirez sera de nouveau défait, par Pernell Whitaker aux points lors de la revanche pour le titre WBC vacant et IBF des légers. Il se retirera après le combat suivant, battu aux points par l'Argentin Juan Martin Coggi en mars 1990, pour le titre WBA des super-légers, avec un palmarès de 111 combats (102 victoires et 9 défaites).

Lors de son combat suivant, Julio Cesar Chavez conquit une nouvelle ceinture mondiale dans une troisième catégorie de poids : celle des super-légers, face à Mayweather . Il conservera ce titre à douze reprises jusqu’au 29 janvier 1994, date à laquelle, il concédera sa première défaite face à l’américain Frankie Randall. Il échouera dans sa tentative au sein d’une quatrième catégorie (welters) en faisant match nul avec Pernell Whitaker en septembre 1993.
L’empereur Julio César Chavez se retirera en novembre 2001 au terme d'une carrière de lui aussi 111 combats (104 victoires, 5 défaites et 2 nuls).

On 29 October 1988, the Las Vegas Hilton hosts the reunion for the world lightweight title. This fight has a poster fratricide between the two largest Mexican champions in office. That day, Julio Cesar Chavez and Jose Luis Ramirez should put aside their friendship cultivated for many years in the training rooms.
Don King has forced Acarie Louis, Ramirez's manager, to accept this fight through its influence on the president of the federation WBC, Jose Sulaiman, by classifying the official WBC challenger Chavez Ramirez valid, without abandoning its WBA crown, unique in the history of the various global organizations.

Despite this impressive track record, it appears that night as a beginner in terms of rings of the charts of Jose Luis Ramirez, his elder by three years. The latter began his professional career at 14, 101 and accounts for only 6 defeats fighting!

In his next bout, Julio Cesar Chavez won a new belt in a third world weight category, that of super-light, facing Mayweather. It will retain the title twelve times until January 29, 1994, when he conceded his first defeat by American Frankie Randall. It will fail in his attempt in a fourth class (welterweight) by a draw with Pernell Whitaker in September 1993.
The emperor Julio Cesar Chavez will retire in November 2001 after a career of 111 fights, too (104 wins, 5 losses and 2 draws).
