Gomez - Zarate
Championship WBC super-bantamweight
Nothing fascinates the public more than a Puerto Rican struggle fueling antagonism with the Mexicans! On October 28, 1978, at Roberto Clemente Coliseum, Hato Rey, the poster is perfect: the Puerto Rican Wilfrido Gomez is opposed to the Mexican Carlos Zarate, for the tenth global confrontation between champions of the two countries.
This duel between "Bazooka" Gomez, terrible puncher than 22 years undefeated with 22 wins including 21 knockouts, and Carlos Zarate, 27, also undefeated with 52 wins, looks like the great verdict.
During the previous 24 months, neither country had succeeded in imposing its hegemony. Alfredo Escalera, another great champion of the island had risen to the challenges Mexican Sigfrido Rodriguez and Carlos Becerril, Samuel Serrano, and that of Mario Martinez. But the Mexicans Pipino Cuevas, Danny Red Lopez and especially Carlos Zarate had dominated their respective challengers Puerto Rican Angel Espada, Jose Torres and Andres Hernandez.
This duel between "Bazooka" Gomez, terrible puncher than 22 years undefeated with 22 wins including 21 knockouts, and Carlos Zarate, 27, also undefeated with

52 wins, promises to be the general verdict. For his fifth defense, Gomez, taking WBC super bantamweight since May 1977, brought its invincibility against one of the biggest hitters in the history of roosters.
The Mexican, taking WBC bantamweight since May 1976, successfully defended his crown eight times, including against Alfonso Zamora and Alberto Davila. To the shock created by Don King, he agreed to get into the top category to challenge Puerto Rican terror on his land.
Upon arrival of the boxers in the ring, the atmosphere in the Coliseum, typically South American, is indescribable. The ring feels the powder. While the recommendations of the referee, at odds with the total electric atmosphere, calm and impassive Zarate Gomez set very agitated, which skips constantly, eager to do battle.

Once the gong, Gomez, smaller, uses his mobility to avoid the extension of his opponent camped in the center of the ring. Combat is an obvious technical beauty. Already at the end of the first round, a left hook from Gomez inflames the public. During the following two occasions, the Mexican still ahead. Exchanges harden again. Brighter, Gomez also appears more powerful. Out of the direct axis formidable Zarate, he delivered by a series of precise and efficient sides. However, Zarate wants further tighten the battle and the bitter fight becomes a war.
Bazooka, hard puncher, looking for the decisive blow. Zarate, thanks
Boxing built a more complete and, as always press to start the resistance. The fourth round by the same tempo, when suddenly one against the left Gomez Zarate hit the chin. This is on the ropes!
Courageous, Zarate agrees the battle, standing before an audience wild. Violent hooks are exchanged and a short right again shook the Mexican. Send the other two hooks on the ground in the center of the ring. The bell saved the challenger in bad shape.
But Gomez's after him, from the beginning of recovery following, it touches every angle, the right is a terrible knees and Gomez Zarate, became wild, hitting the same ground.
The referee stops the fight. The "Bazooka" destroyed the invincible Mexico in less than five rounds. Carried in triumph to the cries of "Puerto Rico! Puerto Rico! "Gomez is the hero of a whole people. The ring then ignites and the police all the trouble in the world to contain a few fanatics draped in the colors Puerto Rican who want to do battle with the Mexican camp.
Eight months later, Zarate lost his title roosters against Lupe Pintor fellow on a contested decision. He failed in his new challenges face the super-bantamweight young guns Jeff Fenech and Daniel Zaragoza and ends his career in February 1988.
Wilfrido Gomez still retains WBC crown ten times, leaving him

in March 1983 for a rededication of feathers against Juan Laporte. In May 1985, he managed to conquer a new world belt (WBA) in a third category, super featherweight.
But like Zarate, while still undefeated, he knows the bitter taste of KO in August 1981, against the fabulous Salvador Sanchez.
He retired only in 1989 with a record of 44 wins (including 42 by knockout), three defeats and a draw. He remains a legend for his rings devastating punch with both hands. Classified as "the Ring" as the best super bantamweight in 1976, he chained in this category, 18 consecutive world championships victory by KO. A record.

Post Re: Gomez - Zarate Championship WBC super-bantamweight
Gomez - Zarate
