Champion à 17 ans 5 mois et 25 jours, Benitez affirme sa classe lors des deux défenses suivantes devant Emiliano Villa et Tony Petronelli. Pourtant sans ménagement, la WBA le destitue suite à son incapacité (à cause d’un accident de voiture) d’accorder à temps une revanche à Cervantès. du «bébé» Benitez au plus haut niveau, elle consacre dans les rangs amateurs un autre génie. Lors des jeux Olympiques de Montréal, le vainqueur de la catégorie des super-légers enchante des millions de téléspectateurs grâce à son instinctive virtuosité et son habilité. Son nom ? Ray Charles Leonard. Elu meilleur boxeur du tournoi, le jeune natif de Wilmongton (Caroline du Nord) se couvre d’or et se voit affubler d'un surnom de prestige, «Sugar», en référence à l’incomparable Ray Robinson.
Cependant, malgré les offres des divers managers et un palmarès amateur stupéfiant (seulement 5 défaites en 150 combats), Leonard ne souhaite pas devenir professionnel. Les circonstances le pousse pourtant à revoir sa décision. Afin d’aider à payer les soins de ses parents malades, à la condition modeste, le prodige devient pro.

Leonard totalise 25 victoires(dont 16 KO) en autant de sorties. Mais le plus dur reste à faire: devenir champion du monde. Si au cours de la conférence de presse, Leonard insiste sur ce challenge, Benitez contrarie l’enthousiasme avec assurance: "Je vais infliger à votre "chouchou" sa première défaite. Je suis la "bible de la boxe" ! Je maîtrise tous les styles à perfection et même s’il est plus âgé que moi, Leonard ne possède pas mon expérience. Nous sommes chez les professionnels et il va découvrir la vraie boxe !"
Si Benitez prédit l‘«enfer» à son adversaire, l’interminable échange de regards entre les deux hommes sur le ring donne le ton du défi. Pourtant, lors des deux premiers rounds très animés, Leonard domine largement les débats. Ses magnifiques jabs du gauche piquent régulièrement le tenant du titre qui, campé au centre du ring, semble un peu statique. A la fin de chaque reprise, les deux boxeurs se défient encore. Bénitez, tout sourire, semble le plus talentueux dans le registre de l’intimidation.
Leonard, prudent, ne s’enflamme pas. Il
récite sa boxe et suit les recommandations de son maître, Muhammad Ali, qui la vieille par téléphone lui a recommandé: «N’essaie pas d’étaler trop ta classe. Sois sobre et raisonné car les arbitres n’apprécient pas toujours la frime. Reste concentré !»
Dans le 3e round, Leonard reste le plus actif. Mais grâce à ses atouts défensifs (sa souplesse du haut du corps, ses retraits de buste et son travail des épaules), le Portoricain, tel un radar, évite quelques droites stupéfiantes de pureté. Les directs rapides et précis de l’Américain offrent un festival. Il enchaîne régulièrement avec des droites alors que Benitez se contente de boxer qu'avec son bras avant. Malin, Wilfredo refuse de s’engager. Pourtant, un superbe arrêt du gauche le contre et l’envoie au tapis. Nullement éprouvé, il se relève en souriant.

Dans les rounds suivants, la lutte devient encore plus animée. Benitez se sait en retard et, moins économe, il sort enfin sa droite. Alors qu’il possède un avantage d’allonge, c’est Leonard qui excelle à distance. Le champion a du mal à s’approcher à mi-distance où il semble plus efficace.
La bataille est sublime, un vrai récital technique sur les plans offensif et défensif. Un sommet de noble art entre deux pugilistes aux morphologies identiques (transfuges tous deux, des super-légers). Malgré leur âge, les deux possèdent un métier et un talent hors norme.
Au cours de la 6e reprise, un choc de têtes involontaire provoque une vilaine coupure au front du champion. Dans les rounds suivants, le sang coule et gène sa vue. Benitez descend sa garde afin de déstabiliser le «Golden Boy» par sa vista. Désormais, c’est Leonard qui avance. La guerre se durcit encore. Wilfredo accélère et varie sa boxe. Mais Leonard ne le laisse pas s’approcher

et se déplace parfaitement.
Aux 11 e et 12e round, dos contre les cordes, Benitez semble éprouvé. C’est un piège pour faire venir son adversaire à mi-distance. Mais «Sugar» ne commet pas l’erreur de se rapprocher. Patient, il délivre encore ses longs gauches.

Le 14e est un excellent round pour Benitez. Les trois ultimes minutes sont décisives. Même si Leonard est en tête au pointage, il garde l’initiative et accepte sans fuir la féroce rixe. Tête contre tête, gardes plus ouvertes, les deux hommes lâchent tout ! Le round devient furieux. Soudain un crochet gauche foudroie le sud-Américain qui tombe à genoux. Il remonte au décompte de 8, mais Ray l’ajuste de nouveaux coups et l’arbitre, Carlos Padilla, intervient pour le stopper à six secondes du terme. Leonard traverse le ring en sprintant. Monté sur les cordes, les bras tendus, Sugar Ray est champion du monde !
