D’un coté, la virtuosité de Walker Smith Jr (Ray Robinson), dont l’art du déplacement, des blocages et des remises ont illuminés les plus belles rampes du noble art. De l’autre, Jack LaMotta, l’idole du Bronx surnommé "Le Taureau Enragé". Un dur encaisseur, râblé et courageux. Un caïd élevé à l’école des rues du Lower East Side. Un vrai guerrier au tempérament bouillant qui montait sur les rings pour assouvir son agressivité et sa violence naturelle. Désormais en moyens, grâce à une puissance supérieure, ses fans croient à ses chances de renouveller l'exploit.

Depuis ses débuts professionnels, homme d’affaires avertit, LaMotta avait organisé ses propres réunions avec son frère (Joey) dans un cinéma dont il avait fait l’acquisition. Indépendant, cassant ainsi le circuit traditionnel des organisateurs et l’influence des mafieux qui font et défont la loi des rings, après s’être obstiné à repousser toutes les propositions malhonnêtes, LaMotta finit par y céder. Car malgré son classement dès 1943 dans les meilleurs mondiaux, ses 90 combats en neuf années ne suffissent pas à lui ouvrir une perspective pour le titre. «Comme aucun des challengers blancs ne veulent m’affronter et qu’eux même ne veulent pas affronter les meilleurs noirs. J’ai été obligé de les boxer tous. C’est comme ça que je me suis tapé cinq fois Robinson !» En novembre 1947, devant son public du Madison, il se laisse arrêté par l’obscur Billy Fox au 4e. En récompense, deux ans plus tard, enfin, le "Taureau" aura sa chance mondiale. Si LaMotta ne put résister au Mariage de déraison (unissant boxe et mafia) qui teinte cette époque, Robinson, grâce à sa classe, n’aura jamais à s'y consentir. Lors de la conférence de presse, les relations entre les deux opposants sont des plus tendues. Fatigué d'entendre vanter le génie de Sugar, LaMotta avertit avec colère: «Nous ne sommes plus en welters. Cessez de rappeler nos combats précédents comme des évidences. Je lui promets la pire nuit de douleur ! Je l’ai déjà battu et je finirai ce travail !» Ray, souriant aux provocations du champion, se veut confiant à tel point qu’il a déjà signé une garantie de 75 000 dollars pour son prochain défi: un défi au champion des mi-lourds, Joey Maxim. Mais personne n'est dupe, une victoire de LaMotta lui permettrait de bénéficier
de cette échéance. «Mettez les dollars et je combats n’importe qui, champion du monde des lourds compris !»
Robinson connaît cette "bête" par coeur. Elle devient féroce au fil des rounds; intraitable... Même si Sugar sait a qu’il ne peut pas espérer que ce combat se finisse tôt, sa stratégie sera d’imposer un rythme infernal dès les trois premiers rounds pour pousser LaMotta à être en surrégime.

Mais dès le coup de gong, c'est le tenant du titre qui se jette sur lui. Le Taureau est lâché ! Sa violence et sa brutalité dérèglent la science de Robinson. Ses rushs furieux, parfois désordonnés, enflamment les 14 000 supporters présents dans le Stadium. Le terrifiant travail au corps de l'Italo-américain coupe son adversaire en deux. De vicieux crochets gauches secouent Robinson à la fin du 3e round. Jake coince son rival dans un coin, qui, fin et élancé, n’arrive pas à le tenir à distance. LaMotta domine les cinq premiers rounds. Ses coups ouvrent le nez et la lèvre supérieure du challenger. Au 6e, tout le monde est unanime: Le Taureau du Bronx va infliger à Sugar Ray sa première défaite depuis huit ans. Mais LaMotta a vieillit. A 30 ans, il en parait dix de plus. Son style de battant sans concession l’a usé. Mais aussi, ses gros efforts et ses intenses privations pour perdre 8 kilos les semaines précédant l’affrontement diminuent son endurance. Le 7e round marque un changement: Robinson prend l’ascendant. Il use de ses parfaits uppercuts pour stopper l’ouragan. Sa gamme de coups est impressionnante. Sa vitesse, son coup d’œil et sa facilité gestuelle font merveille. Les coups brouillons du "Raging Bull" sont trop imprécis pour contrarier le danseur qui pilonne en directs. Mais, en sang, Jake continue sa chasse. Sa résistance phénoménale et sa farouche volonté de vaincre le fait surmonter la souffrance des coups encaissés. Ses attaques fougueuses deviennent de plus en plus imparfaites. Pommettes et arcades enflées, la fatigue envahit son corps au fil des minutes.

Lors des rounds suivants, le challenger réussit l’une des plus éclatantes démonstrations de boxe. De superbes combinaisons fusent de partout. La précision des poings qui martèle le visage de LaMotta est diabolique. Ray enchaîne et accélère encore. Au 10e round, il entend le New-Yorkais lui marmonner: «Tu n’y arriveras pas, tu ne m’enverras pas au tapis !» Le courage de La Motta, comme la boxe de Sugar semble irréel ! Secoué, ballotté, ivre de coups, Jake ne veut pas tomber. Grimant de douleur, il avance toujours. Et au début du 11e, il rassemble toutes ses ressources pour coincer Robinson dans un coin. Mais, le visage tuméfié, LaMotta est en train de jouer sa vie, inconscient, si proche de la mort. Dos aux cordes, il provoque encore son adversaire.

que l’arbitre abrège l’affrontement. Au 13e, le combat devient inhumain ! Vickie, en pleurs, s’est tourné dos au ring, ne pouvant plus assisté au calvaire. Robinson frappe LaMotta qui n’est plus qu’une cible trop facile. Jake ne se défend plus mais il ne tombe pas ! 56 coups le touchent de plein fouet, sans réponse. L’arbitre Franck Sykora stoppe le «massacre». Ray Sugar Robinson est le nouveau champion des moyens.
Epuisé, ce dernier peut à peine soulever les bras au ciel. Pourtant, Ray entre dans l’histoire. Il devient le quatrième à conquérir les prestigieux titres dans ses deux divisions. Assis sur son tabouret, son peignoir léopard sur les épaules, LaMotta ne demande aucune aide. Il défi encore son rival: «Tu ne m’as pas fait mal. Tu m’as arraché mon titre, mais tu ne m’auras jamais mis au tapis.» Dans le vestiaire, il restera une heure et demi sous oxygène.

Le lendemain de ce classique d’une violence inhumaine, qui illustre parfaitement l’image que véhicule ce sport entre fascination et répulsion, si captivant et écoeurant à la fois, l’Indianapolis News titre à sa Une: «Le Massacre de la Saint-Valentin !» en réference au 14 février 1929, lorsque les hommes d’Al Caponne avaient éliminé sept caïds de la bande rivale de G.
