World heavyweight championship
First round

The world heavyweight champion faces the Argentine bull in the defense of his world heavyweight title, September 14, 1923 at the Polo Grounds in New York.
Jack Dempsey comes free from a historic first round before retaining his title in the next recovery. This round will help establish the rule of the neutral corner.
World champion heavyweight since his victory over his compatriot Jeff Willard, July 4, 1919, and idol in his country, American Jack Dempsey wrote a new chapter in his legend, 14 September 1923 at the Polo Grounds in New York .

Tex Rickard, the promoter, requires it to confront Luis Angel Firpo, which he called "the Bull of the Pampas." The Argentine is 1.90 m and weighs 98 kg when it comes against the world champion, lighter (87 kg), before 82,000 spectators. And the shock is explosive!

The unthinkable happens after only thirty seconds of combat. Dempsey is driven between the strings. "When he touched me on the chin and I came across the ring, I thought that the time had come for the defeat," confessed the day after Jack Dempsey fight. But it goes on
the ring with the help of journalists without which there would surely have lost his title. "When I found myself in the ring, I thought there auvais twenty Firpo in front of me." His response was phenomenal, however. It sends the South American ground seven times before undergoing a new knock-down at the end of round. The recovery remains as one of the most violent in the history of boxing.

It will encourage the officials of the commission from New York to establish the rule of the neutral corner. The boxer from his opponent to knock-down will now have to wait pending a sign of recovery of the referee.

During the minute of rest, Dr. Kearns, coach of defending champion, jumped into the ring and shouted to his protege: "Jack finished it, and quickly". From the bell, Dempsey is more than ever unleashed and Firpo makes weapons after 57 seconds and three trips to the mat on left hooks.
"I won this fight by KO, as I hope, will tell the great Jack. But I must say that I never knew a difficult moment in my career."

Dempsey - Firpo
Championnat du monde des lourds
1er round
