THERE IS A 22 YEAR: JACQUOT - CURRY

The craftsman against the Cobra.
Born in Toul in 1961, Rene Jacquot, sincere man
and moved right near Grenoble in 1984 following a
Gerard Teysseron proposal that offered him a contract with a
HLM studio as home and a job as a delivery driver part time. Its
professional debut does not suggest a better
out.

Between 1983 and 1986, he conceded and only 8 losses
13 success. But the Gallic mustache becomes the Broken Nose
in April 1987 national champion at Yvon Segor who had beaten the year
before. In that year, he was
given a chance to Luigi Minchillo European, former challenger
World Hearns and Mac Callum. His victory over the experienced
Alpine passes unnoticed, however. But his fabulous destiny switch
probably there. It keeps well twice before
Taton and Eric Erwin Heiber before the deadline.

If these victories unknown impress anyone, she
can acquire a bar restaurant in Grenoble, is the
end of his galley years. He acquired the same recognition

17 years after his first fight against Monzon, relives Bouttier

Rene Jacquot has seized the opportunity of his life with great clarity,
Building on its strength. He knew how to mentally prepare
to beat an opponent best boxer but had won everything
and was no longer in the skin of a boxer can tap into

IL Y A 22 ANS : JACQUOT - CURRY

L’artisan face au Cobra.
Né à Toul en 1961, René Jacquot, homme sincère
et droit s’installe prés de Grenoble en 1984 suite à une
proposition de Gérard Teysseron qui lui offre un contrat, avec un
studio en HLM comme logis et un boulot de livreur à mi-temps. Ses
débuts professionnels ne laissent pas présager d’un meilleur
sort.

Entre 1983 et 1986, il concède 8 défaites et seulement
13 succès. Mais le gaulois moustachu au nez cassé devient
en avril 1987 champion national devant Yvon Segor qui l’avait battu l’année
précédente. En cette même année, il se voit
accorder une chance européenne devant Luigi Minchillo, ancien challenger
mondial de Mac Callum et Hearns. Sa victoire sur l’expérimenté
transalpin passe pourtant inaperçu. Mais son fabuleux destin bascule
sans doute là. Il conserve son bien à deux reprises devant
Eric Taton puis Erwin Heiber avant la limite.

Si ces victoires sur des inconnus n’impressionnent personne, elles lui
permettent d’acquérir un bar restaurant à Meylan, c'est la
fin de ses années galère. Il acquiert même la reconnaissance
(à Rome !) en dominant le jeune gitan invaincu Casamonica aux points.
Dans cette même ville, trois mois auparavant, l’autre champion
italien de la catégorie, Gianfranco Rosi avait été
laminé pour le titre mondial ; mis au sol à 6 reprises et
contraint à l’abandon à l’appel du 10ème par
l’étoile américaine Don Curry dont l’allure et le talent
poussent sa comparaison au grand Léonard.
Champion dès ses 22 ans et chouchou des abonnés de Canal
+ lorsqu’en welters, il avait unifié le titre, Curry avait été
élu deux ans plus tôt le meilleur boxeur du moment toutes
catégories confondues. Un terrible puncheur aux impitoyables morsures
(25 KO en 31 victoires) qui malgré ses deux défaites avant
la limite des gants d’Honeyghan puis de Mac Callum en super-welter appartient
toujours au gotha mondial. Un tel fossé le sépare du français
que seul un « fou » peut rêver d’opposer ses deux univers.

Et Bouttier insista
Persuadé que les capacités du français sèmeront
le doute dans l’esprit de la star, Jean-Claude Bouttier s’entretient avec
le manager de Curry : Bob Arum avec qui il a des relations privilégiées.
Il lui propose puis insiste pour que son poulain vienne défendre
sa nouvelle ceinture en France devant le champion d’Europe.
Curry et Jacquot débarquent fin janvier à l’hôtel
Méridien Montparnasse à Paris où une salle de boxe
est aménagée dans le salon. Tous les entraînements
sont publics. Le texan joue la star et impressionne de facilité
la presse sur le carré réellement magique par sa grâce…
Mais l’approche mentale du rendez vous par le français est parfaite
! Il croit en sa chance dur comme fer !
Le prestige de Curry transforme l’affiche en événement
et lors de la conférence de presse : Curry pique : "Pourquoi
rêves tu de me rencontrer depuis deux ans ? Tu ne peux pas me vaincre."
Mais la réponse de René scelle sa motivation : "Ce n’est
pas possible que tu es autant envie de garder ton titre, que moi de te
le prendre !".

Tenir les six premiers
A la montée sur le ring dans son peignoir blanc et or, Curry
est magnifique. René avec humour a brodé sur le sein un perroquet
agressif en réponse au légendaire Cobra de son adversaire.
L’ambiance est électrique ! les "Allez René, Allez René"
donnent des frissons.
Le visage baissé lors du face à face, Jacquot n’a pas
besoin de défier Curry pour aborder le combat de sa vie.
Pas trop contracté, il n’est pas détendu pour autant.
Dès le début de l’assaut, l’allure élégante
et mobile du champion et sa rapidité d’exécution prouvent
l’écart de classe entre les deux hommes. Mais la prudente garde
et les déplacements latéraux du français lui permettent
de réussir un premier round prometteur.
Lors des deux suivants, le texan gaucher naturel inversé, délivre
quelques gauches stupéfiantes. Mais le lorrain encaisse sans brocher.
Sa boxe à l’intérieur lui permet de répliquer par
des uppercuts droits qui sanctionnent la tendance à baisser la tête
de Curry en corps à corps. Alors qu’on aurait pu penser le contraire,
Curry avance et travaille au corps afin de faire baisser la garde.
René n’abdique pas et réplique courageusement aux coups tranchants
du champion. "Ne le laisse pas s’installer devant toi. Continue
ce travail de déplacement. Sois vigilent, un petit pas de retrait
et tu reviens" lui rappelle Jacques Dufresney dans son coin.
La tactique est claire et fonctionne parfaitement car au 4ème,
Jacquot est toujours là, et même s’il est touché de
plein fouet, il résiste. Tout est exploité chez l’américain,
très souple du buste, il esquive et contre. René est touché
à nouveau durement en fin de round. A la mi combat, aucun doute,
Curry mène de deux ou trois points.

Et Curry, asphyxié craque
Mais le challenger revient déterminé à durcir
l’affrontement à partir du 6ème. Il délivre enfin
quelques superbes directs qu’il n’avait pas osé employer par appréhension
d’être piqué par le Cobra en réponse. Et soudain, une
lourde droite du français touche. Jacquot se colle à son
adversaire et utilise ses uppercuts droits enchaînés de courts
crochets gauches. La salle gronde de plaisir. Au bord
du ring, Bouttier a compris : "René durcit le combat ! il fait
douter Curry mais il ne faut pas qu’il prenne trop de risques. Il a raison
de se lancer maintenant dans la bagarre. Il saisit sa chance". En quelques
minutes, l’espoir du français remplace la certitude de l’américain.
Bientôt le cobra ne lâche plus autant de venin et s’éteint
même dans les rounds suivants. En l’espace d’un round, le combat
bascule : devant tant de vitalité et de volonté, le champion
doute.

René réussit à dérégler la boxe
du Cobra dans le 8 ème et 9ème. Il est l’antithèse
de Curry par excellence, lui ne gamberge pas, et solide au mal, prêt
à crever sur le ring, c’est l’heure de vérité entre
les deux hommes.
Curry ne fait illusion que les 30 premières secondes des rounds,
après la pression permanente du français l’oblige à
subir .. Au 11ème il frôle le naufrage presque résigné
dans les cordes, Jacquot danse
autour de lui, le domine, enchaîne et l’humilie. Parfaitement préparé, le français
est étourdissant dans les deux derniers rounds. Intraitable même
! Déchaîné, il est le premier en action et seul le
punch peut sauver Curry dans le dernier round !
Jamais aussi près de son rêve, René tourne, et
tourne encore… jusqu’au gong final !

Le jour de gloire
17 ans après son premier combat contre Monzon, Bouttier revit
par procuration cette ivresse : "Tout était là ,
dans la tête ! Je l’ai vu descendre vers le ring et je savais qu’il
allait gagner ! Il était prêt, ces choses là se lisent
dans les yeux".
René Jacquot a su saisir la chance de sa vie avec grande lucidité,
misant sur sa résistance. Il avait su se préparer mentalement
à battre un adversaire meilleur boxeur mais qui avait tout gagné
et n’était plus dans la peau d’un boxeur capable de puiser dans
ses réserves.
Au verdict des trois juges unanimes en sa faveur, Jacquot s’écroule
sur le ring les mains sur le visage. Ivre de bonheur, le petit artisan
de la boxe est devenu star en une soirée. Son jour de gloire est
enfin arrivé. Depuis Juillet 1959, la France attendait le successeur
d'Alphonse Halimi. La fin d’une malédiction de 29 ans, 7
mois et 3 jours durant lesquels 29 malheureux compatriotes avaient consécutivement
échoué aux portes du titre mondial.
La plus grande surprise de l’année de la boxe, selon The
Ring magazine. Même si du temps d’Halimi, la boxe ne
comptait uniquement 8 champions et que 30 ans plus tard, elle en dénombrait
prés de 50, René Jacquot réalise un merveilleux exploit
devant un vrai champion. Au lendemain, Arum qui compris la porté
historique de l’événement affirmera même : "pour la
boxe de votre pays, Jacquot est aussi important que Cerdan".

Amer lendemain
Ce combat sonnera le glas de la brillante carrière de Don Curry
qui connaîtra ensuite deux sévères désillusions
face à Nunn en poids moyens et face à la nouvelle star des
super-welters : Terry Norris.
Pour Jacquot également, sa première défense cinq
mois plus tard à Mirapolis, sera le pire des cauchemars qu’un boxeur
puisse connaître. Après seulement quelques secondes, Jacquot
esquivera un coup large délivré par John Mugabi mais emporté
par son élan et le revêtement humide, il tombera sur
sa propre cheville en porte à faux.

René perdra donc son titre mondial sans combattre réellement,
sans prendre le moindre coup.
Toujours aussi lucide, il tiendra la limite devant Norris malgré trois voyages au tapis durant l'affrontement. Puis, avant de se retirer sans disputer le combat de trop, il échouera en Sicile pour la ceinture IBF devant le roublard Rosi aux points lors de son dernier combat : le 30 novembre 1990.
