THERE IS A 27 YEAR: MANCINI - BRAMBLE

Born March 4, 1961 at Younstown Ohio, Raymond Michael Mancini began his professional career at age 18 in the footsteps of his father, Lenny, a former lightweight in the '40s. Engaging young man, devoted body and soul by paternal love, Ray attends the halls from an early age. At the age of 15, he wears with pride in workouts, old shoes and shorts from his father.
In the late 70's, the category of light still under the spell of the great Roberto Duran has found his new boss, a deserter from the lower category, Alexis Arguello. But already, winner of his first 18 fights with 15 wins before the deadline, the Italian-American kid in May 1981 won the North American title it retains the excellent points to Jose Luis Ramirez two months later to s' open the door to the world title in October 1981.
After 14 rounds of violence in which the top of its 20 years, Ray is on a par with the star of Nicaragua, the young "Boom Boom" abdicated. His first statements in the ring: "I am disappointed not to have won the title for my father," as well as his courage move him all over America.

Tragedy in the ring
Six months after the coronation of "small", and a first defense before the deadline to Ernesto Espana (6th stop), the Mancini experience the greatest misfortune of a ring. Despite this controversy and internal injury that will keep the young champion of this incident, it continues to rise next year, pushing the output Orlando Romero and the other great warrior "huge heart", ex-champion of the feathers, Bobby Chacon.

A "no reference"
If Mancini is much attention particularly in the chronicles of sports magazines, the official challenger, a native of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands (Kitts and Nevis) is available in the old unknown to their shock. Born in Fall 1960, during Hurricane "Donna" that devastated the Caribbean and Florida, his parents called this woman's name for many years. The two boxers accept the fight with no attachment. Bramble proves as nimble and quick as Mancini midway. At the end of the 6th, the battle has still not abated. Head against head, Bramble affects more specifically ... the champion returns to his corner, his right eye closed, a bloody nose ...

In the following rounds, new challenger in the square brackets collide head-on the target. Hands up in front of his face, Bramble gene Mancini in his own register. But the champion does not break and advance always worn by the screaming hysterical fans. In turn, it affects violently and connects ...
In the last third of the fight, Bramble is now moving forward, and takes over physically. A new sanctions against the left of the fire Mancini. Never again
The two men will meet for a rematch six months later, February 16, 1985 in Reno.
Fifteen new rounds as lively and intense spend again Bramble points. Following this failure, Mancini will draw his bow at the age of 25 years.
It will attempt a comeback four years later in March 1989, Hector Camacho Sr. to dethrone his WBO light welterweight crown. Non-combat training, he will be beaten again in points and decide to hang up the gloves again.
A few months after the death of his father in April 1992, it will make a last attempt to return for his second fight in eight years. It will challenge the North American champion Greg Haugen super light. In front of 12,000 people who will support as his finest hour, it will be knocked out in the seventh on a hook right against terrible. At 31, he retired from the ring. Jeune homme attachant, dévoué corps et âme par amour paternel, Ray fréquente les salles dès son premier âge. A l'âge de 15 ans, il arbore avec fierté en séances d'entraînements, les vieilles chaussures et shorts de son géniteur.
En cette fin des années 70, la catégorie des légers encore sous le charme de l'immense Roberto Duran vient de trouver son nouveau patron, transfuge de la catégorie inférieure, Alexis Arguello. Mais déjà, vainqueur de ses 18 premiers combats dont 15 remportés avant la limite, le môme italo-américain conquiert en mai 1981 le titre nord-américain qu'il conserve aux points devant l'excellent José Luis Ramirez deux mois plus tard pour s'ouvrir la porte du titre mondial en octobre 1981.
Au terme de 14 rounds violents au cours desquels du haut de ses 20 ans, Ray fait jeu égal avec la star nicaraguayen, le jeune "Boom Boom" abdiqua. Ses premières déclarations sur le ring : "je suis déçu de ne pas avoir gagné le titre pour mon père", tout autant que son courage émeuvent toute l'Amérique.

Tous les combats de "Boom Boom" sont menés sur la même tactique : se désaxer, remiser avec de larges crochets puissants, donner du rythme, presser sans cesse en utilisant son bras avant gauche. Doté d'une extraordinaire popularité, Ray se voit offrir huit mois plus tard une nouvelle opportunité mondiale. Une chance qu'il doit à Bob Arum qui, avec 25.000 dollars, soudoya Pepe Cordero, président de la WBA…

Le 8 mai 1982 à Las Vegas, Mancini exécute dans un premier round enragé le tenant Arturo Frias. Champion à 21 ans, il rentre dans sa ville, accueilli par des milliers de fans. Si les Mancini ne sont pas le seul exemple de "lien de sang" sur le ring, leur complicité est remarquable, à un tel point, que leur histoire alimentera un scénario émouvant de film "The Heart of champion" en 1985.

Tragédie sur le ring
Six mois après le sacre du "petit", et une première défense avant la limite devant Ernesto Espana (arrêt au 6ème), les Mancini connaîtront le plus grand malheur sur un ring. Ray apprend que son adversaire coréen Duk Koo Kim, qu'il a sévèrement mis hors combat au 14ème round, décède quelques jours après leur combat. George Lundberg, rédacteur à l'association médicale américaine monta à la charge et lança une féroce campagne pour bannir cette pratique sportive. Un drame qui se renforce par le double suicide : celui de l'arbitre, Richard Green, puis de la mère du boxeur coréen, quatre mois plus tard. En conséquence, la WBC ordonnera immédiatement la réduction de la durée de leurs championnats de 15 à 12 rounds. Malgré cette polémique et la blessure interne que le jeune champion gardera de cet incident, il poursuit son ascension l'année suivante, poussant vers la sortie Orlando Romero puis l'autre immense guerrier au "cœur énorme", ex-champion des plumes, Bobby Chacon.

Un "Sans référence"
Si Mancini fait couler beaucoup d'encre notamment dans les chroniques des magasines sportifs, son challenger officiel, natif de St Croix dans les îles vierges (Kitts et Nevis) se présente en inconnu à la vieille de leur choc. Né en automne 1960 , durant l’ouragan « Donna » qui dévasta les Caraïbes et la Floride, ses parents l’appelèrent de ce prénom féminin durant de nombreuses années. Depuis ses débuts en octobre 1980, ses 20 succès pour un nul et une défaite (controversée aux points) attestent qu’il est un client sérieux même s’il ne possède pas de réelle référence. Son manager Lou Duva n'en démord pourtant pas "Livingstone va créer l'événement !"

14 rounds furieux !
Sous une clameur indescriptible, le champion en culotte noire et bandes rouges entre dans le dôme entouré de son entraîneur Murphy Griffith, de son manager Dave Wolf et de son père. Musculeux, Mancini doit surmonter un handicap de 8 cm de taille. Durant les quatre premiers rounds, le champion entre en guerre ! Un crochet gauche dans le troisième round ébranle Bramble.
Toujours aussi actif, campé au centre du ring, Ray avance sans cesse. La vitesse et la qualité de ses jabs du bras gauche et son dynamisme lui donnent l'avantage. Les deux boxeurs acceptent le combat sans aucun accrochage. Bramble se révèle aussi agile et rapide que Mancini à mi distance. A la fin du 6ème, le combat n'a toujours pas baissé d'intensité. Tête contre tête, Bramble touche plus précisément… le champion rentre dans son coin, l'œil droit fermé, le nez en sang…

Dans les rounds suivants, de nouveaux crochets droits du challenger percutent de plein fouet la cible. Les mains hautes devant son visage, Bramble gène Mancini dans son propre registre. Mais le champion ne rompt pas et avance toujours, porté par les cris hystériques de ses supporters. A son tour, il touche violemment et enchaîne...
Dans le dernier tiers du combat, c'est Bramble qui avance désormais, et prend le dessus physiquement. Un nouveau contre du gauche sanctionne la fougue de Mancini. Les deux combattants sont très proches mais Mancini, l'oeil totalement fermé, semble le plus marqué. Le challenger ne relâche pas sa pression, au 14ème round, il accélère encore et enchaîne des deux mains. Mancini, sur le reculoir, n'arrive plus à le contenir, acculé dans les cordes, Ray est saoulé de coups et, sagement, l'arbitre, Meddy Daniels, arrête les dégâts. Incroyable surprise, Bramble, devant un public stupéfié, devient le second champion du monde originaire des Iles vierges.

Jamais plus
Les deux hommes se retrouveront pour une revanche six mois plus tard, le 16 février 1985 à Réno.
Quinze nouveaux rounds aussi animés et intenses consacreront à nouveau Bramble aux points. Suite à cet échec, Mancini tirera sa révérence à l'âge de 25 ans.
Il tentera un come-back, quatre ans plus tard en mars 1989, pour détrôner Hector Camacho Sr de sa couronne WBO des super légers. Sans combat de préparation, il sera battu une nouvelle fois aux points et décidera de raccrocher à nouveau les gants.
Quelques mois après le décès de son père, en avril 1992, il fera une dernière tentative de retour, pour son deuxième combat en huit ans. Il défiera le champion nord américain des super légers Greg Haugen. Devant 12.000 personnes qui le supporteront comme à ses plus belles heures, il sera mis KO au 7ème sur un terrible crochet droit en contre. A 31 ans, il se retirera définitivement des rings. Reconverti en acteur, Mancini reste unique dans le cœur du public américain.
Le "journeyman" Bramble conservera cette ceinture une seule fois avant de la perdre par KO au second round devant le frappeur portoricain Edwin Rosario, le 29 juin 1986. Après ces deux victoires sur le plus populaire des boxeurs américains du début des années 80, il retrouvera son rang "ordinaire" et ne connaîtra jamais plus aucune heure de gloire.
