Rocky Marciano
(1924-1969)

Retired undefeated after 49 fights (43 wins before the deadline!), Rocco Marchegianno whose real name has left its mark on the heavyweight class in the 50's. His determination, his chin of steel and "Suzy Q" allowed him to defeat all his brilliant challengers.
Rocco Francis Marchegianno was born on 1 September 1924 in a modest neighborhood of Brockton, a suburb of Boston (Massachusetts). He spends his tender years in football and especially baseball, despite the noble art basics instilled by his father Perrino, a Neapolitan who had left his country at the age of 15.
It was not until 1944, in the uniform of GI's when he discovered his punch in a pub in Swansea (Wales), it displays all of a sudden a giant aggressive.

Discharged without a viable situation, he married Barbara who encouraged him to quit his job as a laborer for a pro career, after delivering twelve amateur fights (eight wins, four losses).
Powerful but clumsy

The young Italian-American is marked by the famous organizer Al Weil, who says to Charley Goldman. Instead of correcting its weaknesses (imbalances and lack of boxing from a distance), it perfects to be offset to fill the gap size and scope.
Two years later, despite his monotone style, Rocco remains undefeated. In 20 fights, he has made only 70 rounds and hears the sound of a gong final for the first time in October 1949.

The secret? A chin of steel, an outstanding health after a rare surrender for a drive and determination to fight that grows to compare to the great Jack Dempsey. The Madison Square Garden capsizes under the spell of this "bulldozer obstinate" behavior marked by kindness and simplicity far from the strings: terrifying when it causes a concussion Carmine Vingo, but endearing as it passes sleepless nights at the bedside this opponent, the Rockefeller Hospital, to watch all developments favorable to health.

His rise to the challenge wins he dreads: facing Joe Louis, the idol of her childhood and the incomparable champion from September 1935 to June 1948, back on the magic square for lack of money.
The correction that the young wolf inflicts in the shadow of myth, in October 1951 opened the doors of the title even though Rocky has apologized in tears in the dressing room of the fallen champion. This
victory leaves a bitter taste that will keep all his life. On September 2, 1952, grounded in the second round and dominated technically by Jersey Joe Walcott, he won the world title in the 13th round of a right against staggering. "Suzy Q", the name he had given his right fist in reference to the atomic bomb dropped on Japan, had yet to make his own! Archie Moore later said about his lethal weapon, "his right as fast as a bullet comes baseball."

After beating Walcott in the hand, then LaStarza, only one challenger stands before him. This is Ezzard Charles, the former world champion, chasing "his" crown sold three years ago.
During the first fight in June 1954, the blows of Charles cut into the arches of the champion. But the challenger bows to points on a unanimous but close decision (8 rounds to 6 rounds against a zero). The other hand, three months later, still running in favor of Marciano and "Susy Q" that sends Charles to the mat in the eighth recovery. After two more successful defense the following year, on Don Cockell and Archie Moore, the announcement of the withdrawal of Rocky was received with astonishment. Some rumors about her severe headaches and problems of vertebrae are contradicted by his motivation: "My way of beating me forced me to train more than any other boxer. The ascetic life far from home I was leading in the camps had become too hard for my wife, my daughter and my mother whom I had promised to quit boxing when I have enough money. "

Marciano remains the only heavyweight champion in history to have retired undefeated (49 fights, 49 wins including 43 before the limit!)
Treasurer of the bonanza of four million won in the ring, its lucidity and its sad recollection of having given to his idol the "fight too", he will always turn down offers to confront his successors Floyd Patterson and Sonny Liston.
Unfortunately, he does not enjoy his ease for long. On August 31, 1969, a few hours of his 46th birthday, Rocky killed in plane crash near Iowa. He will never know the result of "computer fight" that opposed to Muhammad Ali (his 50th victory by knockout in the 13th round).

Despite its morphology (his short arms and legs too muscular) and his style often described, wrongly, as frustrating, Marciano will remain forever in the pantheon of legends. Its pugnacity, its exceptional chin and power have made it one of the greatest hitters in history, who delivered an average of five rounds per fight. Joe Louis himself, illustrated his prestige: "This is not about my career that must be such, but on that of Rocky Marciano."

Post Re: Rocky Marciano (1924-1969)
