Sanchez - Gomez
WBC championship feathers
On August 21, 1981, the ring of the famous Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the American promoter Don King has one of the most exciting duels of small categories.
The undefeated Puerto Rican puncher Wilfredo Gomez, king of the super-bantamweight weight for three and a half years, the challenge WBC titleholder feathers, the wonderful Mexican Salvador Sanchez. This shock spicy, titled "The Battle of the small giants" has kept all its promises.
Don King has never been so exuberant during a press conference this August 20, 1981 in the lounge at Caesars Palace. Laughter, roars of joy and an avalanche of superlatives: the great Don! The American developer realized a dream: to oppose, without the need for alliance with Lou Duva or Bob Arum, two idols of the rings. "Gomez and Sanchez are two champions at the top of their game. Their opposition has a shock in style between a puncher and a terrible artist rings. No fighting has so passionate Latin America. " Thousands of fans of the two men are present, many without a ticket, only to support them.

The enthusiasm for this appointment goes beyond the imaginable. For one simple reason: the winner will seal the award to the Mexican-Puerto Rican historical rivalry for the hegemony of small categories.
Nor the quiet of Salvador Sanchez (22), nor the excitement of the clan opponent can moderate the eccentric manager. But for once the promotional discourse does not seem excessive. Sitting at his side, Wilfredo Gomez (24 years), Puerto Rican wild, sweaty insurance. Unbeaten as a pro, amateur world champion in 1974 in Cuba is a phenomenon. Champion WBC super-bantamweight at age 21, he chained thirteen defenses by knockout victories between May 1977 and December 1980! This record turns it into a national hero. The eloquence of his record (32 victories ... all by knockout) scary. "I go up to the feathers to continue my series. I will crush Sanchez. It will KO tomorrow night! "However, the Mexican people will not believe that his" pet peeve "reissue a thirteenth humiliation (Gomez has already beaten by Mexican 12 KO). Charged with the mandate of "national vengeance," Salvador Sanchez, focused and determined response to the prediction of his rival: "I am in perfect condition. Gomez is a great fighter, but tomorrow he will understand what boxing. "

As Gomez, Sanchez was crowned at the age of 21. In one year, the young Mexican connects five defenses against the best in its class. But the old of the biggest appointments of his career, doubts remain. His mastery of movement, feints and cons is certain, but she could thwart the
machine to the Puerto Rican punching power superhuman?

The two men are appearing in a typical South American hysteria. The tension is breathtaking. The public no longer holds, "Mexico, Mexico!" Screaming compatriots Sanchez. Undoubtedly, it won the first game. His people said this.
Early interactions, Gomez appropriates the center of the ring. After only forty seconds, Sanchez stuck in a corner and starts the war! A hard-right challenger button, the crowd roared. The exchange intensifies violent again. But suddenly, in a flash, one against the right followed by a left hook jaw Gomez collide. Drug clarity, these two shots project the king of KO on the bottom! Piqued at his own game, Sanchez comes to warn him. Shaken, the Puerto Rican does not believe his eyes. Since taking the title of super-bantamweight, he had never relived this bitter experience. As the referee has 8, the crowd screams Mexican joy. And Sanchez continues without rushing, it avoids the risk and affects its prey leaking. On the back foot, Gomez failed to stem the flood of accurate shots. The bell saved the worst-puncher.

Sanchez continued his recital. Deserving, Gomez continues to dry. It does, however, only solutions. The key is its ability to express its power in close combat. For remote, adapter and the virtuosity of Sanchez dominated the discussions. Swollen cheeks and eyes half closed, Gomez is still undergoing the acceleration of the champion at the end of the fifth. The Mexican matador goads the bull dance. He dodges and plants his banderillas. Gomez does not disarm and strengthens its hunting. The danger still lurks. "What a fight!" Raves Sugar Ray Leonard at the microphone.
In the eighth round, the intensity of trade becomes even more poignant. Sanchez suddenly emerges from an angle. A devastating right hand hurts the face of Gomez. The thrust is perfect. Disarticulated, it capsized on the strings. Sanchez double his left, three additional shots. Gomez is knee KO!
Carried in triumph, Salvador Sanchez, elected by The Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year 1981 (with Sugar Ray Leonard) has struck down the "Portorican Killer."

Post Re: Sanchez - Gomez WBC championship feathers
Sanchez - Gomez
