Seul problème mais de taille, il n’a pas l’âge minimum requis (17 ans) pour disputer les sélections américaines. Peu importe, il ment sur son état civil pour pouvoir concourir et ne s’incline qu’en demi-finales de ces trials alors qu’il n’a que 16 ans.
Ce n’est que partie remise et quatre ans plus tard, le monde entend parler du jeune homme lors des JO de Montréal. Dans le village olympique, il se murmure qu’un jeune noir américain a un talent fou. Leonard est si fort, si rapide, avec un sens du déplacement et une gestuelle rarement vue qu’il domine outrageusement ses onze premiers rivaux, ne perdant aucun round lors de ces matchs. Le premier vrai test de sa carrière a lieu en 1978 contre un dur bad boy, un certain… Floyd Mayweather. Le père de Floyd, né un an et demi plus tôt, aussi doit capituler, arrêté par l’arbitre dans la 10e et dernière reprise. Pour son 25e combat en 1979, Leonard défie un autre phénomène en la personne du Portoricain Wilfredo Benitez, invaincu en 37 combats et tenant du titre WBC des welters. Alors qu’il est saoulé de coups et sans réaction, Carlos Padilla met fin à son calvaire au 15e et dernier round. Sugar décroche son premier titre mondial.
A peine le temps de réussir un des plus beaux KO de l’histoire aux dépens de l’Anglais Green que se profile déjà l’ombre du très dur Roberto Duran.

Pendant ce temps-là, un homme fait aussi parler de lui du coté de Detroit. Le terrible «Hit Man» Thomas Hearns, champion WBA des welters et vainqueur de trente de ses trente-deux combats par KO. Les deux hommes s’invectivent par presse interposée et le duel devient inévitable. Ce
sera le premier «combat du siècle» chez les welters. A Las Vegas, l’affrontement est acharné et apparaît longtemps indécis tant aucun des deux hommes ne veut céder devant l’autre, jusqu’à ce fatidique 14e round où le puncheur de Detroit encaisse une terrible série qui le met KO. Malheureusement, ce duel a laissé des traces et après une exécution en règle du quelconque Finch, le verdict tombe: Leonard souffre d’un décollement de la rétine ! C’est la consternation dans le monde pugilistique, il doit abandonner la boxe en pleine gloire, à seulement 26 ans.
Pendant deux ans, Ray s’occupe de sa femme Juanita qu’il a connue très jeune. Mais le démon de la boxe est toujours présent et il décide de remonter sur un ring face au dénommé Kevin Howard. Leonard est mécontent de sa performance car malgré une victoire au 9e round rien n’a fonctionné comme il l’avait espéré et il déclare à l’assistance médusée qu’il n’a plus la flamme et que jamais il ne redeviendra. Sa retraite définitive !
Toute l’attention des fans du monde entier est désormais concentrée sur une terreur venue de Brockton qui s’est proclamé «Marvelous». Marvin Hagler règne sans partage sur les poids moyens.

L’affrontement sera programmé le 6 avril 1987 au Caeasar’s Palace de Las Vegas. Leonard a 31 ans et n’a plus boxé depuis près de cinq ans, hormis l’intermède Howard, et il s’attaque au meilleur boxeur en activité. Pourtant l’impensable se produit, le virtuose a retrouvé toute sa superbe et jamais Hagler ne parvient à cadrer cette cible insaisissable. Comme à ses plus beaux jours Leonard virevolte en refusant le défi physique. Il boxe à la touche, sans aucune efficacité certes, mais suffisamment précis pour obtenir une décision en sa faveur. Un verdict controversé par Marvelous qui, s’estimant victime d’un vol, met un terme à sa carrière. Poussé par cette réussite extraordinaire, Sugar veut d’autres titres. Cela tombe bien, la WBC vient de reconnaître elle aussi la catégorie des super-moyens nouvellement crée. Qui mieux que le nouvel héros pourrait en être le premier représentant ? Le combat qui l’oppose en 1988 au Canadien Donny Lalonde, champion WBC des mi-lourds, octroiera donc deux titres dans deux catégories différentes, laissant au passage augurer de l’anarchie qui régnera plus tard au sein de ces fédérations. Les reprises passent et Leonard prend doucement la mesure de son rival. Au 9e round, le Canadien est envoyé au sol sur série ponctuée d’un crochet gauche. L’arbitre se précipite pour arrêter le combat dans les secondes qui suivent.
Leonard combat encore l’année suivante pour une revanche face à son vieux rival Hearns, obtenant un bienheureux match nul. Une belle face à Roberto Duran est aussi au programme en cette année 1989. Comme neuf ans auparavant il s’imposa, cette fois-ci largement aux points au terme d’un combat assez décevant et à sens unique.
Sugar a de nouveau l’idée de revenir deux ans plus tard. Malheureusement pour lui, c’est la fois de trop. Le jeune et talentueux Terry Norris inflige à celui qui était son idole de jeunesse une terrible correction.

Ray Leonard aura tenu tous les rôles dans la boxe au fil de sa vie: combattant, entraîneur, promoteur et manager d’une écurie, commentateur et aussi animateur d’une émission de télé réalité avec Sylvester Stallone.
