Pavlik is out with a near death staph infection, so Paul Williams has lost his dance partner for December 5th.
As a result the Joshua Clottey vs Carlos Quintana fight has been cancelled.
Now this just doesn't make any sense at all to me. Can anyone shed some light on the story?
Supposedly Paul Williams is still planning to fight on December 5th whether Pavlik is in or not. So why the heck has the Clottey/Quintana undercard been cancelled? Why would you drop a decent undercard fight? Williams isn't going to find as good an opponent to replace Kelly, so why would you kill off the fight that might actually bring in buyers?
And since you did... since both bouts are cancelled...
Why isn't Paul Williams fighting Joshua Clottey? He's already beaten Quintana and Clottey DESERVES a dang fight after HBO spat on his Mosley deal. I understand the weight disparity, but push the date out a couple weeks... then make it a jr. middleweight fight at around 154. Both guys will have around two months to readjust their weight by about 6 pounds. That should be more than easy for consumate professionals like these?
Williams is a middleweight now, but might be able to make Light middle. No way he still can get to 147! He was there but moved up when guys like Floyd wanted nothing to do with him. Plus he was just waiting for a title at 160, dropping two weight classes to fight in a nontitle match wouldn't make any sense. Unfortunitely Williams is stuck waiting for a middleweight title shot, Clottey lost his last fight and for now til he gets back on the winning track is not a big draw. Thats why Shane is fighting Berto rather than him.
Cant imagine Clottey coming to 160 to fight Williams and if Williams has done all his training to come in at 160 he isnt suddenly gonna diet to 154.
Wrong for both fighters although would be interesting at catchweight.

what has clottey done to deserve this fight other than getting jerked around by HBO?

Probably Clottey has to work hard for the welterweight limit - he was 170 coming into the ring against Corrales! There were some roumors of him fighting Martinez in 154. Maybe that 160 isn't so unreal? I still hope Williams - Dzindziruk can finally happen in this situation. Dzindziruk has skills to neutralize Williams' 100 punches per round.

To be honest only fighters at 168 and above would appear to be willing to fight Williams as they feel they would have a chance of beating him. As he has trained to fight at middleweight then unless there is some alphabet gold involved then there would be nothing to gain so I think 'The Punisher'will fade away for the rest of the year.
