Azumah Nelson vs Chavez, Barrera, JMM & Morales
As we all know in recent years the Mexican trio of Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik Morales have dominated the lower weight classes from Super Bantamweight to Lightweight and before them the great Julio Cesar Chavez from Superfeatherweight to Junior Weleterweight.
However the last great Mexican before them would have been Salvador Sanchez who would have to admit that Nelson gave him his toughest fight when Nelson was nothing more than a raw novice.
Sanches was able to stop Azumah in the 13th round, but by the time Azumah was challenging for world honours again he was a much better fighter.
So the question I put to my fellow followers of the sweet science is how would Nelson fare against these 4 modern Mexican greats. For Chavez I would say the fight would be at 130lbs while the others at 126.
I would fancy Nelson to stop Morlaes late on as his willingness to engage in wars will make him come of second best to Nelson.
I would say the same outcome for the Barrera who battled Morlaes in their first fight; however, after that he became more scientific in his approach and would lose by close UD to Azumah.
I think JMM would cause Nelson problems with his crafty counter pucnhing and this could go either way early on. But in the later stages, Nelson punching power will be the diference and he will win a close, even split decision.
The one fight that I could not see Nelson winning is against Chavez. At 130 JCC was a machine that just broke people down and if it was over the old 15 round championship distance I would expect a similar outcome to Nelson's defeat to Sanchez.
So what are your thoughts?
