Arum: Valero to fight Prescott

Edwin Valero, THE RING's No. 3-rated lightweight, is close to completing a deal to face Breidis Prescott on July 25 in Mexico, promoter Bob Arum said.

The fight will take place in either Cancun or Toluca, which is near Mexico City, he said.

Valero (25-0, 25 knockouts) is coming off a sensational knockout of Antonio Pitalua to win the vacant WBC lightweight title on April 4 in Austin.

Prescott (21-0, 18 KOs) burst onto the international scene when he knocked out then-unbeaten Amir Khan in one round in September. On Feb. 20, the Colombian, who is THE RING's No. 8-rated lightweight, won by disqualification when Humberto Toledo bit him on the shoulder.

Valero and Prescott are a combined 46-0, with 43 knockouts.

Reminds me of the Zárate-Zamora matchup, but with the overall talent level several clicks lower.

Great fight in prospect! Remember Valero is the guy moving up, Prescott is huge by lightweght standards, bigger than Khan, and he operated at the start of his career at light-welter. I tip Valero to score an impressive, early stoppage, but I wouldn't be too shocked if Prescott springs another surprise.

Valero is bigger than Khan? I don't see that at all.

Edwin will take the slower, wide swimging Prescott out in quick fashion.

In Prescott's last fight against Humberto Toledo he didn't look very good. Appearing wide open, leaving his chin up while punching. He struggled til getting a disqualifing win(He was bit). Toledo appeared in no danger in spite having been KO'd in 4 of his 5 losses. Toledo was ko'd in the first round and once in the third in his last eight fights. So now it appears Prescott's ko over Khan was a fluke.

Never the less & sad to say he still represents Valero's toughest opponent to date. Sounds strange since Valero is a two time champion with six title bouts already. It is hard to pick against Valero here with all things considered.

I agree, this should be a great scrap for as long as it lasts. Two big punchers, we'll finally see how good Valero's chin is (especially if he continues to leave it up there in the air). I've seen Prescott rocked a few times when he fought on ESPN before the Khan fight. Still I pick Valero by KO possibly very early.
